Topology optimization of structures seeking the best distribution of mass in a design space to improve the structural performance and reduce the weight of a structure is one of the most comprehensive issues in the field of structural optimization. In addition to structures stiffness as the most common objective function, frequency optimization is of great importance in variety of applications too. In this paper, an efficient multi-objective Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method is developed for topology optimization of frequency and stiffness in continuum structures simultaneously. A software package including a Matlab code and Abaqus FE solver has been created for the numerical implementation of multi-objective BESO utilizing the weighted function method. At the same time, by considering the weaknesses of the optimized structure in single-objective optimizations for stiffness or frequency problems, slight modifications have been done on the numerical algorithm of developed multi-objective BESO in order to overcome challenges due to artificial localized modes, checker boarding and geometrical symmetry constraint during the progressive iterations of optimization. Numerical results show that the proposed Multiobjective BESO method is efficient and optimal solutions can be obtained for continuum structures based on an existent finite element model of the structures.

An effective stiffness, analogous to that of a wound spring, can be created by antagonistic redundant actuation of general closed-chain mechanisms. The qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the effective stiffness are investigated through a Four-bar mechanism, and a load distribution method is introduced which simultaneously guarantees the required system motion and the effective stiffness of the Four-bar mechanism. Furthermore, a simulation is performed to understand the inter-relationship among the effective stiffness, the Four-bar geometry, and the actuation effort. Based on this analysis, the Four-bar synthesis problem for effective stiffness generation is discussed.

The analytical-finite element(FE) squeal model is applied to investigate the squeal propensity associated with contact stiffness of the disc brake system. The system contact stiffness is incorporated into the perturbed equations of motion in the analytical manner where the brake components are modeled by FE method. The results show that the contact stiffness of the friction material and the contact stiffness between the pads and caliper are the influential factors on the squeal propensity. Particularly, the modal instability of the 3200 Hz squeal mode drastically changes with respect to the contact stiffness between the pads and caliper.

Hysteretic behaviors of a seismic isolator are identified by using the regularized output error estimator (OEE) based on the secant stiffness model. A proper regularity condition of tangent stiffness for the current OEE is proposed considering the regularity condition of Duhem hysteretic operator. The proposed regularity condition is defined by 12-norm of the tangent stiffness with respect to time. The secant stiffness model for the OEE is obtained by approximating the tangent stiffness under the proposed regularity condition by the secant stiffness at each time step. A least square method is employed to minimize the difference between the calculated response and measured response for the OEE. The regularity condition of the secant stiffness is utilized to alleviate ill-posedness of the OEE and to yield numerically stable solutions through the regularization technique. An optimal regularization factor determined by geometric mean scheme (GMS) is used to yield appropriate regularization effects on the OEE.

This paper intended to propose the optimal outrigger position in tall building. For this purpose, a schematic structure design of 70 stories building was accomplished by using MIDAS-Gen. In this analysis research, the key variables were the stiffness of outrigger, the stiffness of frame, the stiffness of shear wall, the stiffness of exterior column connected in outrigger and the outrigger location in height. With the intention of looking for the optimum location of outrigger system in high-rise building, we investigated the lateral displacement in top floor. The study proposed the new method to predict the optimal location of outrigger system considering the frame stiffness. And it is verified that the paper results can be helpful in providing the important engineering materials for finding out the optimum outrigger position in tall building.

To analyzing the validity for using the stiffness ratio in evaluating edge stiffness effect of the composite girder bridges, modification factors are analyzed with changing girder spacing. The relation between stiffness ratio, loading type, girder spacing and modification factors is analyzed. From the results of comparing modification factors analyzed from the field loading test and the established design method with the modification factor analyzed from this study, it was concluded that evaluating the edge stiffness effect using stiffness ratio is possible.
This paper describes the process of analyzing vehicle stiffness in terms of frequency band in order to improve vehicle handling. Vehicle handling and ride comfort are highly related to the systems such as suspension, seat, steering, and the car body design. In existing analytical processes, the resonance frequency of a car body is designed to be greater than 25 Hz in order to increase the stiffness of the body against idle vibration. This paper introduces a method for using a band with a frequency lower than 20 Hz to analyze how stiffness affects vehicle handling. Accordingly, static stiffness analysis of a 1g cornering force was conducted to minimize the deformation of vehicle components derived from a load on parts attached to the suspension. In addition, this technology is capable of achieving better performance than older technology. Analysis of how body attachment stiffness affects the dynamic stiffness of a bushing in the attachment parts of the suspension is expected to lead to improvements with respect to vehicle handling and road noise. The process of developing a car body with a high degree of stiffness, which was accomplished in the preliminary stage of this study, confirms the possibility of improving the stability performance and of designing a lightweight prototype car. These improvements can reduce the time needed to develop better vehicles.
An advanced model for the linear flutter analysis is introduced in this paper. Higher-order beam structural models are developed by using the Carrera Unified Formulation, which allows for the straightforward implementation of arbitrarily rich displacement fields without the need of a-priori kinematic assumptions. The strong form of the principle of virtual displacements is used to obtain the equations of motion and the natural boundary conditions for beams in free vibration. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is then developed by relating the amplitudes of harmonically varying loads to those of the responses. The resulting dynamic stiffness matrix is used with particular reference to the Wittrick-Williams algorithm to carry out free vibration analyses. According to the doublet lattice method, the natural mode shapes are subsequently used as generalized motions for the generation of the unsteady aerodynamic generalized forces. Finally, the g-method is used to conduct flutter analyses of both isotropic and laminated composite lifting surfaces. The obtained results perfectly match those from 1D and 2D finite elements and those from experimental analyses. It can be stated that refined beam models are compulsory to deal with the flutter analysis of wing models whereas classical and lower-order models (up to the second-order) are not able to detect those flutter conditions that are characterized by bending-torsion couplings.
To satisfy the requirement of magnetically suspended control moment gyroscope (MSCMG) that magnetic bearing can provide torque, a novel 4DOF hybrid magnetic bearing (HMB) with integrated structure was designed. Mathematical models of forces and torques are established by using equivalent magnetic circuit method. The current stiffness, displacement stiffness, tilting current stiffness and angular stiffness of the 4DOF hybrid magnetic bearing are derived by the mathematical models. Equivalent magnetic circuit method and finite element method (FEM) simulation results indicate that the force has a good linear relationship with both displacement and current, and the torque has a good linear relationship with angular displacement and current. The novel 4DOF HMB is capable of achieving control in both two radial translational degrees of freedom (DOF) and also two radial rotational DOFs. The 4DOF HMB is well adapted to MSCMG system, exhibiting advantages in the controllable DOF, light weight and easy to control.

This paper investigates the dynamics of a HDD spindle system due to the change of FDBs. Flying height of the HDD spindle system is determined through the static analysis of the FDBs, and the stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated through the dynamic analysis of the FDBs. Free vibration characteristics and shock response of the HDD spindle system are analyzed by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. Experimental modal test is also performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. This research shows that the stiffness coefficients of journal heating mostly affect the rocking frequencies because their magnitude are within the range of the stiffness of supporting structure. It also shows that the damping coefficients of thrust bearing mostly affect the axial frequency because the stiffness of thrust bearing is much smaller that that of supporting structure.
