The automotive industry is currently trying to develop light- weight vehicle for both improvement of fuel efficiency and reduction of environmental pollution. For the reduction of vehicle weight, the substitution of aluminum for steel has been increased. However, the change of material causes a significant problem with respect to the method of joining. In this paper, strength of several aluminum joining methods such as spot welding, metal insert gas(MIG) welding, adhesive bonding was evaluated by performing lap test.
The safety of ships is one of the most important concerns in terms of the environment and human life. A ship in bad condition is likely to be subject to accidents, such as collision and grounding. When a ship has minor collision damages in the form of circle or ellipse, its ultimate strength will be reduced. It is important to evaluate the reduction ratio of a ship's ultimate strength that results from damages. The strength reduction of a plate with a cutout in the form of hole has been treated by many researchers. A closed-form formula for the reduction of ultimate strength of a plate, considering the effect of several forms of cutout, has been suggested. However, the structure of ships is composed of plates and stiffeners so-called stiffened plates and it is likely that plates and stiffeners will be damaged together in collisions. This paper investigates the effect of minor collision damages on the ultimate strength of a stiffened plate by using numerical analysis. For this study, the deformed shape of minor collision damages on a stiffened plate was made by using a contact algorithm and was used as the initial shape for ultimate stress analysis. Then, a series of nonlinear FE analyses was conducted to investigate the reduction effects on the ultimate strength of the stiffened plate. The boundary conditions were simply supported at all boundaries, and the tripping of stiffener was neglected. The results are presented in the form of reduction ratio between the ultimate strength of an original, intact stiffened plate and that of a damaged stiffened plate.

Very big springback in advanced high strength steel(AHSS) sheets invokes undesired shape defects, which can be eliminated by the tool surface correction method or the forming process control method. Since the springback reduction by controlling the forming process is limited, in this study, the die correction method which finds die correction from the relationship between die design variable and springback is introduced to achieve springback reduction and is applied to the automotive side rail to reduce the springback of 75.8% within the assembly limit of 1 mm.
Shear keys in precast concrete segmental bridges (PCSBs) are usually match-casting which is very labour intensive. In this research, an innovative match-casting-free construction was proposed by leaving small gap between the convex and the concave castellated shear keys in the joints of PCSBs. Specimen experiment, shear strength analysis and numerical simulation were conducted, investigating the loading performance of this new type of dry joints, the gap dry joints. Compared with match-casting joint specimens, it has been found from experiment that shear capacity of gap joint specimens significantly decreased ranging from 17.75% to 42.43% due to only partially constrained and contacted in case of gap dry joints. Through numerical simulation, the effects of bottom contacting location, the heights of the gap and the shear key base were analyzed to investigate strength reduction and methods to enhance shear capacity of gap joint specimens. Numerical results proved that shear capacity of gap dry joints under full contact condition was higher than that under partial contact. In addition, left contact destroyed the integrity of shear keys, resulting in significant strength reduction. Larger shear key base remarkably increased shear capacity of the gap joint. Experimental tests indicated that AASHTO provision underestimated shear capacity of the match-casting dry joint specimens, while the numerical results for the gap dry joint showed that AASHTO provision underestimated shear capacity of full contact specimens, but overestimated that of left contact specimens.
Vehicle weight reduction is a known strategy to improve fuel efficiency and strengthen exhaust gas regulation. The use of high strength steel can satisfy safety, efficiency, emission, manufacturability, durability, and cost requirements. However, springback of high strength steel results in undesired shape defects. Springback is one of the most important issues of high strength steel for many applications in an automobile. Servo press has various capabilities to improve defects, process conditions, and productivity problems when forming a high strength steel. Especially, servo press can be set to function with variable slide motion in a single operation. In this study, the effect of servo press slide motion on 980MPa high strength steel was investigated through U-bending test.

For application of advanced high strength hot-rolled steels (i.e. DP590, DP780) to automotive lightweight chassis parts, various technologies from design to forming test, optimization of welding condition and investigation of coating properties were tried. The target part of this study was automotive rear sub frame and we could make $16.8\%$ weight reduction by reducing the material thickness and optimizing the design. In addition, the formability and weldability of the newly developed AHSS, DP780, were evaluated.

This study evaluates the strength of surface treatment parts using the hard anodizing method to the aluminum alloy brake disks. In order to achieve weight reduction of vehicles, Eco-friendly cars parts of the high-quality and competitive price is to equip. Especially while pursuing parts of weight reduction, it has to maintain the strength of the surface of the brake by nature. To enhance surface strength of aluminum alloy, we use hard anodizing technology in the surface treatment. This study is resulted of 3 times greater the hardness value of the hard anodized specimen than the aluminum alloy specimen for the lightweight parts of EV brake disk

Cross wedge rolling process is utilized to manufacture multi-stepped axis symmetrical parts. This process is generally performed under high temperature conditions in order to induce serious deformation. But cold cross wedge rolling process has been rarely studied due to the limits of deformation. Recently, the cold cross wedge rolling process has been utilized to enhance the material strength in specified parts of manufactured products. In this paper, experimental researches were carried out with various forming conditions of cold cross wedge rolling process in order to suggest the design guidance to make preform for cold cross wedge rolling. The tensile strength and the surface hardness of specified region were compared to that of initial material with the variation of the area reduction and the rotational speed of rolling die. With respect to the area reduction, the maximum tensile strength was linearly increased and the surface hardness was rapidly increased within lower percent of area reduction. The surface hardness was saturated over the rotational die speed of 0.8 RPM.
A new reduction method of residual stress in welding joint is proposed where welded metals are shaken during welding. By an experiment using a small shaker, it can be shown that tensile residual stress near the bead is significantly reduced. Since tensile residual stress on the surface degrades fatigue strength for cumulative damage, the proposed method is effective to reduction of residual stress of welded joints. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by the response analysis using one mass model with nonlinear springs.
The behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns made from high strength materials was investigated experimentally. Six high-strength concrete specimen columns (1:4 scale), which included three with high-strength transverse reinforcing bars and three with normal-strength transverse reinforcement, were tested under double curvature bending load. The effects of yielding strength and ratio of transverse reinforcement on the cracking patterns, hysteretic response, shear strength, ductility, strength reduction, energy dissipation and strain of reinforcement were studied. The test results indicated that all specimens failed in splitting failure, and specimens with high-strength transverse reinforcement exhibited better seismic performance than those with normal-strength transverse reinforcement. It also demonstrated that the strength of high-strength lateral reinforcing bars was fully utilized at the ultimate displacements. Shear strength formula of short concrete columns, which experienced a splitting failure, was proposed based on the Chinese concrete code. To enhance the applicability of the model, it was corroborated with 47 short concrete columns selected from the literature available. The results indicated that, the proposed method can give better predictions of shear strength for short columns that experienced a splitting failure than other shear strength models of ACI 318 and Chinese concrete codes.
