  • DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) is the relative efficiency measure among homogeneous DMU(Decision- Making Units) which can be used to useful tool to improve performance through efficiency evaluation and benchmarking. However, the general case of DEA was considered as unrealistic since it consists a benchmarking regardless of DMU characteristic by input and output elements and the high efficiency gap in benchmarking for inefficient DMU. To solve this problem, stratification method for benchmarking was suggested, but simply presented benchmarking path in repeatedly applying level. In this paper, we suggest a new method that inefficient DMU can choice the optimal path to benchmark the most efficient DMU base on the similarity among the input elements. For this, we propose a route choice method that combined a stratification benchmarking algorithm and SOM (Self-Organizing Map). An implementation on real environment is also presented.

  • Combustion and fuel distribution characteristics of heavy duty engine with the liquid phase LPG injection(LPLI) were studied in a single cylinder engine, Swirl ratio were varied between 1.2, 2.3, and 3.4 following Ricardo swirl number(Rs) definition, Rs=2.3 showed the best results with lower cycle-by-cycle variation and shorter burning duration in the lean region while strong swirl(Rs=3.4) made these worse for combustion enhancement. Excessive swirl resulted in reverse effects due to high heat transfer and initial flame kernel quenching. Fuel injection timings were categorized with open valve injection(OVI) and closed valve injection(CVI). Open valve injection showed shorter combustion duration and extended lean limit. The formation of rich mixture in the spark plug vicinity was achieved by open valve injection. With higher swirl strength(Rs=3.4) and open valve injection, the cloud of fuel followed the flow direction and the radial air/fuel mixing was limited by strong swirl flow. It was expected that axial stratification was maintained with open-valve injection if the radial component of the swirling motion was stronger than the axial components. The axial fuel stratification and concentration were sensitive to fuel injection timing in case of Rs=3.4 while those were relatively independent of the injection timing in case of Rs=2.3.

  • The objective of this study is to analyse the spray characteristics according to the injection duration under the ambient pressure condition, and the injection timing in the visualization engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior, we obtained the spray velocity using the PIV method that has been an useful optical diagnostics technology, and calculated the vorticity from spray velocity component. These results elucidated the relationship between vorticity and entropy which play an important role in the diffusion process for the early injection case and the stratification process for the late injection case. In addition, we quantified the homogeneous diffusion rate of spray using the entropy analysis based on the Boltzmann's statistical thermodynamics. Using these method, it was found that the concentration of spray droplets caused by the increase of injection duration is more effective than the increase of momentum dissipation. We also found that the homogeneous diffusion rate increased as the injection timing moved to the early intake stroke process and BTDC $50^{\circ}$ was the most efficient injection timing for the stratified mixture formation during the compression stroke.

  • In order to investigate the changes in sea water characteristics and stratification due to operation of Shihwa tidal power plant, three dimensional numerical model is used. In summer, the density of inner part of Shihwa Lake is more affected by salinity than water temperature due to fresh water discharge. Before tidal power plant operation, the sea water characteristics in Shihwa Lake shows relatively high temperature and low salinity. After tidal power plant operation, water temperature decreases slightly and salinity tends to increase in Shihwa Lake. Also, density increases and stratification tends to weaken by mixing with sea water.

  • Germination of Hemerocallis seeds as influenced by cold stratification at $5^{\circ}C$ (CS) and maturity of seeds evaluated using X-ray imaging has not been well investigated. Seeds of H. lilioasphodelus, H. citrina, H. citrina 'April Flower', and H. minor collected from China and H. thunbergii collected from Korea were germinated at $20^{\circ}C$ without pre-temperature treatment, while H. hongdoensis, H. dumortieri, H. minor, and H. vespertina seeds were treated with CS. Harvesting 'Stella de Oro' capsules at 35-40 days after anthesis yielded mature seeds with well-developed embryo and cotyledons analyzed by X-ray images with a 92% germination in 17 days after sowing. Seeds of H. thunbergii and H. citrina germinated in less than 13 days without CS; two weeks of CS did not accelerate seed germination. Seeds of H. hongdoensis germinated in 24 days when seeds were stored at $25^{\circ}C$ without CS and in less than 27 days when cold stratified. Therefore, 'Stella de Oro' capsules should be harvested at 35-40 days after anthesis to harvest mature seeds. Cold stratification is not required to accelerate seed germination in the Hemerocallis taxa evaluated in this study.

