This paper presents results from a wind tunnel study that examined the drag coefficient and wind flow over an asymmetric wave train immersed in turbulent boundary layer flow. The modeled wavy surface consisted of eight replicas of a statistically-valid hurricane-generated wave, located near the coast in the shoaling wave region. For an aerodynamically rough model surface, the air flow remained attached and a pronounced speed-up region was evident over the wave crest. A wavelength-averaged drag coefficient was determined using the wind profile method, common to both field and laboratory settings. It was found that the drag coefficient was approximately 50% higher than values obtained in deep water hurricane conditions. This study suggests that nearshore wave drag is markedly higher than over deep water waves of similar size, and provides the groundwork for assessing the impact of nearshore wave conditions on storm surge modeling and coastal wind engineering.

In this study, shallow-water design waves are calculated for the return period of 10, 20, 30, and 50 years, based on the extreme value analysis of the wave measurement data at Gangneung beach. These values are compared with the results of SWAN simulation with the boundary condition of the deep-water design waves of the corresponding return periods at the Gangneung sea area provided by the Fisheries Agency (FA, 1988) and Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI, 2005). It is found that the shallow-water wave heights at Gangneung beach calculated by the deep-water design waves were significantly less than the observation data. As the return period becomes higher, the significant wave heights obtained by the extreme value analysis becomes higher than those computed by SWAN with the deep-water design waves of the corresponding return periods. KORDI computed the hindcast wave data from January 2004 to August 2008 by WAM with a finer-grid mesh system than those of previous studies. Comparisons of the wave hindcast results with the wave observation show that the reproducibility of the winter-season storm wave was considerably improved compared to the hindcast data from 1979 to 2003. Hereafter, it is necessary to carry out hindcast wave data for the years before 2004 using WAM with the finer-grid mesh system and to supplement the deep-water design wave.

Numerical simulations of the storm surge and the wave induced by the Typhoon Sanba incident on the south coast of Korea in 2012 are conducted using the JMA-MSM forecast weather field, NCEP-CFSR reanalysis weather field, ECMWF-ERA5 reanalysis weather field, and the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by JTWC. The calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbors along the coasts of Korea. For the waves the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys and the underwater pressure type wave gauge. As a result the JMA-MSM and the NCEP-CFSR weather fields give the highest reliability. The ECMWF-ERA5 gives in general surge and wave heights weaker than the measured. The ECMWF-ERA5, however, reproduces the best convergence belt formed in front of the typhoon. The weather field obtained using JTWC best track information gives the worst agreement.

In recent years, strong typhoons have passed South Korea almost every year and severe damages were incurred directly and indirectly. However, instances where wave and wind data were procured from the offshore approach path of the typhoon are very rare and thus researchers are experiencing difficulties in obtaining calibration and verification data of typhoon-generated wave modeling. This paper provides a synthesis of records of observations by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology on storm waves generated by the typhoons SONGDA, NABI, and SHANSHAN that passed from 2004 to 2006 in order to help researchers interested in typhoon-generated wave numerical modeling. Although the trajectories of typhoon NABI and SHANSHAN were east of the Korea Strait, a significant wave height of 8.3 m was measured at Namhyeongjedo located east of Geojedo. Moreover, an unprecedented significant wave height of 12.2 m was measured for both typhoons at a station 1.4 km away from Yeongil Bay breakwater. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis of data obtained with a ocean data buoy at Geojedo and a Directional Waverider at Namhyeongjedo showed maximum wave heights that were similar but considerably different significant wave heights.

The frequency of natural disasters and the scale of damage are increasing due to the abnormal weather phenomenon that occurs worldwide. Especially, damage caused by natural disasters in coastal areas around the world such as Earthquake in Japan, Hurricane Katrina in the United States, and Typhoon Maemi in Korea are huge. If we can predict the damage scale in response to disasters, we can respond quickly and reduce damage. In this study, we developed damage prediction functions for Wind waves caused by sea breezes and waves during various natural disasters. The disaster report (1991 ~ 2017) has collected the history of storm and typhoon damage in coastal areas in Korea, and the amount of damage has been converted as of 2017 to reflect inflation. In addition, data on marine weather factors were collected in the event of storm and typhoon damage. Regression analysis was performed through collected data, Finally, predictive function of the sea turbulent damage by the sea area in 74 regions of the country were developed. It is deemed that preliminary damage prediction can be possible through the wind damage prediction function developed and is expected to be utilized to improve laws and systems related to disaster statistics.

Recently, a port city has been gradually expanding near coastal area, and many facilities for tourism and waterfront have been constructed near the shore. When storm surge developed by typhoon have occurred, coastal facilities have a lot of damage and failure with loss of life caused directly by the waves. Various barriers have been suggested to protect property and human life from disasters, they have not been widely applied though. Because they do not satisfy the recent trends that emphasize the surrounding scenery. In this study, a moveable barrier on revetment is proposed against wave overtopping. This moveable barrier has two function, sightseeing and protecting. In case of usual day, it is installed on the revetment and used observatory deck for sightseeing. When wave overtopping has occurred by storm surge, it protect coastal area through changing of flat deck to triangular barrier. The hydraulic and the structural performance of the newly proposed movable barrier was investigated through numerical analysis using commercial program. As a results, this structure has numerically good performance, and follow-up research is required through experimental tests though.

