Compressive strength of circular concrete filled steel tubular stubs strengthened with CFRP

  • The compressive strength of circular concrete filled steel tubular (C-CFST) stubs strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is studied theoretically. According to previous experimental results, the failure process and mechanism of circular CFRP-concrete filled steel tubular (C-CFRP-CFST) stubs is analyzed, and the loading process is divided into 3 stages, i.e., elastic stage, elasto-plastic stage and failure stage. Based on continuum mechanics, the theoretical model of C-CFRP-CFST stubs under axial compression is established based on the assumptions that steel tube and concrete are both in three-dimensional stress state and CFRP is in uniaxial tensile stress state. Equations for calculating the yield strength and the ultimate strength of C-CFRP-CFST stubs are deduced. Theoretical predictions from the presented equations are compared with existing experimental results. There are a total of 49 tested specimens, including 15 ones for comparison of yield strength and 44 ones for comparison of ultimate strength. It is found that the predicted results of most specimens are within an error limit of 10%. Finally, simplified equations for calculating both yield strength and ultimate strength of C-CFRP-CFST stubs are proposed.

  • The object of the study is to discuss the effect of magic ink as a surface active substance on the mechanism of chip formation in oblique cutting. The Rehbinder effect has been known as a phenomenon that the mechanical strength reduces when the metal is coated with some surface active substances. In order to interpret these surface effects defined by Rehbinder, the influence on the shear strength of shear plane by coating surface active substances, cutting force by the depth of cut, surface roughness and hardness ratio were observed. The results are as follows: 1. By coating the magic ink on free surface of the forming chip, the effective shear angle increases, and the cuttinbg force and the deformed chip thickness decreases. 2. With the large inclination angle the effective shear angle increases, and the specific cutting force and the friction angle decrease. 3. Cutting of the coated surface improves the surface roughness and the hardness ratio drops, which means another Rehbinder effect.

Probabilistic analysis of buckling loads of structures via extended Koiter law

  • Initial imperfections, such as initial deflection or remaining stress, cause deterioration of buckling strength of structures. The Koiter imperfection sensitivity law has been extended to describe the mechanism of reduction for structures. The extension is twofold: (1) a number of imperfections are considered, and (2) the second order (minor) imperfections are implemented, in addition to the first order (major) imperfections considered in the Koiter law. Yet, in reality, the variation of external loads is dominant over that of imperfection. In this research, probabilistic evaluation of buckling loads against external loads subjected to probabilistic variation is conducted by extending the concept of imperfection sensitivity. A truss arch subjected to dead and live loads is considered as a numerical example. The mechanism of probabilistic variation of buckling strength of this arch is described by the proposed method, and its reliability is evaluated.

  • When the RC frame structures subjected to the seismic load, brittle shear failure of vertical members induces brittle collapse of whole structures. Failure mechanism like this is not desirable. So shear strengthening method to avoid this failure mechanism is needed. Recently, strengthening method using continuous fiber sheet is studied and used widely which have high elastic and high strength characteristics. In this study, RC columns which is strengthened by carbon fiber sheet in the form of tape or whole sheet were tested under the cyclic load. The parameter of this test is the amount of strengthening. As the amount of strengthening increase, strength, ductility and energy capacity increase. The failure mode of test results are shear and bond-split failure.

  • It has been reported that the biocement obtained by mixing $CaO-SiO_2-P_2O_5$ glass powders with ammonium phosphate solution has biocompatibility as will as high strength. The hardening mechanism and hydroxyapatite forming mechanism were discussed when $53.6%CaO_1,\; 38.1%SiO_2,\; 7.7P_2O_6,\; 0.6%CaF_2$(mole %) glass powder was reacted with ammonium phosphate solution and reacted in tris-buffer solution, respectively. High strength hardened biocement was obtained for the specimen with $CaNH_4PO_4\;H_2O$ crystal when the glass powder was mixed with ammonium phosphate solution, and hydroxyapatite crystal was rapidly formed only in the sample with $CaNH_4PO_4\;H_2O$ crystal when it was reacted in tris-buffer solution.

  • Weathering is defined as a process by which surface rock, once formed in the deep ground, is broken down and altered to keep the equilibrium with the ambient environment. In this study granitic rock samples of different weathering grades were collected in the field and the microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopic observation, chemical analysis, and rock property tests were carried out. Formation of secondary minerals, especially clay minerals, by weathering was identified and the mechanism for the change of engineering properties such as rock strength degradation was analyzed.   • The internal crack propagation, the failure mode and ultimate load bearing capacity of the steel-concrete-steel composite beam under the four-point-bend loading is investigated by the numerical simulation. The results of load - displacement curve and failure mode are in good agreement with experiment. In order to study the failure mechanism, the composite beam has been modeled, which part interface interaction between steel and concrete is considered. The results indicate that there are two failure modes: (a) When the strength of the interface is lower than that of the concrete, failure happens at the interface of steel and concrete; (b) When the strength of the interface is higher than that of the concrete, the failure modes is cohesion failure, i.e., and concrete are stripped because of the shear cracks at concrete edge.

  • This paper describes a simplified method for estimation of the ultimate compressive strength of actual ship panels with initial deflection of complex shape. The proposed method consists of the elastic analysis using the large deflection theory and the rigid-plastic analysis based on the collapse mechanism which also includes the large deformation effect. In order to reduce the computing time for the elastic large deflection theory and the rigid-plastic analysis based on the collapse mechanism which also includes the large deformation effect. In order to reduce the computing time for the elastic large deflection analysis, only one term of Fourier series for the plate deflection is considered. The results of the proposed method are in good agreement with those calculated by the elasto-plastic large deflection analysis using F.E.M. and the computing time of the proposed method is extremely short compared with that of F.E.M.

  • Aluminum-zinc-magnesium alloy is a well-known alloy that is both strong and lightweight. Precipitation strengthening plays a significant role in the strength mechanism of this alloy, with nano-sized η-based precipitates being the representative precipitates. However, the growth of η precipitates can lead to a decrease in strength, necessitating research into ways to control their growth. In this study, we observed the atomic-level behavior of η2 precipitates and discovered that the precipitates grew through a combination with magnesium after a zinc segregation layer was formed around them.

Model test and numerical simulation on the bearing mechanism of tunnel-type anchorage

  • The bearing mechanism of tunnel-type anchorage (TTA) for suspension bridges is studied. Model tests are conducted using different shapes of plug bodies, which are circular column shape and circular truncated cone shape. The results show that the plug body of the latter shape possesses much larger bearing capacity, namely 4.48 times at elastic deformation stage and 4.54 times at failure stage compared to the former shape. Numerical simulation is then conducted to understand the mechanical and structural responses of plug body and surrounding rock mass. The mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock mass are firstly back-analyzed based on the monitoring data. The calculation laws of deformation and equivalent plastic strain show that the numerical simulation results are rational and provide subsequent mechanism analysis with an established basis. Afterwards, the bearing mechanism of TTA is studied. It is concluded that the plug body of circular truncated cone shape is able to take advantage of the material strength of the surrounding rock mass, which greatly enhances its bearing capacity. The ultimate bearing capacity of TTA, therefore, is concluded to be determined by the material strength of surrounding rock mass. Finally, recommendations for TTA design are proposed and discussed.
