  • In this paper, we develop the noninformative priors for stress-strength reliability from the Pareto distributions. We develop the matching priors and the reference priors. It turns out that the second order matching prior does not match the alternative coverage probabilities, and is not a highest posterior density matching or a cumelative distribution function matching priors. Also we reveal that the one-at-a-time reference prior and Jeffreys' prior are the second order matching prior. We show that the proposed reference prior matches the target coverage probabilities in a frequentist sense through simulation study, and an example is given.

  • In this research, the influence of the laminate stacking sequence on thermal stress distribution in symmetric composite plates with a quasi-square cutout subjected to uniform heat flux is examined analytically using the complex variable technique. The analytical solution is obtained based on the thermo-elastic theory and the Lekhnitskii's method. Furthermore, by employing a suitable mapping function, the solution of symmetric laminates containing a circular cutout is extended to the quasi-square cutout. The effect of important parameters including the stacking sequence of laminates, the angular position, the bluntness, the aspect ratio of cutout, the flux angle and the composite material are examined on the thermal stress distribution. It is found out that the circular shape for cutout may not necessarily be the optimum geometry for all stacking sequences. The finite element analysis results are used to validate the analytical solution.

  • A functionally graded material is a nonhomogeneous material, which is composed of several different materials to maintain structural rigidity and endure high temperature loads. An analytical method is presenter to solve the unsteady heat conduction equation for nonhomogeneous materials. A one-dimensional infinite plate made of functionally graded material is considered. The approximate Green's function solution is derived and to be used to obtain the temperature distribution them the stress distributions may be obtained. The volume fraction, the porosity, the stress difference, and the stress ratio are the design parameters and are to be used to set up a systematic design procedure.

  • Reliability analysis of tripod support structure for offshore wind turbine was performed. Extreme distribution function of peak response due to wind and wave loads was estimated by applying peak over threshold(POT) method. Then, stress based limit state function was defined by using maximum stress of support structure which was obtained by multiplying beam stress and concentration factor. The reliability analysis result was compared when maximum stress was calculated from shell element. Reliability index was evaluated using first order reliability method(FORM).

  • Sometimes open holes are required for the function and the weight reduction of structure and machinery. However, the serious stress concentration occurs because of the geometric discontinuity caused by the holes and cutting section. In this study, it is attempted to obtain the stress concentration coefficients of the inner surface of the hole boundary by changing the position and the shape of holes on the homogeneous isotropic plate. And the effects on the plate are investigated. The results show that the stress level becomes low and the distribution area widens the position of stress concentration changes as the ratio a/b increases and change to a circle. And as the ratio a/l decreases, the stress concentration reduces. As the plate with three holes. the stress $\sigma$$\_$x/ and $\tau$$\_$xy/ of hole 1,3 becomes high, especially $\sigma$$\_$x/ dominant and high.

  • Hydraulic uplift which is caused by the action of pore water pressure can be occurred in clay underlain by granular soil during conducting narrow excavation. Estimation of hydraulic uplift is done by considering soil beam. In order to execute more precise estimation of hydraulic uplift, determination of stress distribution in soil beam is necessary. This study presents stress distribution and displacement distribution in the soil beam based on the theory of elasticity. Stress distribution developed in the soil beam by self weight was derived using stress function depicted by $5^{th}$ order of polynomial and it was seen that vertical stresses along the depth of the soil beam show parabolic distribution and those directions be downward. Regarding soil beam which has the weight of $16kN/m^3, thickness and depth are 1m respectively, maximum vertical stress was about 1.7kPa. Stress distribution by the aciton of pore water pressure was derived via superposition of the stresses corresponding to the self weight and it can be seen that vertical compressive stresses act along the depth of the soil beam when the magnitude of pore water pressure equal to 5 times of the self weight is considered. Equations for prediction of the displacements in the soil beam are also presented.

  • Fatigue tests have been carried out to measure the degradation of the residual strength and the fatigue life in carbon/epoxy (0/45/90/-45)$_{2s}$ composite materials. Theoretical predictions of residual strength and fatigue life were compared with experimental results. Distribution characteristics were studied using the probability of failure based on the cumulative distribution function and median rand. The static ultimate strength of carbon/epoxy composites used herein is observed to be relatively higher than that of existing similar composites ; while fatigue life is shorter due to the brittleness of matrix. The fatigue life obtained in these experiments is shorter than that estimated by residual strength degradation model when the stress level above 0.6 For the stress level of 0.6, the experimental value was abruptly increased. The cumulative distribution function for the static ultimate strength is well correlated to that for the strength converted from the measured fatigue life. Also, the predicted distribution of residual strength shows good agreement with the experimental results. Therefore, it is proven that the residual strength degradation model is reasonable.e.

  • Even though many modular converters have several internal protection circuit blocks for various abnormal operation conditions, there are many failure cases on modular converters at real applications. In this paper, the control strategy for failure protection of converters with internal 'In-Hibit' function is investigated. As an example, for the MDl modular converters the in-hibit function application is realized and the test results shows that adopting in-hibit function while converter switching reduces the voltage and current stress. And the reduction of switching stress on converter will decrease failure rate on converters.

  • This study suggests three spatial distribution functions of strength parameters, which can be adopted in the derivation of failure conditions for transversely isotropic rocks. All three proposed functions, which are the oblate spheroidal function, the exponential function, and the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor, consist of two model parameters. With assumption that the cohesion and friction angle can be described by the proposed distribution functions, the transversely isotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is formulated and used as a failure condition in the simulation of the conventional triaxial tests. The simulation results confirm that the failure criteria incorporating the proposed distribution functions could reproduce the general trend in the variations of the axial stress at failure and the directions of failure planes with varying inclination of the weankness planes and confining pressure. Among three distribution functions, the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor yields the highest axial strength, while the axial strength estimated by the oblate spheroidal distribution function is the lowest.
