Cheolwon Group in the Cheolwon Basin, which lies northwest of the Gyeonggi massif, has been correlated to the Yucheon Group in the Gyeongsang Basin, but its ages and volcanic times are defined to be considerately earlier than the other one. In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb ages were determined from the igneous rocks in the Cheolwon Basin. The mean ages from zircons are $115.0{\pm}1.1Ma$ in rhyolite, and $111.24{\pm}0.85Ma$ and $109.1{\pm}1.1Ma$ in granite porphyry. The minimum age is 113 Ma in the Jijangbong Tuff. Such age in the rhyolite define the intrusion time of ring dykes, suggesting a caldera collapse following eruption of the Dongmakgol Tuff. Such age in the Jijangbong Tuff represent latest volcanism as postcaldera in the basin. The volcanic rocks in the basin were erupted during late Aptian, and are correlated to the Sindong Group in the Gyeongsang Basin. The plutonism in the basin occurred during $111.24{\pm}0.85Ma{\sim}109.1{\pm}1.1Ma$, following the volcanism. The age distribution of the analyzed zircons in the Jijangbong Tuff indicates the presence of foreign zircons derived from protoliths, regarding a wide span of zircon ages from Cretaceous to Jurassic, Triassic, early and late Protozoic, and Archean. The Archean age suggests the possible presence of the Archean protoliths with such age, which have not been exposed on the surface. The age distribution with wide span suggests that its vent is located in an area that several strata with different ages piled up and intercepted with some intrusives.
A paleomagnetic investigation for the Cretaceous rocks in the Buyeo and Hampyeong Basins, located out of the Gyeongsang Basin, was carried out in order to elucidate the paleomagnetic directions in conjunction with the formation of the basins. Typical stepwise thermal demagnetization and measurement methods were used to determine the directions of characteristic remanent magnetizations (ChRMs). The mean direction of the sedimentary rocks from the Buyeo Basin after bedding correction $(D/I=356.5^{\circ}/61.5^{\circ},\;k=39.3\;\alpha_{95}=7.4^{\circ})$, is more dispersed than that before bedding correction $(D/I=356.5^{\circ}/61.5^{\circ},\;k=39.3\;\alpha_{95}=7.4^{\circ})$, which suggests that the rocks in the Buyeo Basin were remagnetized. However, the statistics and dispersion of the ChRM directions after bedding correction are still acceptable and the paleomagnetic pole position after tilt correction $(Lat./Long.=69.3^{\circ}N/186.7^{\circ}E,\;K=11.6\;A_{95}=14.0^{\circ})$ is closer to that of the Late Cretaceous pole of the Korean Peninsula. More detailed study is needed to confirm the nature of the remagnetization in the Buyeo Basin. On the other hand, the paleomagnetic pole before bedding correction $(Lat./Long.=81.6^{\circ}N/106.9^{\circ}E,\;K=25.1\;A_{95}=9.3^{\circ})$ is positioned near the paleogene pole of the Eurasian APWP. The mean ChRM direction of the sedimentary rocks from the Hampyeong Basin after bedding correction is $D/I=32.5^{\circ}/55.4^{\circ},\;(k=35.6,\;\alpha_{95}=8.7^{\circ})$. It is more clustered than that before bedding correction $D/I=18.3^{\circ}/62.5^{\circ},\;k=14.1,\;\alpha_{95}=14.2^{\circ})$, indicating that the ChRM was acquired before tilting of the strata. The paleomagnetic pole position of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Hampyeong Basin, averaged out of site pole positions calculated from the tilt-corrected ChRMs, is $Lat./Long.=63.9^{\circ}N/202.7^{\circ}E,\;(K=21.3,\;A_{95}=7.6^{\circ})$, similar to the Late Cretaceous paleomagnetic pole of the Korean Peninsula $(Lat./Long.=70.9^{\circ}N/215.4^{\circ}E,\;A_{95}=5.3^{\circ})$, suggesting that the Hampyeong Basin has been stable since the Late Cretaceous period. One normal and two reversed ChRM directions are revealed through the measurements of the volcanic rocks from the Hampyeong Basin. Although these normal and reversed directions are not exactly antipodal, it is interpreted that the normal direction is the representative primary direction of the volcanic rocks of the Hampyeong Basin and the mixed polarity is the records of geomagnetic field at the time of the formation of the volcanic rocks. Paleomagnetic poles are at $Lat./Long.=70.2^{\circ}N/199.5^{\circ}E,\;(K=18.1,\;A_{95}=9.6^{\circ})$ for the normal direction, and $Lat./Long.=65.5^{\circ}S/251.3^{\circ}E,\;(K=7.1,\;A_{95}=20.7^{\circ})$ for the reversed direction. Compared with the representative pole positions of the Cretaceous period of the Korean Peninsula, it is concluded that the age of the volcanic rocks in the Hampyeong Basin is of the Late Cretaceous.
