This study was conducted to investigate the effect of reflective film(RF) mulching on the growth and flowering of snapdragon 'Fujinoyuki' in greenhouse cultivation. On the spectroradiometry of mulching materials in the wavelength zone of 300nm to 1100nm, 85% of total light source was reflected from RF, while over 95% was absorbed into black polyethylene film(BL). Under plant canopy, light, air temperature, and leaf temperature were higher on the RF mulching than BL, but soil temperature and soil heat flux were higher under the BL. Primary plant growth such as dry weight, stem hardness, lodging, and transpiration was superior when using RF mulching. RF mulching accelerated the plants to bloom about 12 days earlier with admirable cut flower quality.
To investigate the alterations in the ultrastructure of leaves by acid rain, 10mm of SAR(Simulated Acid Rain, pH 2.0, 2.7, 3.0, 6.0) was applied to three crops(red-pepper, perilla, eggplant) at a two-day interval. The symptoms of leaf damage by SAR were observed by naked eyes and SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope), and the peroxidase activity in the leaves was measured. The results are summarized as follows : The severity of SAR damages to the crops observed by naked eye were in the decreasing order of red-pepper, perilla, and eggplant. The Symptoms were characterized by brown or white spots on the leaf surface. In the SAR treatment of pH 3.0, trichomes of all crops except for eggplant were damaged. By the SAR treatment of pH 2.7, stomata were damaged in all crops. With one time treatment of SAR, the peroxidase activity of perilla was rapidly increased.
Three horticultural herbaceous plants and a natural herbaceous plant were tested to determine the growth responses, biomass and uptake of cadmium(cd), lead(pb) by application of cd and pb soil treatment in pot culture. The ecological effects on the growth of the plants were investigated to determine the tolerance for the heavy metal pollutants cd and pb. the marginal concentrain of cd treatment on the growth of the each plant was below the 1, 000 ppm treatment of cd. The marginal concentration of pb treatment was below the 1, 000ppm treatment of pb in cultivation of salvia splendens ker., celosia cristata l. and below the 3, 000ppm treatment of pb in cultivation of portulaca grandiflora hook., sedum saramentosum bunge. the resistance for cd of sedum saramentosum bunge, celosia criastata l., portulaca grandiflora hook. and salvia splendens ker. was in the listed order. The resistence for pb was in order of sedum saramentosum bunge, portulaca grandiflora hook. Salvia splendens ker.and celosia criastata l.stems. The flowering of portulaca grandiflora hook. was sustained in the pb 1, 000ppm treated group only. The higher the concentration of pb in the soil cultivated the plants was, the less the content of leaf chlorophy11 in each plant was. The number of stomata per unit leaf area was the highest in salvia splendens ker. and in order of celosia l., sedum saramentosum bunge., portulaca grandiflora hook., the higher the cd and pb concentration of cd and pb treatment was, the more the concent of cd and pb in the part of each plant increased. the content of cd and pb in the stems of salvia spiendens ker. was the highest in the 1, 000ppm-treated ground and in order of the roots, the leaves and the flowers.
In order to investigate the ecotypic variations of pulsatilla koreana nakai distributed in korea, 8 local populations of the plant were selected in accordance with latitude and compared on the differences of leaf shape, elongstion, stomatal distribution and dhlorophyll content. The incised angle of the plant is 38。32' in cheju, showing a great difference as compared with 23。77'-30。 32' of the other sites. as to the incised rate, mt. togyu and cheju representsed relatively high values of 49.04% and 48.21% the parted leaved individuals were only observed along the warm current coastal area including cheju, sokcho and sunchon and were 54(62.8%), 2(2.5%) and 3(3.3%) in the sites, respectively. Especially, the individuals consisting of only parted learves were 5(5.8%) in cheju alone and none of the other sites showed such individuals at all. So p. cernua distributed in cheju and p. koreana in inland area can be considered to beecotypic variations of the same species from the upper investigations. According to the elongations of leaf and rachis, the local populations could be classified into 3 types, such as warm current coastal area type(cheju, sunchon and sokcho),southern inland area type(andong, chungju and mt. togyu)and central inland ara type(mt. komdan and hongchon). The dentate numbera of 39.80-43.73 in the warm current area were also different from those of 87% in mt.togyu and 15% in hongchon, while opposite leaflets account for 100% in the other sites. The content of chlorophyll ranged from 0.609 mg/g. d.w.(cheju)to 0.924 mg/g.d.w.(hongchon), showing an increasing trends as the latitudes grow higher. The number of stomata on the low epidermis is much larger than that on the upper epidermis in the whole area. But both aspects showed an increasing tendency, too as the latitude becomes higher.

Rhizobia are well-known for their ability to infect and nodulate legume roots, forming a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis of agricultural importance. In addition, recent studies have shown that rhizobia can colonize roots and aerial plant tissues of rice as a model plant of the Graminaceae family. Here we show that rhizobia can invade tobacco, a model plant belonging to the Solanaceae family. Inoculation of seedling. roots with five GFP-tagged rhizobial species followed by microscopy and viable plating analyses indicated their colonization of the surface and interior of the whole vegetative plant. Blockage of ascending epiphytic migration by coating the hypocotyls with Vaseline showed that the endophytic rhizobia can exit the leaf interior through stomata and colonize the external phyllosphere habitat. These studies indicate rhizobia can colonize both below- and above-ground tissues of tobacco using a dynamic invasion process that involves both epiphytic and endophytic lifestyles.
