Pseudo-dynamic test of the steel frame - Shear wall with prefabricated floor structure

  • Seismic behavior of new composite structural system with a fabricated floor was studied. A two-bay and three-story structural model with the scale ratio of 1/4 was consequently designed. Based on the proposed model, multiple factors including energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation and deformation performance were analyzed through equivalent single degree of freedom pseudo-dynamic test with different earthquake levels. The results show that, structural integrity as well as the effective transmission of the horizontal force can be ensured by additional X bracing at the bottom of the rigidity of the floor without concrete topping. It is proved that the cast-in-place floor in areas with high seismic intensity can be replaced by the prefabricated floor without pouring surface layer. The results provide a reliable theoretical basis for the seismic design of the similar structural systems in engineering application.

Performance comparison of shear walls with openings designed using elastic stress and genetic evolutionary structural optimization methods

  • Shear walls are a typical member under a complex stress state and have complicated mechanical properties and failure modes. The separated-elements model Genetic Evolutionary Structural Optimization (GESO), which is a combination of an elastic-plastic stress method and an optimization method, has been introduced in the literature for designing such members. Although the separated-elements model GESO method is well recognized due to its stability, feasibility, and economy, its adequacy has not been experimentally verified. This paper seeks to validate the adequacy of the separated-elements model GESO method against experimental data and demonstrate its feasibility and advantages over the traditional elastic stress method. Two types of reinforced concrete shear wall specimens, which had the location of an opening in the middle bottom and the center region, respectively, were utilized for this study. For each type, two specimens were designed using the separated-elements model GESO method and elastic stress method, respectively. All specimens were subjected to a constant vertical load and an incremental lateral load until failure. Test results indicated that the ultimate bearing capacity, failure modes, and main crack types of the shear walls designed using the two methods were similar, but the ductility indexes including the stiffness degradation, deformability, reinforcement yielding, and crack development of the specimens designed using the separated-elements model GESO method were superior to those using the elastic stress method. Additionally, the shear walls designed using the separated-elements model GESO method, had a reinforcement layout which could closely resist the actual critical stress, and thus a reduced amount of steel bars were required for such shear walls.

1:5 축소 10층 벽식 RC 공동주택 모델의 진동대실험 응답에 대한 해석적 모사 (Analytical Simulation of Shake-Table Responses of a 1:5 Scale 10-story Wall-type RC Residential Building Model)

  • 본 논문은 기 수행된 1:5축소 10층 RC 공동주택의 지진모의 실험결과에 비추어 근래 개발된 PERFORM-3D를 이용하여 해석적 모사를 시도하였다. 해석과 실험의 상관관계 분석에 의해 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. (1) 재현주기 50년 지진에 대해 실험과 해석이 매우 유사한 탄성거동을 보였다. 반면 우리나라의 설계지진과 최대지진에 대해서는 비선형 거동을 보이긴 하지만 실험의 최대응답과 강성 및 강도 저하를 제대로 모사하지 못하였다. 이의 주된 이유는 슬라브 거동을 탄성으로 가정하였기 때문이라고 판단된다. (2) 탄성영역 거동에 대해 해석모델이 전체 거동을 비교적 잘 모사하는 반면, 벽체 상호간에 걸친 힘의 분포에 있어서 실험과 상당한 차이를 보여주었다. (3) 최대지진에서 벽체의 전단변형은 비교적 잘 모사한 반면 휨변형의 경우 10배정도 과장되었다. 이는 일부 해석모델에서 인방보를 무시한 결과로 추정된다.

전단스프링과 섬유요소를 이용한 철근콘크리트 전단벽의 비선형 해석모델에 관한 연구 (Nonlinear Modeling of RC Shear Walls Using Fiber and Shear Spring Elements)

  • 철근콘크리트 전단벽을 모델링하기 위해서 섬유요소와 전단스프링을 사용한 모델을 개발하였다. 섬유요소는 전단벽의 휨변형을 나타내며, 전단스프링은 전단변형을 나타낸다. 섬유요소는 단면치수와 비선형 재료성질을 입력하여 모델링되며, 전단스프링은 섬유요소모델과 VecTor2프로그램의 해석 결과로부터 그 변수들을 선정한다. 전단스프링은 전단변형에 의한 강도 강성 감소, 핀칭효과, 그리고 슬립현상을 모사할 수 있는 OpenSees의 Pinching4 모델을 사용하였다. 전단스프링의 변수선정과정은 복잡하고 시간이 오래 걸린다. 따라서 섬유요소모델의 사용성을 검토하기 위해 전단벽의 형상비(H/L), 보의 높이변화, 그리고 보와 전단벽의 강성비 휨강도비를 변수로 하여 전단벽 건물에 동적해석을 수행하였다. 전단벽의 형상비는 섬유요소모델을 사용한 모델과 섬유요소와 전단스프링을 함께 사용한 모델의 층간변위비 오차와 일정한 관계를 가진다. 하지만 보의 높이변화와 강성비 휨강도비 변화에 두 모델의 오차는 일정한 관계를 보이지 않는다.

