Ratio and Product Type Exponential Estimators of Population Mean in Double Sampling for Stratification

  • This paper discusses the problem of estimation of finite population mean in double sampling for stratification. In fact, ratio and product type exponential estimators of population mean are proposed in double sampling for stratification. The biases and mean squared errors of proposed estimators are obtained upto the first degree of approximation. The proposed estimators have been compared with usual unbiased estimator, ratio and product estimators in double sampling for stratification. To judge the performance of the proposed estimators an empirical study has been carried out.

포트 마스킹이 엔진의 부분부하 성능에 미치는 영향: Part I - 희박연소 한계 (Effects of Port Masking on Part Load Performance: Part I - Lean Misfire Limit)

  • This paper is the first of companion papers, which investigate port-masking effects on lean misfire limit. Port-masking was applied to commercial SOHC 3-valve and DOHC 4-valve engine by inserting masking plates between manifold and port. To induce various conditions of stratification, six types of masking plates were applied. The masking plates were placed in the upstream of injector to prevent wall wetting and two ports were not separated to permit both fuel and air entering through masked port. The results were compared with those by conventional port throttling. The results show that lean misfire limit mainly depends on masking direction, that is, high lean misfire limit is achieved when the port near the spark plug is masked. The mechanism of stratification by masking is different from axial stratification by port throttling. In this case, the rich mixture entering through masked port plays a very important role in the stratification process.

Simple Compromise Strategies in Multivariate Stratification

  • Stratification (among other applications) is a popular technique used in survey practice to improve the accuracy of estimators. Its full potential benefit can be gained by the effective use of auxiliary variables in stratification related to survey variables. This paper focuses on the problem of stratum formation when multiple stratification variables are available. We first review a variance reduction strategy in the case of univariate stratification. We then discuss its use for multivariate situations in convenient and efficient ways using three methods: compromised measures of size, principal components analysis and a K-means clustering algorithm. We also consider three types of compromising factors to data when using these three methods. Finally, we compare their efficiency using data from MU281 Swedish municipality population.

Sample Size Determination Using the Stratification Algorithms with the Occurrence of Stratum Jumpers

  • In the sample survey for a highly skewed population, stratum jumpers often occur. Stratum jumpers are units having large discrepancies between a stratification variable and a study variable. We propose two models for stratum jumpers: a multiplicative model and a random replacement model. We also consider the modification of the L-H stratification algorithm such that we apply the previous models to L-H algorithm in determination of the sample sizes and the stratum boundaries. We evaluate the performances of the new stratification algorithms using real data. The result shows that L-H algorithm for the random replacement model outperforms other algorithms since the estimator has the least coefficient of variation.

On Convergence of Stratification Algorithms for Skewed Populations

  • For stratifying skewed populations, the Lavall$\acute{e}$e-Hidiroglou(LH) algorithm is often considered to have a take-all stratum with the largest units and some take-some strata with the middle-size and small units. Related to its iterative nature have been reported some numerical difficulties such as the dependency of the ultimate stratum boundaries to a choice of initial boundaries and the slow convergence to locally-optimum boundaries. The geometric stratification has been recently proposed to provide initial boundaries that can avoid such numerical difficulties in implementing the LH algorithm. Since the geometric stratification does not pursuit the optimization but the equalization of the stratum CVs, the corresponding stratum boundaries may not be (near) optimal. This paper revisits these issues concerning convergence and near-optimality of optimal stratification algorithms using artificial numerical examples. We also discuss the formation of the strata and the sample allocation under the optimization process and some aspects related to discontinuity arisen from the finiteness of both population and sample as well.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the effect on the thermal stratification under various aspect ratios in the solar storage tank using FLUENT. Numerical calculations of three designs with different aspect ratio were carried out to show the behaviour of stratification in a solar storage tank. The calculation results show that the thermal stratification of the 2.5:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank can be 6.22% higher then that of the 1.5:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank and 2.68% higher then that of the 2:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank.

  • In the nuclear power plant, emergency core coolant system(ECCS) is furnished at reactor coolant system(RCS) in order to cool down high temperature water in case of emergency. However, in this coolant system, thermal stratification phenomenon can be occurred due to coolant leaking in the check valve. The thermal stratification produces excessive thermal stresses at the pipe wall so as to yield thermal fatigue crack(TFC) accident.   • Evaluation of turbulence models is performed for a better prediction of thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor by applying them to the experiment conducted at JNC. The turbulence models tested in the present study are the two-layer model, the $\kappa-\omega$ model, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model. When the algebraic flux model or differential flux model are used for treating the turbulent heat flux, there exist little differences between turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. However, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model better predict the steep gradient o( temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and only the v2-f model predicts properly the oscillation of temperature. The LES Is needed for a better prediction of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature fluctuation.

  • Stratified flow past a three-dimensional obstacle such as a sphere has been a long-lasting subject of geophysical, environmental and engineering fluid dynamics. In order to investigate the effect of the stratification on the near wake, in particular, the unsteady vortex formation behind a sphere, numerical simulations of stratified flows past a sphere are conducted. The time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a three-dimensional finite element method and a modified explicit time integration scheme. Laminar flow regime is considered, and linear stratification of density is assumed under Bossiness approximation. The computed results include the characteristics of the near wake and the unsteady vortex shedding. With a strong stratification, the separation on the sphere is suppressed and the wake structure behind the sphere becomes planar, resembling that behind a vertical cylinder.

  • A thermal stratification may occur in the horizontal parts of the surge line during operating transients of the pressurizer, which produces relatively high fatigue usage factor. Heat-up transient is the most severe case among the transient conditions. In this study, to study the relationship between the magnitude of thermal stratification and the length of vertical part of the surge line, some parametric fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analyses with different length variables of the vertical part of the surge line were performed for plant heat-up transient condition by using 3-dimensional numerical analysis. The conservativeness of the traditional finite element model for thermal stratification analysis based on the conservative assumption in the surge line was also discussed by comparison of the results of 3-dimensional transient FSI analysis of this study. Stresses calculated with 3-dimensional transient model were considerably reduced comparing with the traditional analysis.
