  • Heavy storms rainfall has caused many landslides and slope failures especially in the mountainous area of the world. Landslides and slope failures are common geologic hazards and posed serious threats and globally cause billions in monetary losses and thousands of casualies each year so that studies on slope stability and its failure mechanism under rainfall are being increasing attention of these days. Rainfall-induced slope failures are generally caused by the rise in ground water level, and increase in pore water pressures and seepage forces during periods of intense rainfall. The effective stress in the soil will be decreased due to the increased pore pressure, which thus reduces the soil shear strength, eventually resulting in slope failure. During the rainfall, a wetting front goes downward into the slope, resulting in a gradual increase of the water content and a decrease of the negative pore-water pressure. This negative pore-water pressure is referred to as matric suction when referenced to the pore air pressure that contributes to the stability of unsaturated soil slopes. Therefore, the importance is the study of saturated unsaturated soil behaviors in evaluation of slope stability under heavy rainfall condition. In an actual field, a series of failures may occur in a slope due to a rainfall event. So, this study attempts to develop a numerical model to investigate this failure mechanism. A two-dimensional seepage flow model coupled with a one-dimensional surface flow and erosion/deposition model is used for seepage analysis. It is necessary to identify either there is surface runoff produced or not in a soil slope during a rainfall event, while analyzing the seepage and stability of such slopes. Runoff produced by rainfall may result erosion/deposition process on the surface of the slope. The depth of runoff has vital role in the seepage process within the soil domain so that surface flow and erosion/deposition model computes the surface water head of the runoff produced by the rainfall, and erosion/deposition on the surface of the model slope. Pore water pressure and moisture content data obtained by the seepage flow model are then used to analyze the stability of the slope. Spencer method of slope stability analysis is incorporated into dynamic programming to locate the critical slip surface of a general slope.

  • Surface compaction significantly impacts runoff and soil erosion under rainfall since it leads to changes of soil physical characteristics such as increase of bulk density and shear stress, change of microporosity, and decrease of hydraulic conductivity. This study addressed surface compaction effects on runoff and soil loss from bare and disturbed soils that are commonly distributed on construction sites. Thirty-six rainfall simulations from three replicates of each involving rainfall intensities (68.5 mm/hr, 95.6 mm/hr) and plot gradients ($5^{\circ}$, $12.5^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$) were conducted to measure runoff and soil loss for two different soil surface treatments (compacted surface, non-compacted surface). Compacted surface increased significantly soil bulk density and soil strength. However, the effect of surface treatments on runoff changed with rainfall intensity and plot gradient. Rainfall intensity and plot gradient had a positive effect on mean soil loss. In addition, the effect of surface treatments on soil loss responded differently with rainfall intensity and plot gradient. Compacted surfaces increased soil loss at gentle slope ($5^{\circ}$) while they decreased soil loss at steep slope ($20^{\circ}$). These results indicate that there exists transitional slope range ($10{\sim}15^{\circ}$) between gentle and steep slope by surface compaction effects on soil loss under disturbed bare soils and simulated rainfalls.

  • Novel SILEMs were prepared by multi-stage phase separation process combined by the low temperature phase separation (LTPS) and the high temperature phase separation (HTPS) using room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) which have a high ionic conductivity. PVDF and imidazolium series ionic liquids were used as membrane material and electrolyte, respectively. To study the ion conducting properties, the SILEMs were tested using LCR meter at temperature controlled from 30 to $130^{\circ}C$. Under humid conditions, with increasing temperature from 30 to $100^{\circ}C$, the ion conductivity of the cast $Nafion^{(R)}$ membrane increased linearly, but then started to decrease after $100^{\circ}C$. However, in the case of the SILEMs, with increasing operating temperature, the ion conductivity increased. Also, the ion conductivity behaviors of the SILEMs were almost same, regardless of humidity. The ion conductivity of the SILEMs was $2.7{\times}10^{-3}S/cm$ and increased almost linearly up to $2.2{\times}10^{-2}S/cm$ with increasing temperature to $130^{\circ}C$. The effects of an inorganic filler on the physical properties of the SILEMs were studied using the $SiO_2$. The addition of $SiO_2$ could improve the mechanical strength of the SILEMs, though the ionic conductivity was decreased slightly.

  • The artificial rains having different pH and weathering simulation test were performed for Gyeongju Namsan granite and dacitic tuff to predict the role of acid rain in the deterioration of stone monuments located in Gyeongju area. The pH 4.0 rain reacted with the fresh granite showed near neutral pH at the early stage due to the hydrolysis of minerals in the rock surface. But the pH changed back to the initial pH in the later stage. On the other hand, the pH 5.6 rain showed the neutral pH for a longer time than the experiment with pH 4.0 rain, reflecting slower reaction of minerals due to the weaker acidity. When the pH 5.6 rain reacted with the weathered granite, the water showed neutral pH longer than the case of the fresh granite. The similar tendencies were observed in the experiment of dacitic tuff, except that the pH 4.0 rain reacted with dacitic tuff took a longer time to go back to the initial pH as compared with the case of granite. These results may due to the differences in mineral composition and texture of two rocks. Dacitic tuff contains more fine-grained or glassy groundmass than granite and is more reactive with weaker acid rain. It was predicted that the weight loss and strength decrease rate of dacitic tuff would be approximatetly twice relative to those of granite in the same experimental environment.

