Fast Generation of Stereoscopic Virtual Environment Display Using P-buffer

  • This paper is concerned with an efficient generation of stereoscopic views for complex virtual environments by exploiting frame coherence in visibility. The basic idea is to keep visible polygons throughout the rendering process. P-buffer, a buffer of image size, holds the id of the visible polygon for each pixel. This contrasts to the frame buffer and the Z-buffer which hold the color information and the depth information, respectively. For the generation of a consecutive image, the position and the orientation of the visible polygons in the current view are updated according to the viewer's movements, and re-rendered on the current image under the assumption that, when the viewer moves slightly, the visibility of polygons remains unchanged. In the case of stereoscopic views, it may not introduce much difficulty when we render the right(left) image using visible polygons on the (right) image only, The less difference in two images is, the easier the matching becomes in perceiving depth. Some psychophysical experiments have been conducted to support this claim. The computational complexity for generating a fight(left) image from the previous left(right) image is bounded by the size of image space, and accordingly. It is somewhat independent of the complexity of the 3-D scene.

3DTV에서 스테레오 웹 콘텐츠 표현을 위한 CSS3 사양 확장 및 에뮬레이터 연구 (A Study on CSS3 Stylesheet Extension and Emulator for Representation of Stereo Web Content in 3DTV)

  • 본 논문에서는 브라우저 기반의 선언적 콘텐츠 CSS3 스타일시트를 이용하여 HTML5로 작성된 웹 페이지를 3차원 공간에서 3D 스테레오로 표현하기 위해 기존의 CSS 사양을 확장하여 새로운 CSS Stereo 3DTV 프로파일을 제안한다. 먼저, 웹브라우저상의 웹 콘텐츠를 3차원 공간에 효과적으로 재구성할 수 있도록 다양한 웹 페이지 분리 방법을 제시하였다. 디음, 확장한 CSS3 모듈을 이용하여 3D 뷰 볼륨 설정과 분리한 콘텐츠를 뷰 볼륨 내에 배치하는 방법을 제안하였다. 이후, 전처리기에서는 확장 CSS 사양으로 작성된 샘플 콘텐츠를 웹킷 기반 브라우저에서 출력 가능하도록 기존 CSS 코드로 변환한다. 마지막으로 스테레오 이미지 생성을 위한 시스템 렌더링 엔진 에뮬레이터는 웹브라우저상에서 간단히 실행 가능하도록 자바스크립트로 구현되었으며, 자동으로 스테레오 뷰 볼륨을 생성하여 가상의 좌안, 우안 카메라로부터 각각의 영상을 획득한다. 이를 통해 각 샘플 콘텐츠들이 3D 스테레오로 표현된 결과를 확인하였다.

Wake Characteristics of Vane-Type Vortex Generators in a Flat Plate Laminar Boundary Layer

  • Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to identify the wake characteristics downstream of two vane-type vortex generators over laminar flat plate boundary layer. Experimental study was carried out by using the stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. To describe the flow field around the vortex generator in detail, numerical study was performed. We considered two different planform shapes of vortex generator: triangular and rectangular shape. The height of the generator was chosen to be about the boundary layer thickness at the position of its installation. Two different lengths of the generator were chosen: two and five times the height. Wake measurements were carried out at three angles of attack for each configuration. Wake characteristics for each case such as overall vortical structure, vorticity distribution, and location of vortex center with downstream distance were obtained from the PIV data. Wake characteristics, as expected, were found to vary strongly with the geometry and angle of attack so that no general tendency could be deduced. Causes of this irregular tendency were explained by using the results of the numerical simulation.

Relationship between solar flares and halo CMEs using stereoscopic observations

  • To find the relationship between solar flares and halo CMEs using stereoscopic observations, we investigate 182 flare-associated halo CMEs among 306 front-side halo CMEs from 2009 to 2013. We have determined the 3D parameters (radial speed and angular width) of these CMEs by applying StereoCAT to multi-spacecraft data (SOHO and STEREO). For this work, we use flare parameters (peak flux and fluence) taken from GOES X-ray flare list and 2D CME parameters (projected speed, apparent angular width, and kinetic energy) taken from CDAW SOHO LASCO CME catalog. Major results from this study are as follows. First, the relationship between flare peak flux (or fluence) and CME speed is almost same for both 2D and 3D cases. Second, there is a possible correlation between flare fluence and CME width, which is more evident in 3D case than 2D one. Third, the flare fluence is well correlated with CME kinetic energy (CC=0.63). Fourth, there is an upper limit of CME kinetic energy for a given flare fluence (or peak flux). For example, a possible CME kinetic energy ranges from 1030.6 to 1033 erg for a given X1.0 class flare. Our results will be discussed in view of the physical mechanism of solar eruptions.