  • 이 논문에서는 주철근 단락을 갖는 철근콘크리트 교각의 내진성능평가를 위한 비탄성 해석 기법을 제시하였다. 하중의 단계에 따라 수반하게 되는 콘크리트의 균열 및 철근의 항복, 이로 인한 부착효과와 골재의 맞물림 현상 및 강도의 감소 등과 같은 재료적 비선형성을 고려하였다. 이에 대한 콘크리트의 균열모델로서는 분산균열 모델을 사용하였다. 두께가 서로 다른 부재간의 접합부에서 단면강성이 급변하기 때문에 생기는 국소적인 불연속변형을 고려하기 위한 경계면 요소를 도입하였다. 또한, 횡방향 구속철근으로 인한 강도의 증가 효과를 고려하였다. 이 연구에서는 주철근 단락을 갖는 철근콘크리트 교각의 내진성능평가를 위해 제안한 해석기법을 신뢰성 있는 연구자의 실험결과와 비교하여 그 타당성을 검증하였다.

Experimental study of failure mechanisms in elliptic-braced steel frame

  • In this article, for the first time, the seismic behavior of elliptic-braced moment resisting frame (ELBRF) is assessed through a laboratory program and numerical analyses of FEM specifically focused on the development of global- and local-type failure mechanisms. The ELBRF as a new lateral braced system, when installed in the middle bay of the frames in the facade of a building, not only causes no problem to the opening space of the facade, but also improves the structural behavior. Quantitative and qualitative investigations were pursued to find out how elliptic braces would affect the failure mechanism of ELBRF structures exposed to seismic action as a nonlinear process. To this aim, an experimental test of a ½ scale single-story single-bay ELBRF specimen under cyclic quasi-static loading was run and the results were compared with those for X-bracing, knee-bracing, K-bracing, and diamond-bracing systems in a story base model. Nonlinear FEM analyses were carried out to evaluate failure mechanism, yield order of components, distribution of plasticity, degradation of structural nonlinear stiffness, distribution of internal forces, and energy dissipation capacity. The test results indicated that the yield of elliptic braces would delay the failure mode of adjacent elliptic columns and thus, help tolerate a significant nonlinear deformation to the point of ultimate failure. Symmetrical behavior, high energy absorption, appropriate stiffness, and high ductility in comparison with the conventional systems are some of the advantages of the proposed system.

Retrofitted built-up steel angle members for enhancing bearing capacity of latticed towers: Experiment

  • Many existing transmission or communication towers designed several decades ago have undergone nonreversible performance degradation, making it hardly meet the additional requirements from upgrades in wind load design codes and extra services of electricity and communication. Therefore, a new-type non-destructive reinforcement method was proposed to reduce the on-site operation of drilling and welding for improving the quality and efficiency of reinforcement. Six built-up steel angle members were tested under compression to examine the reinforcement performance. Subsequently, the cyclic loading test was conducted on a pair of steel angle tower sub-structures to investigate the reinforcement effect, and a simplified prediction method was finally established for calculating the buckling bearing capacity of those new-type retrofitted built-up steel angles. The results indicates that: no apparent difference exists in the initial stiffness for the built-up specimens compared to the unreinforced steel angles; retrofitting the steel angles by single-bolt clamps can guarantee a relatively reasonable reinforcement effect and is suggested for the reduced additional weight and higher construction efficiency; for the substructure test, the latticed substructure retrofitted by the proposed reinforcement method significantly improves the lateral stiffness, the non-deformability and energy dissipation capacity; moreover, an apparent pinching behavior exists in the hysteretic loops, and there is no obvious yield plateau in the skeleton curves; finally, the accuracy validation result indicates that the proposed theoretical model achieves a reasonable agreement with the test results. Accordingly, this study can provide valuable references for the design and application of the non-destructive upgrading project of steel angle towers.

