  • The optimal design for stiffened laminated composite cylindrical panels under axial compression was studied using linear and nonlinear deformation theories by finite difference energy methods. Various panel structures was made from Carbon/Epoxy USN125 prepreg and considered 3 types stiffeners. Optimal design analyses of panel structure are carried out by the nonlinear search optimizer, ADS. This optimal design results are compared to the FEM result using ANSYS.

  • The vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with stiffeners is formulated by using the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the successive transmission of stiffness coefficients which are defined as the relationship between the force vector and the displacement vector at an arbitrary nodal line. In order to confirm the validity of the present method, bending vibration analysis for a rectangular plate with stiffener is carried out on a personal computer by using the present method and the finite element method (FEM). Through comparing computational results of the TSCM and the FEM, the effectivness of the TSCM from the viewpoint of computational cost, that is, computational time and storage is demonstrated.

  • The objectiv of this paper is to offer the method of the optimum structural modification by fixing the stiffener on the structure. The vibrational characteristics of a open box type structure are analyzed by the sub-structure synthesis method and sensitivies of each sub-structure are calculated by sensitivity analysis method. The positions to modify are found and the quantities to change are obtained by optimization techniques. As the result, it was found that; (1) The sensitivites of the natural frequency could easily be calculated by the sensitivity analysis method and the optimum position to fix stiffeners could be found. (2) The exact size of stiffeners could be calculated by the optimum structural modification method and the natural frequency could be easily shifted to the objective value. (3) It could be confirmed that the stiffener is a effective tool for accomplishing structural modification.

  • In this paper, the transient response analysis of the trapezoidal corrugated plate subjected to the pulse load is investigated by the theoretical method. Three types of pulse loads are considered: stepped, isosceles triangular and right triangular pulse loads. The corrugated plates can be represented as an orthotropic plate. Both the effective extensional and flexural stiffness of this equivalent orthotropic plate are considered in the analysis. The plate is stiffened by concentric stiffeners perpendicular to the corrugation direction. The stiffening effect is represented by the discrete stiffener theory. This theoretical results are validated by those obtained from 3D finite element analysis based on shell elements. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of stiffened element and edge stiffener in the behaviour and flexural strength of built-up cold-formed steel beams. An experimental and analytical analysis of CFS channel sections in four different geometries is conducted, including simple channel sections, a stiffened channel section with or without edge stiffeners. Nonlinear finite element models are developed using finite element analysis software package ANSYS. The FEA results are verified with the experimental results. Further, the finite element model is used for parametric studies by varying the depth, thickness, and the effect of stiffened element, edge stiffener and their interaction with compression flanges on stiffened built-up cold-formed steel beams with upright edge stiffeners. In addition, the flexural strength predicted by the finite element analysis is compared with the design flexural strength calculated by using the North American Iron and Steel Institute Specifications for cold-formed steel structures (AISI: S100-2007) and suitable suggestion is made.

  • A simple and efficient vibration analysis procedure for stiffened panels with openings and arbitrary boundary conditions based on the assumed mode method is presented. Natural frequencies and modes are determined by solving an eigenvalue problem of a multi-degree-of-freedom system matrix equation derived by using Lagrange's equations of motion, where Mindlin theory is applied for plate and Timoshenko beam theory for stiffeners. The effect of stiffeners on vibration response is taken into account by adding their strain and kinetic energies to the corresponding plate energies whereas the strain and kinetic energies of openings are subtracted from the plate energies. Different stiffened panels with various opening shapes and dispositions for several combinations of boundary conditions are analyzed and the results show good agreement with those obtained by the finite element analysis. Hence, the proposed procedure is especially appropriate for use in the preliminary design stage of stiffened panels with openings.

  • The current trend in shipyard industry is to reduce the weight of ships to support the reduction of CO2 emissions. In this study, the stiffened plate was optimized that is used for building most of the ship-structure. Further, this study proposed the hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique, which combines a genetic algorithm and subsequent optimization methods. The design variables included the number and type of stiffeners, stiffener spacing, and plate thickness. The number and type of stiffeners are discrete design variables that were optimized using the genetic algorithm. The stiffener spacing and plate thickness are continuous design variables that were determined by subsequent optimization. The plate deformation was classified into global and local displacement, resulting in accurate estimations of the maximum displacement. The optimization result showed that the proposed hybrid GA is effective for obtaining optimal solutions, for all the design variables.

  • Elastic and in-elastic buckling stress analyses are executed by the semi-analytical finite strip method to study the effect of the longitudinal stiffener on the web of box girders. The simple analysis procedure is based on the assumption that the vertical stiffeners has the rigidity enough to force nil deflection line on the web panel so that the boundary condition may be regarded as a hinge. The provisions on the longitudinal stiffeners in plate girders of the Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications(1992) are investigated through comparison with the results obtained for various web stiffener size of box girders of the medium span length bridges.

  • Tubular joints are usually reinforced using thicker can section or ring stiffeners to increase the load carrying capacity. In this paper, a numerical study has been performed for evaluation of axial strength for X-joints with internal ring stiffener, The finite element analysis software was used for nonlinear strength analysis. According to variation of ring geometries, the effect of ring stiffener for X-joints are investigated. Internal ring stiffener is found to be efficient improving ultimate strength of tubular joints. Relations of thickness of ring and axial strength are observed considering geometric parameters of ring stiffeners.

  • Cold-formed channel sections are used in a variety of applications in which they are required to absorb deformation energy. This paper investigates the collapse behaviour and energy absorption capability of cold-formed steel channels with flange edge stiffeners under large deformation major-axis bending. The Yield Line Mechanism technique is applied using the energy method, and based upon measured spatial plastic collapse mechanisms from experiments. Analytical solutions for the collapse curve and in-plane rotation capacity are developed, and used to model the large deformation behaviour and energy absorption. The analytical results are shown to compare well with experimental values. Due to the complexities of the yield line model of the collapse mechanism, a simplified procedure to calculate the energy absorbed by channel sections under large bending deformation is developed and also shown to compare well with the experiments.
