Cracks in concrete can submit shear forces by virtue of the roughness of their interfaces. With regard to this roughness, the crack faces play an important role. By transmitting normal and shear stress across their faces, shear cracks contribute to shear resistance. This process is called shear transfer or more generally, shear friction. Both experimental and analytical program to investigate shear transfer mechanism in normal and high strength concrete were included in this study. The parameters investigated in push-off test included the concrete strength, the presence and amounts of steel stirrups, and aggregate size. Solution procedure based on the truss model was developed to analyze the shear transfer behavior. In general, it can be seen that the analytical results agree well with results of shear transfer test.

In these days, high-strength steel prevails throughout the construction fields for the benefit of structural and economical aspects. But high-strength steel is used by the simple calculation of flexural capacities for the purpose of reducing flexural reinforcement. So, this paper is mainly focused on the shear behavior of high-strength steel reinforced concrete beams without stirrups comparing with normal-strength steel reinforced concrete beams. Specimens were made and tested with the experimental parameters, such as steel yield strength, reinforcement ratios and minimum shear reinforcement. The main result was that not only area but also the yield strength of flexural reinforcement should be considered to predict the shear capacities of concrete beams.

This Paper Presents a new model, called the “shear-friction truss model,” for slender reinforced concrete beams to derive a clear and simple equation for their ultimate shear strength. In this model, a portion of the shear strength is provided by shear reinforcement as in the traditional truss model, and the remainder by the shear-friction mechanism. Friction resistance is derived considering both geometrical configuration of the rough crack surface and material Properties. The inclined angle of diagonal strut in the traditional truss model is modified to satisfy the state of balanced failure, when both stirrups and longitudinal reinforcement yield simultaneously. The vertical component of friction resistance is added to the modified truss model to form the shear-friction truss model. Test results from published literatures are used to find the effective coefficient of concrete strength in resisting shear on inclined crack surfaces.

It is well known that axial tension decreases the shear strength of RC beams without transverse reinforcement, and axial compression increases the shear resistance. What is perhaps not very well understood is how much the shear capacity is influenced by axial load. RC beams without shear reinforcement subjected to large axial compression and shear may fail in a very brittle manner at the instance of first diagonal cracking. As a result, a conservative approach should be used for such members. According to the ACI Code, the concrete contribution is calculated by effect of axial force and the vertical force in the stirrups calculated by $45^{\circ}$ truss model. This study was performed to examine the effect of axial force in reinforced concrete beams.

An experimental investigation is conducted to examine the behavior and cracking of steel fiberre-inforced concrete spandrel L-shaped beams subjected to combined torsion, bending, and shear. The experimental program includes 12 medium-sized L-shaped spandrel beams organized into two groups, namely, specimens with longitudinal reinforcing bars, and specimens with bars and stirrups. All cases are examined with 0%, 1%, and 1.5% steel fiber volume fractions and tested under two different loading eccentricities. Test results indicate that the torque to shear ratio has a significant effect on the crack pattern developed in the beams. The strain on concrete surface follows the crack width value, and the addition of steel fibers reduces the strain. Fibrous concrete beams exhibited improved overall torsional performance compared with the corresponding non-fibrous control beams, particularly the beams tested under high eccentricity.

This study proposes prediction models for the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and ultra-high-performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPC) beams using a Bayesian parameter estimation approach and a collected experimental database. Previous researchers had already proposed shear strength prediction models for SFRC and UHPC beams, but their performances were limited in terms of their prediction accuracies and the applicability to UHPC beams. Therefore, this study adopted a statistical approach based on a collected database to develop prediction models. In the database, 89 and 37 experimental data for SFRC and UHPC beams without stirrups were collected, respectively, and the proposed equations were developed using the Bayesian parameter estimation approach. The proposed models have a simplified form with important parameters, and in comparison to the existing prediction models, provide unbiased high prediction accuracy.
In this paper, the behavior of interior steel fiber reinforced concrete beam - column joints (BCJs) under cyclic loading is investigated. An experimental program including tests on twelve reinforced concrete (BCJs) specimens under cyclic loading was carried out. The test specimens are divided into two groups having different geometry: group (G1) (symmetrical BCJs specimens) and group (G2) (nonsymmetrical BCJs specimens). The parameters considered in this study are the steel fibers (SFs) content by volume of concrete (Vf), the spacing of shear reinforcement at the joint region, and the area of longitudinal flexural reinforcement. Test results show that the addition of 0.5% SFs with stirrups spacing S=Smax has effectively enhanced the overall performance of BCJs with respect to energy dissipation, ductility ratio, spreading and width of cracks. The failure of specimens is governed mainly by the formation of a plastic hinge at the face column and outside the beam-column junction. Secondary shear cracks were also observed in the beam-column junctions.

The influence of reinforcement buckling on the flexural response of reinforced concrete members is studied. The stress-strain response of compression reinforcement is determined computationally using a large-strain finite element model for bars of varied diameter, length, and initial eccentricity, and a mathematical expression is fitted to the simulation results. This relationship is used to represent the response of bars in compression in a moment-curvature analysis of a reinforced concrete cross section. The compression bar may carry more or less force than a tension bar at a corresponding strain, depending on the relative influence of Poisson effects and bar slenderness. Several cross-section analyses indicate that, for the distances between stirrups prescribed in modern concrete codes, the influence of inelastic buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement on the monotonic moment capacity is very small and can be neglected in many circumstances.
This paper presents the results of an investigation on shear strengthening of RC beams externally reinforced with CFRP composite. A total of six full-scale beams of four CFRP strengthened and two unstrengthened were tested in the absence of internal stirrups in the shear span. The strengthening configurations contained two styles: discrete uniformly spaced strips and customized wide strips over B-regions. The composite systems provided an increase in ultimate strength as compared to the unstrengthened beams. Among the three layouts that had the same area of CFRP, the highest contribution was provided by the customized layout that targeted the B-regions. A comparative study of the experimental results with published empirical equations was conducted in order to evaluate the assumed effective strains. The empirical equations were found to be unconservative. Nonlinear finite element (NLFE) models were developed for the beams. The models agreed with test results that targeting the B-region was more effective than distributing the same CFRP area in a discrete strip style over shear spans. Moreover, the numerical models predicted the contribution of different configurations better than the empirical equations.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of 56 reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The reported results include the behaviour curves, the failure modes and the values of the pre-cracking torsional stiffness, the cracking and ultimate torsional moments and the corresponding twists. The influence of the volume of stirrups, the height to width ratios and the arrangement of longitudinal bars on the torsional behaviour is discussed. In order to describe the entire torsional behaviour of the tested beams, the combination of two different analytical models is used. The prediction of the elastic till the first cracking part is achieved using a smeared crack analysis for plain concrete in torsion, whereas for the description of the post-cracking response the softened truss model is used. A simple modification to the softened truss model to include the effect of confinement is also attempted. Calculated torsional behaviour of the tested beams and 21 beams available in the literature are compared with the experimental ones and a very good agreement is observed.