Tractive forces by flowing water and ship generated waves are items that affect the stability of the low flow revetments among various external forces exerting on those revetments. Bank revetment stability by these external forces is analysed in this study. The study area is the section of the test construction area changing the artificial revetments to ecological revetments in Han river. Tractive forces are computed using the calculated flow velocity using RMA-2 model. The stability is analyzed comparing the calculated tractive forces with permissible tractive forces of the revetments in the study area. The calculated tractive forces at section number 93 is higher than permissible tractive forces in that section, so the section is estimated hydraulically unstable. The calculated tractive forces for the storm of 10th August 2007 are small compared to the permissible tractive forces in all sections. The sections are considered to be hydraulically stable, but have been eroded in some parts. The reason for the erosion is considered to have insufficient time for the plants taking root, and be exerted composite forces such as forces by ship generated waves. Ship generated waves by the excursion boats and small boats called river taxi was calculated. Wave forces by these calculated waves are computed and compared with the supporting forces of the revetment material. The external forces exerted by the ships in Han River on the revetments is very little compared with the permissible supporting forces of the revetments, so the revetments are estimated hydraulically stable. But considering the composite forces are exerted simultaneously, the stability consideration should include these composite forces.

This paper presents the development of dynamically combined Typhoon generated surge-tide-wave numerical model which is applicable from deep to shallow water. The dynamically coupled model consists of hydrodynamic module and wind wave module. The hydrodynamic module is modified from POM and wind wave module is modified from WAM to be applicable from deep to shallow water. Hydrodynamic module computes tidal currents, sea surface elevations and storm surges and provide these information to wind wave module. Wind wave mudule computes wind waves and provides computed information such as radiation stress, sea surface roughness and shear stress due to winds. The newly developed model was applied to compute the surge, tide and wave fields by typhoon Maemi. Verification of model performance was made by comparison of measured waves and tide data with simulated results.
As a transition region between ocean and land, coastal wetlands are significant ecosystems that maintain water quality, provide natural habitat for a variety of species, and slow down erosion. The energy of coastal waves and storm surges are reduced by vegetation cover, which also helps to maintain wetlands through increased sediment deposition. Wave attenuation by vegetation is a highly dynamic process and its quantification is important for understanding shore protection and modeling coastal hydrodynamics. In this study, laboratory experiments were used to quantify wave attenuation as a function of vegetation type as well as wave conditions. Wave attenuation characteristics were investigated under regular waves for rigid model vegetation. Laboratory hydraulic test and numerical analysis were conducted to investigate regular wave attenuation through emergent vegetation with wave steepness ak and relative water depth kh. The normalized wave attenuation was analyzed to the decay equation of Dalrymple et al.(1984) to determine the vegetation transmission coefficients, damping factor and drag coefficients. It was found that drag coefficient was better correlated to Keulegan-Carpenter number than Reynolds number and that the damping increased as wave steepness increased.

Before (March 26, 1994) or after the occurrence of a downslope windstorm (March 29), the NO, $NO_2$, and $SO_2$ at the ground level of Kangnung city were monitored with high concentrations in the afternoon, due to a large amount of gases emitted from combustion of motor vehicle and heating apparatus, especially near 1600-1800 LST and 2000-2100 LST, but at night, they had low concentrations, resulting from small consumptions of vehicle and heating fuels. When both moderate westerly synoptic-scale winds flow over Mt. Taegwallyang and easterly meso-scale sea breeze during the day, atmospheric pollutants should be trapped by two different wind systems, resulting in higher concentration at Kangnung city in the afternoon. At night, the association of westerly synoptic wind and land breeze can produce relatively strong winds and the dissipation by the winds cause these low concentrations to lower and lower, as nightime goes on. From March 27 through 28, an enforced localized windstorm could be produced along the lee side of the mountain near Kangnung, generating westerly internal gravity waves with hydraulic jump motions. Sea breeze toward inland appartantly confines to the bottom of the eastern side of the mountain, due to the interruption of eastward violent internal gravity waves. As the windstorm moves down toward the ground, an encountering point of two opposite winds approaches Kangnung, and a great amount of NO and $NO_2$ were removed by the strong surface winds. Thus, their maximum concentrations are found to be near 18 and 20 LST, 17 and 21 LST. In the nighttime, the more developed storm should produce very strong surface winds and the NO and $NO_2$ could be easily dissipated into other place. The $SO_2$ concentration had no maximum value, that is, almost constant one all day long, due to its removal by the strong surface winds. Especially, the CO concentrations were slightly lower during the strom period than both before or after the strom, but they were nearly constant without much changes during the during the daytime and nighttime.