  • Recently, 3D printing technology has been applied to make a concept model and working mockup of an industrial application. On the other hand, this technology has limited applications in industrial products due to the materials and reliability of the 3D printed product. In this study, the components of a full cord switch module are proposed as a case of a 3D printed component that can be used as a substitute for a short period. These are hub-driven and lever lockup components that have the structural characteristics of breaking down frequently in the emergency operating status. To ensure the structural strength for a substitute period, research of structure optimization was performed because 3D printing technology has a limitation in the materials used. After optimizing the structure variables of the hub-driven component, reasonable results can be drawn in that the safety factors of the left and right switching mode are 1.243 (${\Delta}153.67%$) and 3.156 (${\Delta}404.96%$). The lever lockup component has a structural weak point that can break down easily on the lockup-part because of a cantilever shape and bending moment. The rib structure was applied to decrease the deflection. In addition, optimization of the structural variables was performed, showing a safety factor of 7.52(${\Delta}26%$).

  • To provide functional properties in fish paste, boiled-dried anchovy [small size (SS) and large size (LS)] powder containing high amount of calcium was added at 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10% (w/w) levels. The properties of fried fish paste were evaluated by determination of sensory properties and physicochemical characteristics such as color, texture, folding test, and calcium contents. Calcium content of the fish paste increased with increasing anchovy amount. Increasing the amount of SS and LS in fish paste tended to decrease lightness, redness in Hunter color value, while increasing yellowness. All samples with 3 mm thickness had good flexibility and did not break even after 4 times folds. The fish pastes containing 10% of anchovy showed the highest values in strength, hardness, adhesiveness. In overall acceptance of sensory evaluation, SS and LS fish paste containing 1% and 2% of anchovy powder did not show any difference in comparison with control. These results suggest that SS and LS anchovy powder can be applied to fried fish paste products to allow for high calcium contents.

  • The board using recycled wood waste chip tends to decrease in terms of physical and mechanical properties. The reasons are notably different shape of chips, components of used adhesive and impurity content, which bring the irregular quality and downgrading of board. More over, the board has higher emissivity of formaldehyde than regular board, because recycled chip contains adhesives that were used to make previous products. This low quality of products weakens the price and quality competitiveness, and it led to bringing the issue of problem in Korean board industry. For these reason, in this study, boards using byproducts of plywood were made to evaluate physical and mechanical properties according to manufacturing conditions. As a result, The board was consists of 4~16 mesh chips for core layer and veneer on both face and they were combined using EMDI, and its' bending strength was 57.7 $N/mm^2$ which is 215% higher than that of OSB (26.8 $N/mm^2$). Moreover, the emissivity of formaldehyde was 0.7 ppm, this board seems to substitute OSB for rated sheathing.

  • Based on the data of PSC information management system of MOF(Ministry of oceans and fisheries) and APCIS(Asia-Pacific Computerized Information System) of Tokyo-MOU information system, the result of the evaluation on the reality of PSC was done, and base on 2009, it showed a trend of decrease in every DFR(Deficiency Rate) and DTR(Detention Rate). But for vessels built for more than 30 years, flags of convenience vessels, RO-RO ferry and general cargo vessel, small size vessels with gross tonnage less than 1,000 ton showed a high DFR and DTR. Each harbours is classified by the total harbours' average DFR which was 82.5 % and the average DTR was 5.1 %, excluding the Jeju harbour, showing a hugh deviation for classification of each harbour. Classification of each harbour has to be inspected by PSC and it showed a great unbalance of the number of vessels for each territory for inspection. the biggest problem with our country's PSC, where it was pointed out by the PSCO was lack of workers and independent inspection by just one worker. To strength the substantiality of the inspection of our country is to have concentrated inspection on the high risk cautious vessels, forming a human network each classified by four different sectors of the area, recalculating the amount of assignment of inspection classified by each harbour and securing workforce the PSCO improvements are necessary.

  • Stainless steel was applied as bipolar plate (BP) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) due to high mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and good machinability. However, stainless steel was corroded and increased contact resistance resulting PEMFC performance decrease. Although the corrosion resistance could be improved by surface treatment such as noble metal coating, there is a disadvantage of cost increase. The stainless steel corrosion behavior and passive layer influence on PEMFC performance should be studied to improve durability and economics of metal bipolar plate. In this study, SUS316L bipolar plate of 25 cm2 active area was manufactured, and experiments were conducted for corrosion behavior at an anode and cathode. The influence of SUS316L BP corrosion on fuel cell performance was measured using the polarization curve, impedance, and contact resistance. The metal ion concentration in drained water was analyzed during fuel cell operation with SUS316L BP. It was confirmed that the corrosion occurs more severely at the anode than at the cathode for SUS316L BP. The contact resistance was increased due to the passivation of SUS316L during fuel cell operation, and metal ions continuously dissolved even after the passive layer formation.
