This paper presents an analytical study on the strength and stiffness of various types of truss structures. The applied models are triangular-like opened truss-wall triangular model (OTT), closed truss-wall triangular model (CTT), opened solid-wall triangular model (OST), and hypercube models defined as core-filled or core-spaced cube. The models are analyzed by numerical model analysis using DEFORM 2D/3D tool with AISI 304 stainless steel. Then, the ideal solutions for stiffness and strength are defined. Finally, the relative elastic modulus of the core-spaced model is obtained as 0.0009, which is correlated with the cancellous bone for the relative density range of 0.029-0.03, and the relative elastic modulus for the core-filled model is obtained as 0.0015, which is correlated with cancellous bone for the relative density range of 0.035-0.036. For the relative compressive yield strength, the OTT reasonably agrees with the cancellous bone for the relative density of 0.042 and the relative compressive strength of 0.05. The CTT and OST are in good agreement at the relative density of 0.013 and the relative compressive yield strength of 0.002. The hypercube models can be used for the cancellous bone for stiffness, and the triangular models can be used for the cancellous bone for strength. However, none of the models can be used to replace the compact bone because it requires much higher stiffness and strength. In the near future, compact bone replacement must be further studied. In addition, previously mentioned models should be developed further.
The results of a series of finite element (FE) simulations and experimental studies are used to develop strength and stiffness models that predict the failure capacity and response characteristics of unstiffened extended endplate connections with circular and rectangular bolt configurations associated with deep girders. The proposed stiffness models are composed of multi-linear springs which model the overall extended endplate/column flange system deformation and strength of key-components. Comparison of model predictions with FE and experimental results available in the literature show that the proposed models accurately predict the strength and the response of extended endplate/column system with circular and rectangular bolt configurations. The effect of the bolt configuration (circular and rectangular) on the prying phenomenon encountered in the unstiffened extended endplate/column system was investigated. Based on FE results, extended endplate with circular bolt configuration has a more ductile behavior and exhibits higher total prying forces. The proposed models can be used to design connections that cover all possible failure modes for extended endplate with circular bolt configuration. This study provides guidelines for engineers to account for the additional forces induced in the tension bolts and for the maximum rotational capacity demand in the connection which are required for seismic analysis and design.
This paper firstly developed a new type of Double Skin Composite (DSC) beams using novel enhanced C-channels (ECs). The shear behaviour of novel ECs was firstly studied through two push-out tests. Eleven full-scale DSC beams with ECs (DSCB-ECs) were tested under four-point loading to study their ultimate strength behaviours, and the studied parameters were thickness of steel faceplate, spacing of ECs, shear span, and strength of concrete core. Test results showed that all the DSCB-ECs failed in flexure-governed mode, which confirmed the effective bonding of ECs. The working mechanisms of DSCB-ECs with different parameters were reported, analysed and discussed. The load-deflection (or strain) behaviour of DSCB-ECs were also detailed reported. The effects of studied parameters on ultimate strength behaviour of DSCB-ECs have been discussed and analysed. Including the experimental studies, this paper also developed theoretical models to predict the initial stiffness, elastic stiffness, cracking, yielding, and ultimate loads of DSCB-ECs. Validations of predictions against 11 test results proved the reasonable estimations of the developed theoretical models on those stiffness and strength indexes. Finally, conclusions were given based on these tests and analysis.