  • This investigation concerns thermal stratification of the water due to the temperature difference (${\Delta}T=T_{\infty}-T_i$) between the mean temperature of the water in the test tank (1m wide, 1m high, 2.1m long) and the temperature of the inflow water into the tank; flow rate of circulating water and height of the sink diffuser in the test tank. The additional objectives was to observe a stratification phenomena near an interface by measuring the velosities and the temperature difference and investigate an availabilities of the better effective hot water through establishing thermocline near an interface around the bottom of the tank. Following results were obtained through the experiments. 1. When the flow rate was constant and the temperature difference (${\Delta}T=T_{\infty}-T_i$) between the mean temperature of the flow in the test tank and the temperature of the inflow water increased by 5.6, 9.5, 13.5($^{\circ}C$), obtained the better effective advantage of hot water and the stress near an interface increased gradually. 2. When the ${\Delta}T=T_{\infty}-T_i$ was constant and flow rate increased by 4.0, 4.8, 6.4, 8.0 (LPM), obtained the better effective advent age of hot water and the mean stress near an interface increased gradually. 3. When the height of the sink diffuser was 25cm from tank bottom in comparison with 50cm, obtained the better effective advantage of hot water and the mean stress near an interface increased.

  • This study is conducted to improve the efficiency of a thermal storage tank. The thermal storage tank was designed to store heat energy that obtained from the solar or the others heat sources. However, it has difficulties in storing heat with nonuniform temperature through the entire tank with respect to the vertical direction, This study is focused on the thermal stratification to improve thermal comfort for the resident in house. To enhance temperature stratification of the tank, a distributor was designed and installed in the middle of the storage tank vertically. The vertically designed distributor could supply the return water with stratified temperature in the storage tank with respect to the height. The water velocity from the distributor hole is the same with the other outlet in the distributor. However, gravity effect on the flow in the storage tank is much higher than that of the velocity effect due to that Froude Number is less than 1. During the heat charging process in the storage tank, temperature maintained with little difference with respect to the height. However the charging process takes long time to get a effective temperature for the heating or hot water supply because of all of water in the storage tank needs to be heated.

  • The paper concentrates on an experimental study of the pressure drop in double-layered packed beds formed by glass spheres, having the configuration of horizontal and vertical stratification. Both single-phase and two-phase flow tests are performed. The pressure drop during the test is recorded and the measured data are compared with those of homogeneous beds consisting of mono-size particles. The results show that for the horizontally stratified bed with fine particles atop coarse particles, the pressure drop in top layer is found higher than those of homogenous bed consisting of the same smaller size particles, while the measured pressure drop of bottom part is similar with those of similar homogenous bed. But for the homologous bed with upside-down structure, the stratification has little or no effect on the pressure drop of the horizontally stratified bed, and the pressure drop of each layer is almost same as that of homogeneous bed packed with corresponding spheres. Additionally, in vertically stratified bed, the pressure drops on the left and right side is almost equal and between those in homogeneous beds. It is speculated that vertically stratified structure may lead to lateral flow which redistributes the flow rate in different parts of packed bed.

  • In this paper, an unsteady analytical model for the thermal stratification in the pressurizer surge line of PWR plant has been proposed to investigate the temperature profile, flow characteristics, and thermal stress in the pipe. In this model, the interface level, between hot and cold fluid, is assumed to be a function of time while the other models had developed for time independent or steady state. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using a SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm. The analysis result for an example shows that the maximum dimensionless temperature difference is about 0.78 between hot and cold sections of pipe wall and the maximum thermal stress by thermal stratification is calculated about 276 MPa at the dimensionless time 27.0 under given conditions.