The Cretaceous and the Upper Jurassic strata of the Korean Peninsula, entirely of continental facies, form a sedimentary mega-unit subdivided into three unconformity-bounded units. The lower, Upper Jurassic-early Lower Cretaceous unit (Jasong Synthem) occurs profusely in North Korea and is characterized by volcanic rocks of intermediate to acidic, calc-alkaline to alkaline compositions; but strata of this unit is very rare in South Korea. The middle, Hauterivian-Lower Albian unit occurs commonly in the Korean Peninsula, but some alkalinesubalkaline basalt and andesite occur only in South Korea. A recently obtained U-Pb isochron age about 113.6 Ma (Chang et at, 1998) from the zircon grains of the Kusandong Tuff in the uppermost part of the Haman Formation has thrown much light on the age of this unit. The stratotype of this Hauterivian-L. Albian unit is the Sindong and Hayang Groups of the Kyongsang Basin, where the unit is about twice thick and has more conglomerates than in sedimentary basins in North Korea. The unit shows various sedimentary cycles in different basins showing that the cyclicity is controlled by local crustal motion. The upper, Upper Albian-Upper Cretaceous unit is abundant in South Korea with prolific volcanic rocks which are intermediate to acidic and notably calc-alkaline. In North Korea, however, this unit occurs in only one locality without volcanic rocks and is not voluminous. The distribution of these three unconformity-bounded units shows a stepwise younging toward the Pacific Ocean: the lower unit occurs mainly in N Korea, the middle unit occurs in both N and S Korea, and the upper unit occurs mainly in the southern part of S Korea. The Cretaceous sedimentary basins of S Korea were genetically controlled by paralleling sinistral strike-slip faults parallel to the Pacific margin.
The Zagros fold-thrust belt formed from the collision of the Arabian and Eurasian plates during Cenozoic periods and extends for 2,000 km, from Turkey to the Hormuz Strait, in the northeast-southwest direction. Anticline traps in the front of the Zagros thrust fold hold approximately 8% of the world's petroleum reserves. Middle Cretaceous to Early Miocene petroleum systems of the belt have the largest original oil in place (OOIP). The oil is expelled from Kazhdumi and Pabdeh source rocks, and accumulated in the Asmari and Bangestan (including Sarvak and Ilam formations) reservoir rocks covered by the evaporitic Gachsaran and the marly Gurpi formations. The hydrocarbons trapped in the Asmari and Sarvak reservoirs are mainly charged (more than 90%) by the Kazhdumi Formation whereas the rest are charged by the Pabdeh Formation. In the Dezful Embayment, all the large high-relief anticlines have been drilled into, except in the Asmari, Sarvak and Khami formations, where a few anticlines of smaller size and deeper strata remain unexplored. Therefore, the exploration potential of these regions strengthens our understanding of the Zagros fold-thrust belt's petroleum system.

This study aims to establish the age of the Cretaceous Togeum Formation in Gurye that reported the discovery of dinosaur eggshells and bones. This study also investigates to determine the period of the dinosaurs' dominance in the region. K-Ar ages are measured on the whole volcanic rocks in the lower - and upper parts of the formation. The six samples dated are volcanic pebbles deposited in the Geumjeongri Conglomerate that is distributed underneath the Togeum Formation, and the ages dated as Aptian ($118.3{\pm}2.3Ma$) or Albian ($103.6{\pm}2.0$, $102.5{\pm}2.0$, $99.9{\pm}1.9Ma$), which all correspond to the Early Cretaceous. In addition, the ages of andesites and porphyritic andesites overlying the Togeum Formation are dated in a similar way. The result is that the ages are apparently corresponding to the Campanian ($83.9{\pm}1.6$, $74.2{\pm}1.5$Ma) of the Late Cretaceous. Field evidence and the age results indicate that the formation of the Togeum and the activities of dinosaurs dated back between 84 and 100Ma. It suggests that the Togeum Formation be somewhat older than the Boseong Seonso Formation (81Ma) which contains egg shells, the Haenam Uhangni Formation (79-81 Ma) that has dinosaur, pterosaur and webbed bird footprints, and also older than the theropod egg nests (77-83Ma) found in the Aphaedo area.
Hydrogeological survey and geophysical prospecting have been carried out in Saudi Arabia for the purpose of finding groundwater in the soil and rock at the request of General trading company in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The surveyed area is located on $38^{\circ}-39^{\circ}$ 30' in longitude and $26^{\circ}-26^{\circ}$ 30' in latitude. The topography of this area is dominated by northwest southeast mountain range composed mostly of precambrian rocks and basalt of tertiary period. Geology is mainly composed of greenstone, granite, andesite, diorite rhyolite of pre-cambrian era and sandstone of cambrian period which are underlained by basalt and andesite of tertiary period and alluvium of quaternary unconformably. The instruments used in this investigation are TR-18B2 radioactivity unit which isjapanese patented and A.C. Terrameter, a resistivity meter manufactured by ABEM of Stockholm, Sweden. Radioactivity method has been conducted along the Alula-Khaybar road, totally 164Km by the car-borne. As a result of the above survey 16 places have been selected and these anomalies show 1.2N-1.6N compared to background of each area in intensity with width of 10-50m. Resistivity vertical profiling which made use of Schlumberger configuration method has been made over selected areas by radioactivity method to provide hydrogeological information for a water resources survey. The result of resistivity shows that good aquifers are located in the western part of surveyed area where sedimentary rock is distributed. The strata showing 10-50, ${\Omega}-m$ in resistivity are thought to be waterbearing layer. The variations in aquifer resistivity found, are thought to be due to verying clay content, which could be related to aquifer yield. It has proved impossible to detect small salinity variation in the buried aquifer by geophysics. As a result of resistivity prospecting 10 places are recommended to be drilled at the anomalies as shown attached map. yields from the proposed holes have been estimated approximately from $20m^3$ to $200m^3$ per day. Prior to drilling for groundwater, test boring using ${\c}4"$ should be drilled in order to obtain more reliable hydrogeological information for the construction of perfect wells.ells.