Real-time monitoring of stiffness and strength in cement based system has received significant attention in past few decades owing to the development of advanced techniques. Also, use of environment friendly supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in cement, though gaining huge interest, severely affect the strength gain especially in early ages. Continuous monitoring of strength- and stiffness- gain using an efficient technique will systematically facilitate to choose the suitable time of removal of formwork for structures made with SCM incorporated concrete. This paper presents a technique for monitoring the strength and stiffness evolution in hydrating fly ash blended cement systems using electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) based technique. It is important to observe that the slower pozzolanic reactivity of fly ash blended cement systems could be effectively tracked using the evolution of equivalent local stiffness of the hydrating medium. Strength prediction models are proposed for estimating the strength and stiffness of the fly ash cement system, where curing age (in terms of hours/days) and the percentage replacement of cement by fly ash are the parameters. Evaluation of strength as obtained from EMI characteristics is validated with the results from destructive compression test and also compared with the same obtained from commonly used ultrasonic wave velocity (UPV). Statistical error indices indicate that the EMI technique is capable of predicting the strength of fly ash blended cement system more accurate than that from UPV. Further, the correlations between stiffness- and strength- gain over the time of hydration are also established. From the study, it is found that EMI based method can be effectively used for monitoring of strength gain in the fly ash incorporated cement system during hardening.
Earthquakes occur as a cluster in many regions around the world where complex fault systems exist. The repeated shaking usually induces accumulative damage to affected structures. Damage accumulation in structural systems increases their level of degradation in stiffness and also reduces their strength. Many existing analytical tools of modeling RC structures lack the salient damage features that account for stiffness and strength degradation resulting from repeated earthquake loading. Therefore, these tools are inadequate to study the response of structures in regions prone to multiple earthquakes hazard. The objective of this paper is twofold: (a) develop a tool that contains appropriate damage features for the numerical analysis of RC structures subjected to more than one earthquake; and (b) conduct a parametric study that investigates the effects of multiple earthquakes on the response of RC moment resisting frame systems. For this purpose, macroscopic constitutive models of concrete and steel materials that contain the aforementioned damage features and are capable of accurately capturing materials degrading behavior, are selected and implemented into fiber-based finite element software. Furthermore, finite element models that utilize the implemented concrete and steel stress-strain hysteresis are developed. The models are then subjected to selected sets of earthquake sequences. The results presented in this study clearly indicate that the response of degrading structural systems is appreciably influenced by strong-motion sequences in a manner that cannot be predicted from simple analysis. It also confirms that the effects of multiple earthquakes on earthquake safety can be very considerable.
The purpose of this research is to compare the stiffness increment effects with the floor plan shapes by the stiffness increment factors. For this, we generated the standard floor plans with Box and T type shapes. Then applied the stiffness increment factors -outrigger, material strength, member section- to those floor plans, and generated several alternative analysis models that make the effects of the factors to the lateral displacement exposed. Finally, we analyzed the stiffness increment effects and compared with each other by the stiffness increment factors. As a result, we found that the increment effects have not influence to floor plan shapes, and orders of stiffness increment effects are outrigger, core wall and material strength. We expect that the results of this study could be effectively utilized in the schematic structural design of tall buildings.
The elastic buckling strength of a corrugated culvert made of orthotropic material such as FRP was evaluated. The height and length of a corrugated wave and the thickness of the culvert were considered as factors affecting the buckling strength of the culvert. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting on the buckling strength of the used orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various corrugated culvert models with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength was suggested from the regression with FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a corrugated culvert has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the corrugated culverts made of orthotropic material.
The elastic budding strength of a GFRP pipe reinforced with ribs was evaluated. The height and thickness of a rib and the spacing between two adjacent ribs were considered as factors affecting tlje budding strength of the pipe. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting on the budding strength because GFRP is orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various GFRP pipe models with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength of a rib-reinforced pipe made of orthotropic material was suggested from the regression with FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a rib-reinforced pipe has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the rib-reinforced pipe.
A steel slit shear wall has vertical slits and when it is under lateral loads, the section between these slits has double-curvature deformation, and by forming a flexural plastic hinge at the end of the slit, it dissipates the energy on the structure. In this article, Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses are performed to study the effect of slit shape and edge stiffener on the behavior of steel slit shear wall. Seismic behavior of three models with different slit shapes and two models with different edge stiffener shapes are studied and compared. Hysteresis curves, energy dissipation, out of plane buckling, initial stiffness and strength are discussed and studied. The proposed slit shape reduces the initial stiffness, increases the strength and energy dissipation. Also, edge stiffener shape increases the initial stiffness significantly.
