The paper presents shear lag parameters for beam-to-column connections in steel box piers. Previous researches have analyzed beam-to-column connections in steel piers using a shear lag parameter ${\eta}_o$ obtained from a simple beam model, which is not based on a reasonable design assumption. Instead, the current paper proposes a cantilever beam model and has proved the effectiveness through theoretical and experimental studies. The paper examines the inaccuracy of the previous researches by estimating the effective width, the width-span length ratio L/b, and the sectional area ratio S of a cantilever beam. Two different shear lag parameters are defined using the cantilever model and the results are compared each other. The first type of shear lag parameter ${\eta}_c$ of a cantilever beam is derived using additional moments from various stress distribution functions while the other shear lag parameter ${\eta}_{eff}$ of a cantilever beam is defined based on the concept of the effective width. An evaluation method for shear lag stresses has been investigated by comparing analytical stresses with test results. Through the study, it could be observed that the shear lag parameter ${\eta}_{eff}$ agrees with ${\eta}_c$ obtained from the $2^{nd}$ order stress distribution function. Also, it could be observed that the shear lag parameter ${\eta}_c$ using the $4^{th}$ order stress distribution function almost converges to the upper bound of test results.

The estimation of fatigue life at the design stage is very important in order to arrive at feasible and cost effective solutions considering the total lifetime of the structure and machinery compo-nents. In this study the practical procedure of prediction of fatigue life by use of cumulative damage factors based on Miner-Palmgren hypothesis and probability density function is shown with a $135,000m^3$ LNG tank being used as an example. In particular the parameters of Weibull distribution taht determine the stress spectrum are dis-cussed. At the end some of uncertainties associated with fatigue life prediction are discussed. The main results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. The practical procedure of prediction of fatigue life by use of cumulative damage factors expressed in combination of probability density function and S-N data is proposed. 2. The calculated fatigue life is influenced by the shape parameter and stress block. The conser-vative fatigue design can be achieved when using higher value of shape parameter and the stress blocks divded into more stress blocks.

For the frequency-domain spectral fatigue analysis, the probability density function of stress range needs to be estimated based on the stress spectrum only, which is a frequency domain representation of the response. The probability distribution of the stress range of the narrow-band spectrum is known to follow the Rayleigh distribution, however the PDF of wide-band spectrum is difficult to define with clarity due to the complicated fluctuation pattern of spectrum. In this paper, efforts have been made to figure out the links between the probability density function of stress range to the structural response of wide-band Gaussian random process. An artificial neural network scheme, known as one of the most powerful system identification methods, was used to identify the multivariate functional relationship between the idealized wide-band spectrums and resulting probability density functions. To achieve this, the spectrums were idealized as a superposition of two triangles with arbitrary location, height and width, targeting to comprise wide-band spectrum, and the probability density functions were represented by the linear combination of equally spaced Gaussian basis functions. To train the network under supervision, varieties of different wide-band spectrums were assumed and the converged probability density function of the stress range was derived using the rainflow counting method and all these data sets were fed into the three layer perceptron model. This nonlinear least square problem was solved using Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with regularization term included. It was proven that the network trained using the given data set could reproduce the probability density function of arbitrary wide-band spectrum of two triangles with great success.

Cord-rubber composites widely used in tires show very complicated mechanical behavior such as nonlinearity and large deformation. Three-phase(cord, rubber and the interface) modeling has been used to analyze the stress distribution in the cord-rubber composites more accurately. In this study, finite element methods were performed using two-dimensional generalized plane strain element and plane strain element to investigate the stress distribution and effective modulus of cord-rubber composites. Neo Hookean model was used for rubber property and several interface properties were assumed for various loading directions. It was found that the interface properties affect the effective modulus and the distributions of shear stress.

The reliability of multilayer ceramic capacitor with active thin dielectric layer was investigated by highly accelerated life test at various stress condition. The distribution of multilayer ceramic capacitor failure times is plotted as a function of time from Weibull distribution function. According to the test result, voltage acceleration factor is obtained from 2.24 to 2.96. The acceleration by temperature is much higher than other values of active thick dielectric layer. It is clear that median time to failure is affected by the stress voltage for high volumetric efficiency ceramic capacitors with active thin dielectric layer. The degradation under stress of voltage involves electromigration and accumulation of oxygen vacancy at Ni electrode interface of cathode.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the ductile cracked structures with bonded composite patch used in probabilistic elastic plastic fracture mechanics subjected to tensile load. The finite element method is used to analyze the stress intensity factors for elastic case, the effect of cracks and the thickness of the patch ($e_r$) are presented for calculating the stress intensity factors. For elastic-plastic the Monte Carlo method is used to predict the distribution function of the mechanical response. According to the obtained results, we note that the stress variations are important factors influencing on the distribution function of (J/Je).

Functionally graded materials(FGMs) are highlighted to be suitable for high temperature engineering due to their continuous distribution of material properties. In this paper, an optimal design is executed for determining the optimal material volume distribution pattern that minimizes the steady-state thermal stress of FGM heat-resisting composites. The interior penalty function method and the golden section method are employed as optimization techniques while the finite element method is used for thermal stress analysis. Through numerical simulations we suggest the volume fraction distributions that considerably improve initial thermal stress distributions.
This paper presents a prediction and simulation method of tensile stress-strain curves of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). For this purpose, the bridging stress and crack opening relations were obtained by the fiber bridging constitutive law which is quantitatively able to consider the fiber distribution characteristics. And then, a multi-linear model is employed for a simplification of the bridging stress and crack opening relation. In addition, to account the variability of material properties, randomly distributed properties drawn from a normal distribution with 95% confidence are assigned to each element which is determined on the basis of crack spacing. To consider the variation of crack spacing, randomly distributed crack spacing is drawn from the probability density function of fiber inclined angle calculated based on sectional image analysis. An equation for calculation of the crack spacing that takes into quantitative consideration the dimensions and fiber distribution was also derived. Subsequently, a series of simulations of ECC tensile stress-strain curves was performed. The simulation results exhibit obvious strain hardening behavior associated with multiple cracking, which correspond well with test results.

A solution is presented for the computation of the elastic-creep stresses in a hollow cylinder subjected to nonaxisymmetric temperature distribution. The creep problem is treated by the Maxwell creep model. Laplace transformation is used for reformation of the governing equation of elastic problem and Hooke's law in a function of .gamma. , .theta. , and creep constant. The governing equation is set up using the Airy stress function which leads to the biharmonic equation. The solution is obtained by using Fourer series method and Laplace inverse method used to obtain the stress components which include the variation of time. This solution shows excellent agreement with Lamkin's and Boley & Weiner's solution. The viscoelastic stresses are also obtained for the fuel rob tube subjecting nonaxisymmetric thermal load.
The performance loss as pressurized by inside components like GDL and bipolar plate happened when assembling the PEMFC stack with clamping force. Numerical analysis of Gasket was carried out to analyze distribution of clamping pressure about the inside components. In case of the gasket, Mooney-Rivlin model which is the Strain Energy Function was used for numerical analysis. This result made the stress distribution of bipolar plate to expect.
