Recent changes in the disaster environment have greatly increased the possibility of internal erosion in deteriorated reservoirs; thus, countermeasure methods are required to enhance the drainage performance of embankments. Sand filters have been mainly used to prevent internal erosion; however, due to the sand depletion and environmental problems, new alternative materials are required to replace the sand in the filter zone. In this study, crushed stone was used instead of sand as a material that could satisfy permeability, material supply, demanding conditions, and economic efficiency. Although crushed stone has excellent drainage performance, it has a clogging phenomenon due to its high permeability. Accordingly, the materials need to be separated with a geotextile wrapping method. Additionally, the 3D numerical analysis and a large model experiment were conducted to evaluate the seepage characteristics and in-site application of the crushed stone filter. As a result, the crushed stone filter showed an excellent dispersion effect by reducing the pore water pressure by about 9.5 times that of the sand filter. In addition, it was shown that the safety factor for piping increased significantly by reducing internal erosion. When comparing the economics and supply and demand conditions of the material, crushed stone was evaluated as an effective method to reduce the internal erosion of embankments at deteriorated reservoirs.
Stone masonry is one of the oldest construction types due to the natural and free availability of stones and the relatively easy construction. Since stone masonry is brittle, it is also very vulnerable and in the case of earthquakes damage, collapses and causalities are very likely to occur, as it has been seen during the last Italian earthquake in Amatrice in 2016. In the recent years, some researchers have performed experimental tests to improve the knowledge of the behaviour of stone masonry. Concurrently, there is the need to reproduce the seismic behaviour of these structures by numerical approaches, also in consideration of the high cost of experimental tests. In this work, an alternative simplified procedure to numerically reproduce the diagonal compression and shear compression tests on a rubble stone masonry is proposed within the finite element method. The proposed procedure represents the stone units as rigid bodies and the mortar as a plastic material with compression and tension inelastic behaviour calibrated based on parametric studies. The validation of the proposed model was verified by comparison with experimental data. The advantage of this simplified methodology is the use of a limited number of degrees of freedom which allows the reduction of the computational time, which leaves the possibility to carry out parametric studies that consider different wall configurations.

The stone pagoda continued to be damaged by weathering and corrosion over time, and natural disasters such as earthquake are accelerating the destruction of cultural properties. Stone pagoda has discontinuous structure behavior and is very vulnerable to the seismic load acting in lateral direction. It is necessary to analyze various design variables as the contact surface characteristics play an important role in the dynamic behavior of stone pagodas. For this purpose, contact surface characteristics of stone pagoda can be classified according to surface roughness and filler type, and representative model is selected and structural modeling and analysis are performed using the discrete element method. Also, the seismic load according to the repetition period is calculated and the dynamic analysis is performed considering the discontinuous characteristics of the stone pagoda. Finally, the seismic behavior characteristics can be analyzed by the evaluation of stresses, displacements and structural safety.

It is inevitable to use the distinct element method in the analysis of structural dynamics for stacked stone pagoda system. However, the experimental verification of analytical results produced by the discrete element method is not sufficient yet, and the theory of distinct element method is not universal in Korea. This study introduces how to model the stacked stone pagoda system using the distinct element method, and draws some considerations in the seismic analysis procedures. First, the rocking mode and sliding mode are locally mixed in the seismic responses. Second, the vertical stiffness and the horizontal stiffness on the friction surface have the greatest influence on the seismic behavior. Third, the complete seismic analysis of stacked stone pagoda system requires a set of the horizontal, vertical, and rotational velocity time histories of the ground. However, earthquake data monitored in Korea are limited to acceleration and velocity signals in some areas.
We can see interactions between rigid body and fluid every day, anywhere. This kind of rigid body-fluid simulation is one of the most difficult problems in physically-based modeling, mainly due to heavy computations. In this paper, we present a real-time dynamics model for simulating stone skipping, which is a popular rigid body-fluid interaction in the real world. In comparison to the previous works, our improved dynamics model supports the rotation of the stones and also computes frictional forces with respect to the air. We can simulate a realistic result for various user input by using proposed model. Additionally, we present a water surface model to show more realistic ripples interactively. Our methods can be easily adapted to other interactive dynamics systems including 3D game engines.