The histochemical characteristics of the cutaneous mucous glands and its fine structure of the Korean fire bellied toad, Bombina orientolis Boulenger, were studied with light and electron microscopes. The mucous glands of the toad are simple alveolar gland, and are composed of inner glandular epithelial cells and outermost myoepithelial cells. Histochemical studies suggest that main secretory materials released from the mucous glands might be acid mucopolysaccharides which is more abundant in the ventral skin than in the dorsal skin. The scanning electron microscopic observation showed that the morphology of the opening sites of the gland duct is similar to the morphology of stomata on the plant leaves. Glandular epithelial layers of the mucous glands are composed of two cell types, the mucous secreting cells and the mitochondria rich cells. The mucous secreting cells could be classified according to the morphology and inner textures of cytoplasm and those characteristics were seemed to be related to the degree of maturation of the cells. Furthermore the mucous within the mucous secreting cells appears to be synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
Hydrogen peroxide, which is used in various crops as an oxidizer to improve high temperature adaptation, was evaluated on the effects on productivity and disease incidence in paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) by periodic leaf spray at summer. Hydrogen peroxide treatment not only increased the leaf thickness and SPAD (chlorophyll content) but also the fruit set numbers per plant by 2. Hydrogen peroxide content increase in leaf resulted in increase of catalase and peroxidase activities, and the powdery mildew disease (Leveillula taurica) was also suppressed by the treatment. Transpiration was improved by the reduced leaf stomata resistance in the hydrogen peroxide treatment. Therefore, hydrogen peroxide leaf spray is recommended for improvement of summer productivity in paprika.

Stomata are the main gateways for water and air transport between leaves and the environment. Inward-rectifying potassium channels regulate photo-induced stomatal opening. Rice contains three inward rectifying shaker-like potassium channel proteins, OsKAT1, OsKAT2 and OsKAT3. Among these, only OsKAT2 is specifically expressed in guard cells. Here, we investigated the functions of OsKAT2 in stomatal regulation using three dominant negative mutant proteins, OsKAT2(T235R), OsKAT2(T285A) and OsKAT2(T285D), which are altered in amino acids in the channel pore and at a phosphorylation site. Yeast complementation and patch clamp assays showed that all three mutant proteins lost channel activity. However, among plants overexpressing these mutant proteins, only plants overexpressing OsKAT2(T235R) showed significantly less water loss than the control. Moreover, overexpression of this mutant protein led to delayed photo-induced stomatal opening and increased drought tolerance. Our results indicate that OsKAT2 is an inward-rectifying shaker-like potassium channel that mainly functions in stomatal opening. Interestingly, overexpression of OsKAT2(T235R) did not cause serious defects in growth or yield in rice, suggesting that OsKAT2 is a potential target for engineering plants with improved drought tolerance without yield penalty.
Ozone effects were studied by plant growth chamber to evaluate the impact of ozone ($O_3$) on the physiology of two hot pepper, Capsicum annuum L., cultivars, 'Dabotab' and 'Buchon'. Forty-day old plants with $5{\sim}7$ leaves were exposed to $O_3$ of <20 and 150 nL/L for 8h/d for 3 days. Net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were measured and foliar injury was described. Foliar damage due to the treated $O_3$ was different from the varieties. 'Dabotab' was most sensitive to $O_3$ and 'Buchon' was resistant. Symptom of ozone damage on the leaves was bifacial necrosis. Decreases of net photosynthesis by $O_3$ were 56% and 40% on 'Dabotab' and 'Buchon', respectively. Decreases of stomatal conductance by $O_3$ were 66% and 63% on each variety. $O_3$ damage on net photosynthesis was started at the low levels of light on the two hot peppers. In addition, assimilation-internal $CO_2$ concentration curves were not different from the two varieties. In conclusion, $O_3$ closed the stomata and decrease net photosynthesis on hot peppers regardless of the ozone sensitivity on leaf injury, but the difference of ecophysiological responses between the two varieties was not found clearly.
This study was conducted to be used as basic data of environmental friendly construction planning by comparing and analyzing thermal environment, find particles and biotope area rate according to land cover types of outside space of schools located in Chung-ju. When meteorological factors were analyzed according to land cover types, for temperature planting area and paved area showed low-and high-temperature ranges, respectively, and relative humidity was negatively related with temperature as low-and high-temperature ranges corresponded to high-and low-humidity ranges, respectively. For Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Index (WBGT) by land cover types, it was observed to be artificial grass> bare land> natural grass. Find particles were different according to land cover types of playground with being bare land> artificial grass> natural grass in the order. Bare land playground, where there were artificial factors and no absorption of fine particles through stomata of leaves as a function of natural circulation, recorded the highest level of $39.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and the level was relatively higher compared to the levels by season in Chung-ju. Biotope area rate showed the order of M elementary school> K elementary school> C commercial high school. That was considered to be caused by the difference of land cover type of school playground accounting for a large part of a school.
