  • The rates of absorption of carbon dioxide into aqueous solutions of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) were measured using a semibatch stirred vessel with a plane gas-liquid interface at $25^{\circ}C.$ The absorption rates under the fast reaction regime were analysed using chemical absorption theory. The reaction was found to be first order with respect to both $CO_2$ and the amine.

  • Catalytic slurry reactors, in which a solid maintained in the rom of fine particles suspended in a liquid, are frequently used in chemical and biochemical and industries. In these processes the particle loading is normally low so that the effects of particles on the liquid-film mass transfer coefacent and the gas-liquid interface area are assumed to be negligible. But it is known from the works, amongst others, that the finely powdered activated carbon can increase the gas-liquid mass transfer significantly in surface-aerated reactors. The stirred cell (13.2cm inside diameter) contained four baffles and at the stirring speeds range of 80 ∼ 300ppm, the gas-liquid interfacial area could be considered as that of the cross section of the vessel (that is, 130.1cm2). When the stirrer speeds were increased, the effective interfacial area was slightly higher than the geometric area and was obtained experimentally from the Danckwerts plots. Key Words : gas-liquid interfacial area, Duckwert's Plot stirred dell. mass transfer coefficient.

  • This article has investigated the spatial distribution of the solid particles in polymerization reactors using CFD analysis (FLUENT v. 6.2.1). The suspension of the solids in stirred reactors is affected by a number of parameters including particle diameter, vessel shape, impeller size, impeller speed, and rotating direction of stirrer. The degree of solids suspension in the vessel was quantified with a statistical average value, ${\sigma}^2$. The best stirring conditions were determined based on ${\sigma}^2$, which was found to depend on the vessel bottom shape.

  • The reaction rate of $CO_2$ with 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), MEA monoethanolamine(MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) in aqueous solutions has been determined using a stirred vessel with a plane gas-liquid interface over a wide range of concentrations of amines at different temperatures. The results show that the overall reaction rate is first order with respect to both $CO_2$ and amine. The reaction rate constant varies with temperature according to the relationship which agrees with the experimental data. The proposed interpretation is that the kinetic rate determining step is a reaction of $CO_2$ with amine to form carbamic acid which is then totally and immediately ionized.

  • In the chemical, mineral and electronics industries, mechanically stirred tanks are widely used for complex liquid and particle mixing processes. In order to understand the complex phenomena that occur in such tanks, it is necessary to investigate flow field in the vessel. Most difficulty on the numerical analysis of stirred tank flow field focused particularly on free surface analysis. In order to decrease the dead zone and improve the flow efficiency of a system with free surface, this paper presents a new method that overcomes free surface effects by properly combining the benefits of using experiment and 3-D CFD. This method is applied to study the mixing flow in an agitated tank. From the results of experimental studies using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) system, the distribution of mixing flow including free surface are obtained. And these values that are expressed as a velocity vector field have been patched for simulating the free surface. The results of velocity distribution obtained by 3-D CFD are compared with those of experimental results. The experimental data and the simulation results are in good agreement.

  • The present study is concerned with the flow patterns induced by other impellers in a rectangular tank Impellers are FBT(Flat blade turbine), PBT(Pitched blade turbine), Shroud turbine, Rushton Turbine, and Helical ribbon turbine. The solution of flows in moving reference frames requires the use of 'moving' cell zone. The moving zone approaches are MRF(Multiple reference frame), which is a steady-state approximation and Sliding method, which is a unsteady-state approximation. Numerical results using two moving zone approaches are compared with experiments by Ranade & Joshi, which have done extensive LDA measurements of the flow generated by a standard six-bladed Rushton turbine in a cylindrical baffled vessel. In this paper we simulated the flow patterns with above mentioned moving zone approaches and impellers. Turbulence model is RNG k-$\epsilon$ model.
