  • As the electric vehicle market grows, there is an issue of light weight vehicles to increase battery efficiency. Therefore, it is going to replace the battery module cover that protects the battery module of electric vehicles with high strength/high heat-resistant polymer composite material which has lighter weight from existing aluminum materials. It also aims to respond to the early electric vehicle market where technology changes quickly by combining 3D printing technology that is advantageous for small production of multiple varieties without restrictions on complex shapes. Based on the composite material mechanics, the critical length of glass fibers in short glass fiber (GF)/polycarbonate (PC) composite materials manufactured through extruder was derived as 453.87 ㎛, and the side feeding method was adopted to improve the residual fiber length from 365.87 ㎛ and to increase a dispersibility. Thus, the optimal properties of tensile strength 135 MPa and Young's modulus 7.8 MPa were implemented as GF/PC composite materials containing 30 wt% of GF. In addition, the filament extrusion conditions (temperature, extrusion speed) were optimized to meet the commercial filament specification of 1.75 mm thickness and 0.05 mm standard deviation. Through manufactured filaments, 3D printing process conditions (temperature, printing speed) were optimized by multi-optimization that minimize porosity, maximize tensile strength, and printing speed to increase the productivity. Through this procedure, tensile strength and elastic modulus were improved 11%, 56% respectively. Also, by post-processing, tensile strength and Young's modulus were improved 5%, 18% respectively. Lastly, using the FEA (finite element analysis) technique, the structure of the battery module cover was optimized to meet the mechanical shock test criteria of the electric vehicle battery module cover (ISO-12405), and it is satisfied the battery cover mechanical shock test while achieving 37% lighter weight compared to aluminum battery module cover. Based on this research, it is expected that 3D printing technology of polymer composite materials can be used in various fields in the future.

  • The effects of earthquakes can be devastating especially to existing structures that are not based on earthquake resistant design. This study proposes a steel grid shear wall that can provide a sufficient lateral resistance and can be used as a seismic retrofit method. The pushover analysis was performed on RC structure with and without the proposed steel grid shear wall. Obtain the performance point that the target structure for seismic loads applied to evaluate the response and performance levels. The capacity spectrum at performance point is nearly elastic range, so satisfied the performance objectives(LS level). And response modification factor(R factor) were calculated from the pushover analysis. The R factor approach is currently implemented to reflect inelastic ductile behavior of the structures and to reduce elastic spectral demands from earthquakes to the design level. The R factor increases from 2.17 to 3.25 was higher than the design criteria. As a result, according to reinforcement by steel grid shear wall, strength, stiffness, and ductility of the low-rise RC structure has been appropriately improved.

  • Emulsified Asphalt Mixture(EAM) is more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective than typical Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) because EAM does not produce carcinogenic substances, e.g., naphtha, kerosene, during the both of manufacturing and roadway construction process. Also, it does not require heating the aggregates and asphalt binder. However, EAM has some disadvantages. Generally EAM has a less load bearing capacity and more moisture susceptibility than conventional HMA. The study evaluated a Fiber modified EAM (FEAM) to increase load bearing capacity and to decrease moisture susceptibility of EAM. Modified Marshall mix design was developed to find Optimum Emulsion Contents (OEC), Optimum Water Contents (OWC), and Optimum Fiber Contents (OFC). A series of test were performed on the fabricated specimen with OBC, OWC, and OFC. Tests include Marshall Stability, Indirect Tensile Strength, and Resilient modulus test. Comparison analyses were performed among EAM, Fiber modified EAM (FEAM), and typical HMA to verify the applicability of EAM and FEAM in the field. Test results indicated that both of EAM and FEAM have an enough capability to resist medium traffic volume based on the Marshall mix design criteria. Also the study found that fiber modification is effective to increase the load bearing capacity and moisture damage resistance of EAM.

  • Nowadays abnormal coldness happens frequently in Korea and frost heaving causes unexpected ground deformation which results in severe problems for structures such as roadway, railroad and cutoff slope. 'Frost heave' as one of the primary phenomenon is considered to be an important factor together with 'adfreeze bond-strength' and 'creep deformation' for structural design process in permafrost area. Therefore, the fundamental study for frost heave has to be preceded for design of geo-structures in cold region. While various experimental apparatuses have been developed, there still exist a certain level of limitation to evaluate the frost-heave characteristics as design parameters. There are no standard testing method and criteria for analyzing frost heaving in Korea because temperature controlled testing apparatuses including a freezing chamber are expensive. In this paper, a new standard freezing and thawing testing apparatus is introduced, which simulates various freezing and thawing conditions in a soil specimen by using a temperature controlled triaxial cell. Frost heaving tests were performed to assess the new testing apparatus and experimental procedure to evaluate frost heaving for soils is proposed.

  • Retaining walls are widely used in the construction of underground structures. This study reviews the stability of the high-strength joint buried pile method at a site in Korea. [Consider giving details of the location.] The method is assessed by considering the amount of ground settlement, as calculated by finite element analysis and measured at the site. Comparison of the measured and numerical results confirmed the method's stability and field applicability. Settlement of 13.42~13.65 mm was calculated for seven cross-sections [The Abstract should be comprehensible without reference to the main text. The labels A-A' to G-G' should not be introduced here without explanation.] using numerical analysis, and the measured settlement reached a maximum of 2.00 mm. The observed differences and variations [Please state what differed/varied.] did not exceed the design expectations in any section. Instruments installed at the back of the excavation area were used to assess the conditions. An underground gradient meter recorded a cumulative horizontal displacement of between -0.40 and 0.60 mm, and an underground water meter recorded slight displacements of between -0.21 and 0.28 m compared with the initial measurements. A surface settlement meter observed very little movement, with a maximum of -2.00 mm compared with the initial measurement, thereby confirming the establishment of a stable state within the management criteria.