Quasi-static test of the precast-concrete pile foundation for railway bridge construction

  • Precast concrete elements in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) extends from superstructure to substructure, precast pile foundation has proven a benefit for regions with fragile ecological environment and adverse geological condition. There is still a lack of knowledge of the seismic behavior and performance of the precast pile foundation. In this study, a 1/8 scaled model of precast pile foundation with elevated cap is fabricated for quasi-static test. The failure mechanism and responses of the precast pile-soil interaction system are analyzed. It is shown that damage occurs primarily in precast pile-soil interaction system and the bridge pier keeps elastic state because of its relatively large cross-section designed for railways. The vulnerable part of the precast pile with elevated cap is located at the embedded section, but no plastic hinge forms along the pile depth under cyclic loading. Hysteretic curves show no significant strength degradation but obvious stiffness degradation throughout the loading process. The energy dissipation capacity of the precast pile-soil interaction system is discussed by using index of the equivalent viscous damping ratio. It can be found that the energy dissipation capacity decreases with the increase of loading displacement due to the unyielding pile reinforcements and potential pile uplift. It is expected to promote the use of precast pile foundation in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) of railways designed in seismic regions.

Analytical and experimental exploration of sobol sequence based DoE for response estimation through hybrid simulation and polynomial chaos expansion

  • Hybrid simulation (HS) has attracted community attention in recent years as an efficient and effective experimental technique for structural performance evaluation in size-limited laboratories. Traditional hybrid simulations usually take deterministic properties for their numerical substructures therefore could not account for inherent uncertainties within the engineering structures to provide probabilistic performance assessment. Reliable structural performance evaluation, therefore, calls for stochastic hybrid simulation (SHS) to explicitly account for substructure uncertainties. The experimental design of SHS is explored in this study to account for uncertainties within analytical substructures. Both computational simulation and laboratory experiments are conducted to evaluate the pseudo-random Sobol sequence for the experimental design of SHS. Meta-modeling through polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is established from a computational simulation of a nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to evaluate the influence of nonlinear behavior and ground motions uncertainties. A series of hybrid simulations are further conducted in the laboratory to validate the findings from computational analysis. It is shown that the Sobol sequence provides a good starting point for the experimental design of stochastic hybrid simulation. However, nonlinear structural behavior involving stiffness and strength degradation could significantly increase the number of hybrid simulations to acquire accurate statistical estimation for the structural response of interests. Compared with the statistical moments calculated directly from hybrid simulations in the laboratory, the meta-model through PCE gives more accurate estimation, therefore, providing a more effective way for uncertainty quantification.

실트질 모래지반의 비선형 강도 및 강성도 추정법 (Estimation of Non-linear Strength and Stiffness for Silty Sands)

  • 일반적으로 현장지반은 대부분 일정량의 세립분을 포함하고 있으므로 세립분 함유량을 고려한 지반 거동에 관한 연구가 요구된다. 이와 더불어, 기초 지반은 하중초기단계부터 상당한 비선형 거동특성을 나타내고 있어, 응력단계에 따른 지반의 비선형성 또한 매우 중요한 고려사항이다. 본 연구에서는 일련의 실내시험을 수행하여 지반의 전단강도 및 비선형 감쇠 특성을 도출하고자 하였으며, 수정 Hyerbolic 모델을 적용하여 분석된 실트질 모래 지반의 비선형 거동특성은 실트함유량과 상대밀도에 의해 정량화되었다. 실트질 모래 시료의 응력-변형률 곡선을 도출하기 위해 세립분 함유량을 변화시켜가며 일련의 삼축압축시험이 수행되었다. 또한 비선형 특성의 정규화에 요구되는 미소변형률 구간의 초기전단탄성계수의 도출을 위해서 삼축압축시험의 시료조건과 유사한 시료에 대해 공진주시험이 수행되었다. 또한 실트함유량별로 도출된 비선형 특성치는 상대밀도의 영향이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 상대밀도 증가에 따라 파괴시의 탄성계수의 비인 f값은 감소하고, 지반강성도 감쇠율을 나타내는 9의 경우 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 이와 더불어 비선형 특성치를 상대밀도 $D_R$을 간극비로 환산한 절대적 간극비 $e_{sk}$에 따른 정량화 결과의 경우, $e_{sk}$의 증가에 따라 f값은 증가하고 g값은 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.
