  • Steel fiber reinforced concrete is increasingly used day by day in various structural applications. An extensive experimentation was carried out with w/cm ratio ranging from 0.25 to 0.40, and fiber content ranging from zero to1.5 percent by volume with an aspect ratio of 80 and silica fume replacement at 5%, 10% and 15%. The influence of steel fiber content in terms of fiber reinforcing index on the compressive strength of high-performance fiber reinforced concrete (HPFRC) with strength ranging from 45 85 MPa is presented. Based on the test results, equations are proposed using statistical methods to predict 28-day strength of HPFRC effecting the fiber addition in terms of fiber reinforcing index. A strength model proposed by modifying the mix design procedure, can utilize the optimum water content and efficiency factor of pozzolan. To examine the validity of the proposed strength model, the experimental results were compared with the values predicted by the model and the absolute variation obtained was within 5 percent.

  • As a demand of higher power photovoltaic modules, shingled, multi-busbar, half-cell, and bifacial techniques are developed. Multi-busbar module has advantage for large amount of light havesting. And, half-cell is high power module for reducing resistive losses and higher shade tolerance. Recently, researches on multi-busbar is focused on reliability according to adhesion and intermetallic compound between Sn-Pb solder and Ag electrode. And half-cell module is researched to comparing with full-sized cell module for structure difference. In this study, we investigated the factors affecting to efficiency and adhesion of multi-wires half-cell module according to wire thickness, solder thickness, and flux. The results of solar simulator and peel test was that peel strength and efficiency of soldered cell is not related. But samples with flux including high solid material showed high efficiency. The results of FE-SEM and EDX line scan on cross-section between wire and Ag electrode for different flux showed thickness of solder joint between wire and Ag electrode is increasing through solid material increasing. Flux including high solid material would affect to solder behavior on Ag electrode. Higher solid material occurred lower growth of IMC layer because solder permeate to sider of wire ribbon than Ag electrode. And it increased fill factor for high efficiency. In soldering process, amount of solid material in flux and solder thickness are the factor related with characteristic of soldered photovoltaic cell.

  • This study investigated the open hole tensile (OHT) properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites and compared them to bolt joint tensile (BJT) properties. The net nominal modulus and strength (1376 MPa) were found to be higher than the gross nominal strength (1041 MPa), likely due to increasing hole size. The OHT and BJT specimens exhibited similar stiffness, as expected without bolt rotation causing secondary bending. OHT specimens experienced a sharp drop in stress indicating unstable crack propagation, delamination, and catastrophic failure. BJT specimens failed through shear out on the bolt side and bearing failure on the nut side, involving fiber kinking, matrix splitting, and delamination, resulting in lower strength compared to OHT specimens. The strength retention of carbon fiber/epoxy composites with open holes was 66%. Delamination initiation at the hole's edge caused a reduction in the stress concentration factor. Filling the hole with a bolt suppressed this relieving mechanism, leading to lower strength in BJT specimens compared to OHT specimens. Bolt joint efficiency was calculated as 15%. The reduction in strength in bolted joints was attributed to fiber-matrix splitting and delamination, aligning with Hart Smith's bolted joint efficiency diagram. These findings contribute to materials selection and structural reliability estimation for carbon fiber/epoxy composites. They highlight the behavior of open hole and bolt joint configurations under tensile loading, providing valuable insights for engineering applications.

  • The possibility of collision of two particles slowly settling one after another in water can be described using the collision efficiency factor in differential sedimentation (${\alpha}_{DS}$). ${\alpha}_{DS}$ was found to be a function of several parameters particle size, particle size ratio, Hamaker constant, density of liquid and particle, gravity acceleration. Previous researches were limited to the case when there is no electric repulsion assuming that the suspension is destabilized. In this paper, ${\alpha}_{DS}$ is calculated for the stabilized condition. The relative trajectory of two particles are calculated including hydrodynamics, attraction and repulsion forces. Ionic strength and surface potential significantly affect the collision possibility of two settling particles. Depending on the surface potential and ionic strength, ${\alpha}_{DS}$ value is divided into three regions; stable, unstable and transition zone. ${\alpha}_{DS}$ increases as the ionic strength increases, and as the surface charge decreases. This result can be used to model both destabilized and stabilized suspension incorporating the collision efficiency factors of the other coagulant mechanisms such as fluid shear and Browian motion.

  • The electrical characteristics and particle collection efficiency of a wide-plate spacing electrostatic precipitator are numerically investigated, and the results are compared with those obtained experimentally. The electric potential and field strength near the collection plate increase with increasing the plate spacing. The electric field strength of a discharge electrode of a twisted pin type is larger than that of a rectangular type. As the roughness factor of the discharge electrode wire becomes small, or the plate spacing becomes narrow, the corona current of the precipitator increases. The numerical results agree well with those obtained from experimental method.

  • The trend on marine diesel engine productions and refinements has led to a higher mean effective pressure and thermal efficiency. These resulted in increased maximum combustion pressure within the cylinder and vibratory torque in crankshaft. In view of this. the crankshaft should be able to withstand the dynamic stresses caused by load variations. Different factors including size, material and stress concentration factors should also be considered to ensure the reliability of the shafting system. As such, crankshaft must be designed and compacted within its fatigue strength. In this paper, the strength analysis of crankshaft Is carried out by: simplified method recommended by IACS(International Association Classification Societies) M53 and a detailed method with the crankshaft assumed as a continuous beam and bearing supported in its flexibility. The results of these two methods are then compared.

  • Light-Weight Concrete containing Expanded Poly-Styrene Beads (EPS-LWC) is an approved structural and non-structural material characterized by a considerably lower density and higher structural efficiency, compared to concrete containing ordinary aggregates. The experimental campaign carried out in this project provides new information on the mechanical properties of structural EPS-LWC, with reference to the strength and tension (by splitting and in bending), the modulus of elasticity, the stress-strain curve in unconfined compression, the absorbed energy under compression and reinforcement-concrete bond. The properties measured at seven ages since casting, from 3 days to 91 days, in order to investigate their in-time evolution. Mathematical relationships are formulated as well, between the previous properties and time, since casting. The dependence of the compressive strength on the other mechanical properties of EPS-LWC is also described through an empirical relationship, which is shown to fit satisfactorily the experimental results.

  • The shear resistance of RC beams is subject to the amount of shear-reinforcing bars ($p_w$) and yield strength ($f_{wy}$) as well as their interactive influence ($p_wf_{wy}$). Thus, it is reasonably expected that high-strength steel bars can greatly reduce the necessary amount of shear-reinforcing bars. On the other hand, although the bond strength is influenced by the amount of shear reinforcing bars, it is not affected by the yield strength. Thus, there is often an issue that bond failure occurs before shear failure depending on the arrangement of shear reinforcing bars. It is a common practice to set sub-ties for the transverse confinement of the main re-bars as a method to prevent the bond failure. However, it can also become a factor in decreased work efficiency due to the complexity of the construction. This study experimented with simultaneous use of high-strength transverse reinforcing bars ($f_{wy}=800MPa$) and U-shaped transverse reinforcing bars of regular strength ($f_{wy}=300MPa$) in an attempt to decrease the necessary quantity of shear reinforcing bars. The effect of this attempt was investigated through fundamental experimental research in terms of the improvement in shear resistance and bond strength as well as the ease of construction.