  • This study is to derive from the required performances and the optimum mix proportion of the roof concrete placed in the in-ground LNG storage tank with a capacity of 200000 $m^3$, and propose the actual data for site concrete work. The concrete placing work without sliding and segregation in the fresh concrete condition is very important because the slope of domed roof is varied in the large range by its curvature. Also the control of hydration heat and the strength development at test ages are classified with massive section about 1.4 m thick and considered to the pre-stressing work and removal of air support after concrete placing work. Considering above condition, slump range is selected $100{\pm}25$ mm under the slope $20^{\circ}$ and $150{\pm}25$ mm over the slope $20^{\circ}$ s until 60 minutes of elapsed time. Also, the roof concrete is satisfied with compressive strength range including design strength at 91 days (30 MPa), pre-stressing work at 7 days (10 MPa), air support removal work at 21 days (14 MPa). Replacement ratio of limestone powder is determined by confined water ratio test and main design factors include water-cement ratio (W/C), sand-aggregate ratio and dosage of admixture. As test results, the optimum mix proportion of the roof concrete used low heat cement is as followings. 1) Replacement ratio of limestone powder 25% by confined water ratio test 2) Water-cement ratio 57.8% 3) Sand-aggregate ratio 42.0%. Also, test results for the adiabatic temperature rising test is satisfied with its criteria and shown the lower value compared to preceding storage tank (TK-13, 14). These required performances and the optimum mix proportion is to apply the actual construction work.

  • Current standard code for R.C. design consists of two conventional design parts, so called WSD and USD, which are based on ACI 318-63 and 318-71 code provisions. The safety factors of our WSD and USD design criteria which are taken primarily from ACI 318-63 code are considered to be not appropriate compared to out country's design and construction practices. Furthermore, even the ACI safety factors are not determined from probabilistic study but merely from experiences and practices. This study investigates the safety level of R.C. flexural members designed by the current WSD safety provisions based on Second Moment Reliability theory, and proposes a rational but efficient way of determining the nominal safety factors and the associated flexural allowable stresses of steel bars and concretes in order to provide a consistent level of target reliability. Cornell's Mean First-Order Second Moment Method formulae by a log normal transformation of resistance and load output variables are adopted as the reliability analysis method for this study. The compressive allowable stress formulae are derived by a unique approach in which the balanced steel ratios of the resulting design are chosen to be the corresponding under-reinforced sections designed by strength design method with an optimum reinforcing ratio. The target reliability index for the safety provisions are considered to be ${\beta}=4$ that is well suited for our level of construction and design practices. From a series of numerical applications to investigate the safety and reliability of R.C. flexural members designed by current WSD code, it has been found that the design based on WSD provision results in uneconomical design because of unusual and inconsistent reliability. A rational set of reliability based safety factors and allowable stress of steel bars and concrete for flexural members is proposed by providing the appropriate target reliability ${\beta}=4$.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation on the structural performance of precast ribbed panel specimens and bridge deck specimens fabricated from the panels. The panel specimens are developed for permanent deck forms of railway bridges (PSC girder). The decks of railway bridges have short lengths compared with highway bridges. Therefore, precast panels for railway bridges are different from those of highway bridges. The precast panels have ribs designed for crack control at the bottom of the sections. Two kinds of specimens were examined: one with 400-mm width and one with 1200-mm width. Three specimens of each type were fabricated, and a total of 12 specimens were tested. In this test, the ultimate load, strain of the reinforcement and concrete, crack width, deformation, and slip were measured. The structural performance of the specimens was assessed using the Korea railway bridge design code and Eurocode. All specimens met the current design criteria for structural strength and serviceability.

  • Ship collisions and grounding continue to occur regardless of continuous efforts to prevent such accidents. With the increasing demand for safety at sea and for protection of the environment, it is of crucial importance to be able to reduce the probability of accidents, assess their consequences and ultimately minimize or prevent potential damages to the ships and the marine environment. Numerical simulations for actual collision problem are conducted with a special attention with respect to finite element size, fracture criteria and material properties, which require a careful consideration to improve the accuracy. A parametric analysis varying colliding speed, angle, design loading condition is conducted using nonlinear finite element analysis method for 46,00 dwt Product/chemical carrier. The relationship between the absorbed energy and indentation are derived quantitatively using the insights observed from this study, and a novel design concept for assessing the anti-collision performance are proposed.

  • This study encompasses the performance of static and fatigue test for the 8 large scale test specimens to clarify the fatigue behavior of coped stringer and the effect of the repair and strengthening on the damaged stringer of the floor system in steel railway bridges. For the purpose of the research, the actual stress wave for the existing bridge was measured, the basic stress range frequency histogram was made and the equivalent stress range was calculated. Using the result from the equivalent stress range made by adjusting the stress range, the static and fatigue test was carried out by identifying the previous rehabilitation and after. As the result of the static tests, it was revealed that the level of local stress under the S1 specimen test of the real equivalent stress range was similar to tensile strength of the test material, and it was consistent with the requirement of the initiation condition of the fatigue crack. Through the various rehabilitation methods to the damaged specimens, the effects of the repair and reinforcement were analyzed. According to the results of the repair of effect, bolting the high tension bolt over the stop hole was confirmed to be more adequate method than drilling only stop hole to delay the fatigue crack growth. Futhermore, in case of the stringer subjected by bending moment, the reinforcement over the upper flange side was determined to be a useful strengthening method, and the reinforcement to the web of the stringer was not appropriate to accomodate as a adequate strengthening method. Also it was confirmed that the category of the fatigue design for the coped stringer met with the category E specified on the fatigue design criteria of the Highway Standard Specification in Korea.
