  • The aim of this study was to determine the effect of milk as one of the environmental friendly materials that substitute chemical fungicides for control powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca aphanis) of strawberries $(Fragaria{\times}ananassa\;Duch.)$. 'Maehyang' and 'Akihime' varieties planted in greenhouses were evaluated for the control of powdery mildew. Applications of $5\%,\;10\%\;and\;20\%$ milk had much better effects on controlling powdery mildew. In particular, $10\%$ milk showed a higher efficacy than other concentrations applied onto strawberry in greenhouse experiments. Foliar spray application of $10\%$ milk was effective for powdery mildew, whereas drench application was not. Also, foliar spray of $10\%$ milk was able to accelerate more firmness and calcium contents of strawberry fruits than the non-treated. The $10\%$ milk applied with fertilizer salts $(Ca(H_2PO_4)_2-H_2O\;and KH_2PO_4)$ showed there was a similar efficacy to $10\%$ milk alone in greenhouse experiments. White crystals and cracks on strawberry fruits appeared by $20\%$ milk. This result indicated that $10\%$ milk was a useful substitute for fungicides to control powdery mildew of strawberry.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the effects of light intensity, temperature and seasonal trends on the photosynthesis as well as the physiological characteristics of Panax species and cultivars. Four-year-old plant of Violet-stem variant, Yellow-berry variant, Mimaki and Russian ginseng of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer and American ginseng of Panax quiquefolium L. were used for study. These Panax species and cultivars were cultivated under the straw shading. The light saturation point of leaves in Violet-stem variant, Yellow-berry variant, Mimaki and American ginseng were 15,000 lux, but that of Russian ginseng was 10,000 lux. The optimum air temperature on the phtosynthesis of Violet-stem variant, Yellow-berry variant, Mimaki and American ginseng were 20$^{\circ}C$ but that of Russian ginseng was 15$^{\circ}C$ under 15,000 lux. The photosynthetic rates were increased in order of Russian ginseng, Mimaki, Yellow-berry variant, Violet-stem variant and American ginseng. The respiration rates of ginseng leaves were increased according to the increasing of temperature, but it was not different among Panax species and cultivars. Stomata frequency of American ginseng was highest, that of Russian ginseng lowest, while the length of stomata was reverse. The total chlorophyll content of American ginseng and specific leaf weight of Mimaki were higher than other ginseng cultivars. The root weight of American ginseng was heavier than others, but that of Russian ginseng was lighter. The num ber of leaflets per plant of 2-year-old plant and the root weight of 6-year-old plant were increased in order of Russian ginseng, American ginseng, Mimaki, Yellow-berry variant and Violet-stem variant.

  • Strawberry pulp was separated into serum and insoluble pulp by centrifugation and the serum was concentrated in vacuo to five folds at 55~58$^{\circ}C$ and 30~60mmHg. Concentrated strawberry pulp was prepared by mixing of concentrated serum and insoluble pulp. To evaluate the quality changes of straw-berry pulp, color, physicochemical and sensory properties were analyzed after concentration and during 18 weeks storage at -18'2. The results obtained from the study were as follows : during 18 weeks storage at - l8$^{\circ}C$, soluble solid, browning, reducing sugar content were increased and total anthocyanin, vitamin C, apparent viscosity were decreased. The result of sensory evaluation indicated that texture of concentrated pulp was inferior to that of control but flavor, color intensity and overall acceptance were not different from each other.

  • A destructive stem rot of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa cv. Akihime) sporadically occurred in farmers' fields in Daegok-myon, Jinju city, Gyeongnam province in Korea. The infected plants showed stem and crown rot, with occasional blighting of the whole plant. White mycelia appeared on stems of infected clones and sclerotia formed on the old lesions near soil surface. The fungus formed white colony on PDA and showed maximum mycelial growth and sclerotial formation at $30^{\circ}C$. The fungus usually have many narrow hyphal strands, 2.6-10.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in width, in the aerial mycelium. Typical clamp connections were formed on the mycelium. Sclerotia were spherical and 1.0-2.4 mm in size. The fungus was repeatedly isolated from infected tissues and identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. Its patho-genicity was confirmed when inoculated onto straw-berry. This is the first report on the stem rot of strawberry caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • In Korea, rice cultivars have been changing to 'quality' rice rather than high yielding cultivars. However, more than 10% of paddy field has been changed to greenhouse in winter season for cropping of water-melon, oriental-melon, straw berry and et cetra. This experiment has been made to identify the usefulness of critical N and Si fertilization(SF) level to obtain high grain quality rice with reduced insect pest damage by N and SF combination. Before the experiment, watermelon-rice cropping system was maintained for three seasons by farmer from 1998 to 2001. The experiment of N and Si (silicate) fertilization levels was evaluated with Hwayoung-byeo (Oryza sativa L., medium-maturing variety) in 2002 and 2003 in Uiryeong, Korea. Nitrogen fertilization (NF) levels were three and five in 2002 and 2003, respectively, and three SF levels were compared for getting the valuable N/SF level in both years. TOYO-value was positively affected by Si application in N100% plot but it was negatively related with NF level. Normal grain percentage was positively related with TOYO-value and it was highest in 0N plot and Si plots in N100%. Other appearance qualities like powdered, damaged, and cracked grain, were decreased with increasing N fertilization level. SF improved appearance quality in N100% plots but no effects in other treatments. Leaf sheath related diseases were significantly decreased by SF but it was negatively related with NF. In conclusion, SF could be improve grain quality at the same yield levels of conventional fertilization and it also could be reduce the diseases damages of rice plant in all N treatments. NF treatment reduced grain quality and improved grain yield at N50% level, however NF above N50% could not get any kind of benefits. So, compared with conventional fertilizer, reduced NF level is recommended for high grain quality with reduced insect pest damage.

  • The experiments were conducted to study the distribution of wilt of strawberry caused by Fusarium in Korea, the characters of the causal fnngus and its control. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Wilt of strawberry has been found in Gimhae and Samrangjin, Gyeongnam province a few years ago. This disease has been spreading year after year, and observed on farms in most of the strawberry-growing areas in Korea. 2. The fungus was isolated frequently from the crowns and petioles of diseased straw berry plants, and the fungus belonging to Fusariun oxysporum in terms of the morphological characteristics of macroconidia, microconidia, chlamydospore and conidiophore on V-8 Agar. 3. The macroconidia formation of the fungus varied remarkably with the Isolates and kinds of medium tested. However. all isolates abundantly produced macroconidia on V-8 Agar. 4. The cross-inoculation tests with several forma specialis of F. oxysporum to cucumber, tomato, watermelon, luffa, cabbage, melon and strawberry were carried out. The isolates from strawberry viz. Kodama's F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae and S-1 of the authors were pathogenic to only strawberry. The fungus was also similar in morphology and symptoms to Kodama's and Winks' isolate of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae. Therefore, the fungus is identified as Fusarium oxysporum Schl. f. sp. fragariae Winks & Williams. 5. The most effective fungicides were Benomyl and Homai for inhibiting sporulation and mycelial growth of the fungus. 6 The cultivar Kurumae 35, Himiko, Senga gigana and Daehak I were resistant, whereas Hokowase, Instiate Z4, Juspa, Puget beauty and Marshall were susceptible to the fungus with artificial inoculation.