Analysis on high-resolution seismic and core data reveals that the sedimentary strata in Gyeonggi Bay consists of four sedimentary units (Unit I-IV, from top to bottom) formed during the late Quaternary period. Unit I is interpreted as sediments of tidal flat and channel-fill deposits, formed during the Holocene transgression. Unit II is divided into shallow-marine facies unit in offshore area and channelized fluvial to estuarine facies unit in nearshore sand ridge and tidal flat. Unit III is considered as tidal flat deposits with the uppermost severely weathered and oxydized layers. This unit is composed of shallow marine sedimentary successions formed during the MIS-5 highstand. The lowermost Unit IV rests on Mesozoic basement rocks, considered as the shallow marine and shelf deposits formed before the MIS-5 lowstand.
New Orleans located in the estuary of the Mississippi River was attacked by Hurricane Katrina and suffered big flood on August 2005. Since unconsolidated Holocene to middle Miocene strata is the main basement rocks, land subsidence has been occurred steadily due to soil compaction and normal faulting. It was reported that the maximum subsidence rate from 2002 to 2005 was -29 mm/yr. Many studies in the area have been carried out for understanding the subsiding and potential risks caused by ground subsidence are weighted by the fact that a large area of the city is located below the mean sea level. A small baseline subset (SBAS) method is applied for effectively measuring time-series LOS (Line-of sight) surface deformation from differential synthetic aperture radar interferograms in this study. The time-series surface deformation at New Orleans was measured from RADARSAT-1 SAR images. The used dataset consists of twenty-one RADARSAT-1 fine beam mode images on descending orbits from February 2005 to February 2007 and another twenty-one RADARSAT-1 standard beam mode images on ascending orbits from January 2005 to February 2007. From this dataset, 25 and 38 differential interferograms on descending and ascending orbits were constructed, respectively. The vertical and horizontal components of surface deformation were extracted from ascending and descending LOS surface deformations. The result from vertical component of surface deformation indicates that subsidence is not significant with a mean rate of -3.1${\pm}$3.2 mm/yr.
In order to understand the broad outline and palaeobotanical significances, the fossil woods from the Korean Peninsula were integrated through the literature surveys. Types and diversity of them are gradually increasing from Mesozoic to Cenozoic, especially increased sharply in Cenozoic. During the Early Mesozoic, six conifer taxa belonging to four genera were described, which corresponds to about 6% of the Daedong flora. Those of the Late Mesozoic are all conifers, consisting of fifteen taxa belonging to seven genera, which corresponds to about 29% of the Nakdong flora. During the Neogene, thirty four taxa belong to sixteen families were described. Those woods mostly consist of dicotyledon and have the greatest diversity compared to other geologic eras, which corresponds to about 83% of the Janggi flora. It is inferred that such a rapid increase of the silicified wood fossils in Neogene are due to the abundant presence of dicotyledon in floral composition and of pyroclastic rocks in strata, which are appropriate for preserving wood as fossils.
In Danyang area, various geological structures as well as various lithology and strata are well developed, which are useful for studying paleo-environment and structural movements, and also typical karst landforms, wethering landforms and river landforms. If geologically and geomorphologically valuable resources are used in terms of geotourim perspective, it is expected that revitalization of regional economy through diversification of attracting factors and employment creation of local people. Danyang has many excellent geological resources for geological field trip, they can greatly contribute to the development of geology such as expanding the base of geology and cultivating successive generations. In this study, we have evaluated newly discovered sites and previously excavated resources based on academical and educational values. By using these geological and geomorphological resources, we suggest three geotrail courses as follows. First, Geo-trail A is mainly focused on geological structures (Route A: Jeong Hwan Route), where we can learn geological deformation and movement through various brittle and ductile deformation structures. Second, Geo-trail B is mainly focused on stratigraphic importance (Route B: Soon-Bok Route), which emphasizes on various rocks, strata and contact relationship. Third, Geo-trail C is mainly focused on geomorphological landforms and landscapes (Route C: Satgat Route), which provide information about different geomorphological landforms and the interaction between different geological agents. In order to operate these geotrail courses efficiently, installation of explanation boards and view points, cultivate local commentators, and visitor centers and experience programs should be properly prepared together.
