  • As to medium data which is involved in the form of streaming for a multimedia application, it characterizes that spatial locality occurs strongly but temporal locality appears even weaker. In this paper, with regard to dynamic prefetching, we suggest a method to make the most of memory reference regularities which typically innate by nature in the multimedia data with strong spatial locality but with weak temporal locality. Especially, the suggested method has a remarkable capability such that it can reduce prefetching errors substantially compared to existing prefetching methods for an application Program which divides an way into small sub-blocks and, plus executes in the unit of sub-block. We carried out experiments to test the suggested method using various MediaBench benchmarks. From the results, we have confirmed that the occurrences of prefetching error decrease effectively than those of existing linear prefetching methods.

  • Video-on-Demand(VoD) is one of the most popular media streaming which attracted many researchers' attention. VMesh is one of the most cited works in the field of the VoD system. VMesh is proposed to solve the problem of random seeking functionality. However, a large number of the DHT(Distributed Hash Table) searches in VMesh is sill the main problem which needs to be solved. In order to reduce the number of the DHT searches, the clustered segment index(CSI) scheme is proposed. In this scheme, the video segments are divided into clusters. The segment information of the video segments, which are clustered into the same cluster, are stored in the same clustered segment index that can be searched by using the hash key. Each peer also can request the required segments by using this clustered segment index. The experiment results show that the number of the DHT searches in the proposed scheme is less than that of VMesh even in case of peers leave and join the network or peers perform the fast forward/backward operations.

  • In this paper, a novel transmission system based on ATSC-M/H is proposed that enables free broadcast content services and pay subscription based content services. The proposed system is compatible with the existing systems and it does not use complex access restriction mechanisms such as CAS. In North America, many DLNA systems use set-top boxes with DVR as a digital media server. A method to enable the provision for ATSC-M/H free and pay subscription services on DLNA systems is presented. In addition, a data service processing method in DLNA systems is also proposed.

  • The widespread use of the Internet and the maturing of digital video technology have led to an increase in various streaming media application. However, new classes of hosts such as mobile devices are gaining popularity, while the transmission became more heterogeneous. Due to the characteristics of mobile networks such as low speed, high error bit rate, etc., the applications over the wireless channel have different needs and limitations from desktop computers. An intermediary between two communicating endpoints to hide the heterogeneous network links is thought as one of the best approaches. In this paper, we adopted the concept of inter-packet gap and the sequence number between continuously received packets as the error discriminator, and designed an adaptive packet sizing mechanism to improve the network efficiency under varying channel conditions. Based on the proposed mechanism, the packetization scheme with error protection is proposed to scalable encoded video delivery. Finally, simulation results reveal that our proposed mechanism can react to the varying BER conditions with better network efficiency and gain the obvious improvement to video quality for stored MPEG-4 FGS video delivery.

  • Set-top Box (STB) has evolved from being a device just sitting on top of a TV shelf to a device providing a gateway to the Internet for a home network, receiving services from multiple content providers, and enabling and ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) for the streaming media. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), with its promise to provide a converged access network for multimedia service delivery (such as Triple play & Quadruple play services), has to guarantee QoS support. To enable QoS in IMS-based networks, we have designed a set-top box which provides feedback to the service provider to ensure end-to-end QoS. Our set-top box is designed to provide virtual platforms such that it can support multiple service providers. Each service provider is able to manage its own multimedia streams and ensures the desired network performance for each flow. The set-top box also works as a Home Gateway and provides end-to-end QoS support to the client nodes.

  • The IPTV Service provides various interactive services beyond the level of being able to substitute cable TV. The IPTV system is to be decentralized gradually in which one server conducts all tasks. Primarily, deliberation of media needs to be changed into a system in which relayer and peer from the central server is utilized. Secondarily, the way of controling IPTV network need to be decentralized. Unlike the current client-server system, P2P(Peer To Peer), the main technology of decentralized IPTV is able to provide a service by cooperation of each node. Dealing with live streaming IPTV system which is based on the P2P protocol, this paper design the pure P2P IPTV structure and does verify the performance of P2P IPTV structure by realizing real system.

  • As content serviced for IP set-top boxes is streamed over IP network, the existing hacking tools for IP network can be used to capture the streamed content. Until recently, most of the content serviced on IP set-top boxes has been MPEG-2 TS. However, this content will be gradually moved to WMV, MPEG-4 or H.264 because of the relatively low compression efficiency and overhead of the TS packet. In this paper, we propose a DRM scheme other than WMRM for streamed WMV content. Our approach is to design a DRM scheme independent to the existing WMV streaming system. We also design this scheme in order to provide the feature for controlling the DRM processing time considering device performance. We verified it through the experiment.

  • Hybrid digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) is a next-generation mobile TV system that combines broadcasting and wireless communication networks and can provide various high-quality multimedia services. However, if a system adheres to the current standard of transmitting the DMB content in the form of MPEG2-TS through wireless networks, it results in a burden on the network due to low transmission efficiency. The reasons for the low transmission efficiency are as follows. First, due to its constant bitrate characteristic, DMB MPEG2-TS includes a considerable amount of needless information, such as NULL packets and stuffing bytes. Second, due to the inflexibility of the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) standard, one cannot fully utilize the maximum transmission unit of the network when converting MPEG2-TS to RTP stream for transmission. This paper proposes a new transmission scheme that resolves these problems. Experiment results show that the proposed scheme improves data bitrate transmission efficiency by 8% to 36%, compared to the standard scheme, in the streaming of various real-DMB contents.