에지 방향성 히스토그램을 이용한 2차원 동영상의 3차원 입체변환기법 (Stereoscopic Conversion of Monoscopic Video using Edge Direction Histogram)

  • 본 논문에서는 2차원 단안 동영상으로부터 3차원 입체 동영상을 생성하는 기법을 제안한다. 3차원 공간에서 평행한 직선은 2차원 평면의 투시영상에서 먼 거리일수록 간격이 좁아져서 마지막에 한 점에서 만나게 되며, 이 점을 소실점(vanishing point)이라고 정의한다. 관찰자는 관찰자의 시점으로부터 가장 먼 지점인 소실점이라는 깊이 지도 지각 단서를 활용하여 객체와 배경으로부터 관찰자까지의 깊이 정보를 인지한다. 일반적으로 2차원 단안 영상에서의 기하학적 특성을 이용해서 소실점을 추정하고, 소실점의 위치와 관찰자의 시점과의 관계를 이용하여 깊이 정보를 인지할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 일반적인 2차원 단안 영상에서 에지 방향성 히스토그램을 이용하여 소실점의 위치를 추정하고, 소실점의 위치에 따른 깊이지도(depth map)를 생성하는 방법은 제안한다. 실험 결과를 통해서 생성된 깊이지도를 이용하여 안정된 3차원 입체 동영상을 만들 수 있다.

  • Vortexing might occur during draining from tanks which reduces the rate of outflow. This phenomenon has practical relevance in the fuel feed system in space vehicles and rockets. Due to environmental disturbances rotational motion can be generated in the liquid-propellant tank, which in turn can affect the rate of outflow to the engines. The phenomenon is initialized by rotating the fluid In the experimental tank. The dip quickly develops into a vortex with an air core, which extends to the bottom port, reducing the effective cross-sectional area of the drain outlet and consequently the flow rate. Flow characteristics are investigated using SPIV(Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry) method.

Stereoscopic 3D Modelling Approach with KOMPSAT-2 Satellite Data

  • This paper investigates stereo 3D viewing for linear pushbroom satellite images using the Orbit-Attitude Model proposed by Kim (2006) and using OpenGL graphic library in Digital Photogrammetry Workstation. 3D viewing is tested with KOMPSAT-2 satellite stereo images, a large number of GCPs (Ground control points) collected by GPS surveying and orbit-attitude sensor model as a rigorous sensor model. Comparison is carried out by two accuracy measurements: the accuracy of orbit-attitude modeling with bundle adjustment and accuracy analysis of errors in x and y parallaxes. This research result will help to understand the nature of 3D objects for high resolution satellite images, and we will be able to measure accurate 3D object space coordinates in virtual or real 3D environment.

키넥트 깊이 정보와 DSLR을 이용한 스테레오스코픽 비디오 합성 (Stereoscopic Video Compositing with a DSLR and Depth Information by Kinect)

  • 크로마키 방식에 의한 영상 합성은 색상 정보에 의해 전경 후경을 분리하기 때문에 객체 색상의 제약과 특정 스크린이 위치해 있어야 하는 공간의 제약이 있다. 특히 스테레오스코픽 3D 디스플레이를 위한 영상 합성은 크로마키 방식과는 달리 3D 공간에서의 자연스러운 영상 합성이 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 고해상도의 깊이 정보를 이용하여 깊이 키잉(depth keying) 방식에 의한 3D 공간에서의 스테레오스코픽 영상 합성을 제안하였다. 이를 위해 DSLR과 마이크로소프트사 키넥트 센서간의 카메라 캘리브레이션을 통해 고화질의 깊이 정보 획득 후 RGB 정보와의 정합 과정을 통해 3차원 데이터를 획득하였다. 깊이 정보에 의해 배경과 분리 된 객체는 3차원 공간에서의 포인트 클라우드 형태로 표현되어 가상 배경과 합성하였다. 이후 가상의 스테레오 카메라에 의해 Full HD 스테레오스코픽 비디오 합성 영상 획득 결과를 보였다.

APPLYING ALOS PRISM DATA TO RETRIEVE THE ATMPSPHERIC TRANSMITTANCE

  • In this study, a new technique for atmospheric transmittance estimated from ALOS PRISM data is developed. It is based on satellite's observing radiances of different view angles and assumes that the cause of difference in radiances is the different view angles. The ALOS PRISM has three independent optical systems for viewing forward and backward and producing a stereoscopic image along the satellite's track. This stereo pair data can be used to estimate the transmittance according to the radiative transfer theory. This derived transmittance will be validated by the AERONET data and compared with the MODTRAN4 simulation results. Results show that the higher the land cover albedo, the better the derived transmittance compared to the AERONET data. Besides, this technique also shows the transmittance retrieval will be underestimated for the low land cover albedo.

가상현실 표시장치에서의 시간적, 공간적, 회화적 해상도에 따른 가상물체 이동작업의 인간성능 평가 (Human Performance Evaluation of Virtual Object Moving Task in the Different Temporal, Spatial and Pictorial Resolution of a Stereoscopic Display)

  • Most of virtual reality systems ask users to control 3D objects or to navigate 3D world using 3D controllers. To maximize the human performance in the control, the design of virtual reality system and its input and output devices should be optimized. In this study, an experiment was designed to investigate the effects of three resolution factors of a virtual reality system on the human performance. Six subjects conducted the experiment for the factors; two frame rates, three spatial resolutions, and three pictorial contents. The result showed that the greater the spatial resolution was, the higher the human performance was. For the temporal resolution, fixed frame rate at 18 Hz was better than the varied maximized frame rate. For the pictorial contents, the virtual space with orientation cues marked the greatest performance than the other two conditions; the virtual space without any orientation cue and the virtual space like real world. These results could be applied for the design of virtual reality systems.