This study was performed to measure the accuracy of different gypsum materials by a white light dental scanner. A master model with the prepared lower full arch tooth was used. The type IV and scannable stone were used for 20 stone casts (10 casts each) duplicated a master model of mandible. The distance between the reference points were measured and analyzed by the Delcam $Copycad^{(R)}$ (Delcam Plc, UK) 3D graphic software. The t-student test for paired samples were used for statistical analysis. The mean differences to master model for type IV stone and scannable stone model were 0.29~0.56 mm, and 0.17~0.35 mm, respectively. There were statistical differences in dimensional accuracy for full arch impression between the master model and type IV/scannable stone (p<0.05). Two different gypsum materials showed clinically acceptable accuracies of full arch digital impression produced by them. Besides, in both gypsum materials, the differences to the master model detected appear to provide enough accuracy for clinical application.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic ability of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for Composition determination of urinary stones in phantom model. Seventeen cases with urinary stones who underwent DECT were enrolled in the study. The composition of the urinary stones was extracted from the seventeen patients were analyzed with DECT in phantom model with fresh pork. The volume scan method using Dual-energy software was used and the scanned image sets were assessed. All 17 urinary stones of the phantom model were analyzed according to the stone composition using DE stone Analysis were divided into uric acid stones (n=6, 35.29%) and non-uric acid stones (n=11, 64.71%). These urinary stones were pathologically confirmed. The mean attenuation values of uric acid stones at 135 kV, 100 kV and 80 kV was 348.87 ± 166.37 HU, 345.33 ± 151.18 HU and 337.94 ± 172.77 HU, respectively. The mean attenuation values of non-uric acid stones at 135 kV, 100 kV and 80 kV was 551.93 ± 297.09 HU, 747.04 ± 351.31 HU and 958.19 ± 424.72 HU, respectively. At 80 kV, uric acid stones and non-uric acid stones showed significant difference in the attenuation values(P<0.05). The attenuation values of DECT could differentiate the compositions of urinary stones between uric acid and non-uric acid stones at 80 kV in phantom model.

Purpose: The objects of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the dental stone casts made from alginate impressions according to storage condition and stone pouring time. Materials and Methods: Each of upper and lower impressions of dental model was taken. The dental stone models were made immediately, 10, 30, 60, 180, 360 minutes after the impressions were taken at each storage condition. 3D models were constructed by scanning the stone model using 3D laser scanner. With Reference points, positioned on digital models, linear measurements of the dimensional change were compared by 3D metrology software, 3D average models were made and superimposition to identify the specific site of dimensional change and to measure surface deviation (mm). Results: Dental stone models which were made immediately after taking the impression showed the smallest linear dimensional change. As the stone pouring time was prolonged, the linear dimensional change was increased. More than 180 minutes after impression taking, linear dimensional change and surface distortion increased in the posterior molar region, regardless of the storage condition. Conclusion: For the optimum accuracy of the dental stone casts, alginate impression should be poured as soon as possible. If there were a need for storing, a humidor with 100% relative humidity must be used and be stored less than 180 minutes to fabricate the accurate dental model.
The indirect technique for making cast restoration requires that dies be as accurate and durable as possible. Currently, stone is the most commonly used material for die. However, it has some problems such as the weakness in its strength and low abrasion resistance. Recently, epoxy resin die systems have become available. The purpose of this study was to examine two commercially available resin die systems and evaluate some characteristics for their clinical performance. This study evaluated the dimensional accuracy of epoxy resins and their wettability with impression materials. In this study, the first experiment was about dimensional accuracy of different die materials. The master model was made of stainless steel. 10 models were made of two epoxy resins (Die-epoxy, Tri-epoxy) and a die stone (Fujirock) each. Occlusal diameter (Dimension I), occluso-gingival height (Dimension II), and interabutment distance (Dimension III) were measured in each model. Next, the contact angles of die materials with impression materials were observed. The blocks were made of polyether, hydrophilic additional silicone, polysulfide impression materials. By drop-ping the same amount (0.05ml) of Tri-epoxy, Die-epoxy, and die stone on the blocks, 10 samples of each die material were made. After setting of materials, the contact angles were measured. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The expansion of stone die and the shrinkage of resin dies in occlusal diameter were observed, and stone and Tri-epoxy were expanded and Die-epoxy was shrinked in occluso-gingival height. There was little change among materials in interabutment distance (p<0.05). 2. In comparison with the master model Tri-epoxy had the least variation in measurement of the three die systems examined. Die-epoxy was next, and die stone showed the greatest variation. 3. The compatibility of die stone for polyether, hydrophilic additional silicone, polysulfide decreased in order, wherease epoxy materials had the decreased compatibility for polyether and polysulnde, hydrophilic additional silicone in order. It was not statistically different between polyether and polysulfide (p<0.05). 4. The contact angles of Tri-epoxy, Die-epoxy, die stone were getting bigger in order.
Until recently the other attempts except linear elastic analysis using assumed elastic modulus had not been made in order to evaluate the settlement of the rock fill materials in Korea. Especially, it was almost impossible to predict the precise settlement of the breakwater structure made with dumped rubble stone. In this study, 3 sets of large scaled triaxial compression tests for porous basaltic quarry rocks were carried out and numerical simulation of those triaxial compression tests were performed applying non linear elastic model. Two stress-strain behaviors were compared to study the adaptability of hyperbolic constitutive model for the rubble stone. The results showed quite good agreements between the two stress-strain behaviors. Thus, the hyperbolic constitutive model is thought to be alternative approach evaluate the settlements of the loose rock-fill material.
