Targeted chiral lipidomics analysis of bioactive eicosanoid lipids in cellular systems

  • We have developed a targeted lipidomics approach that makes it possible to directly analyze chiral eicosanoid lipids generated in cellular systems. The eicosanoids, including prostaglandins (PGs), thromboxanes (TXs), leukotrienes (LTs) and alcohols (HETEs), have been implicated as potent lipid mediators of various biological processes. Enzymatic formations of eicosanoids are regioselective and enantioselective, whereas reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated formation proceeds with no stereo-selectivity. To distinguish between enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways of eicosanoid formation, it is necessary to resolve enantiomeric forms as well as regioisomers. High sensitivity is also required to analyze the eicosanoid lipids that are usually present as trace amounts (pM level) in biological fluids. A discovery of liquid chromatography-electron capture atmospheric pressure chemical ionization/mass spectrometry (LC-ECAPCI/MS) allows us to couple normal phase chiral chromatography without loss of sensitivity. Analytical specificity was obtained by the use of collision-induced dissociation (CID) and tandem MS (MS/MS). With combination of stable isotope dilution methodology, complex mixtures of regioisomeric and enantiomeric eicosanoids have been resolved and quantified in biological samples with high sensitivity and specificity. Targeted chiral lipidomics profiles of bioactive eicosanoid lipids obtained from various cell systems and their biological implications have been discussed.

Pan/Tilt스테레오 카메라를 이용한 이동 물체의 강건한 시각추적 (Robust 3D visual tracking for moving object using pan/tilt stereo cameras)

  • In most vision applications, we are frequently confronted with determining the position of object continuously. Generally, intertwined processes ire needed for target tracking, composed with tracking and control process. Each of these processes can be studied independently. In case of actual implementation we must consider the interaction between them to achieve robust performance. In this paper, the robust real time visual tracking in complex background is considered. A common approach to increase robustness of a tracking system is to use known geometric models (CAD model etc.) or to attach the marker. In case an object has arbitrary shape or it is difficult to attach the marker to object, we present a method to track the target easily as we set up the color and shape for a part of object previously. Robust detection can be achieved by integrating voting-based visual cues. Kalman filter is used to estimate the motion of moving object in 3D space, and this algorithm is tested in a pan/tilt robot system. Experimental results show that fusion of cues and motion estimation in a tracking system has a robust performance.

Efficient Hardware Implementation of Real-time Rectification using Adaptively Compressed LUT

  • Rectification is used as a preprocessing to reduce the computation complexity of disparity estimation. However, rectification also requires a complex computation. To minimize the computing complexity, rectification using a lookup-table (R-LUT) has been introduced. However, since, the R-LUT consumes large amount of memory, rectification with compressed LUT (R-CLUT) has been introduced. However, the more we reduce the memory consumption, the more we need decoding overhead. Therefore, we need to attain an acceptable trade-off between the size of LUT and decoding overhead. In this paper, we present such a trade-off by adaptively combining simple coding methods, such as differential coding, modified run-length coding (MRLE), and Huffman coding. Differential coding is applied to transform coordinate data into a differential form in order to further improve the coding efficiency along with Huffman coding for better stability and MRLE for better performance. Our experimental results verified that our coding scheme yields high performance with maintaining robustness. Our method showed about ranging from 1 % to 16 % lower average inverse of compression ratio than the existing methods. Moreover, we maintained low latency with tolerable hardware overhead for real-time implementation.

스테레오 동영상에서 스네이크 포인트 수의 최적화를 이용한 객체 윤곽 추적 알고리즘 (Object Contour Tracking Using Optimization of the Number of Snake Points in Stereoscopic Images)

  • 본 논문은 스테레오 동영상에서 스네이크를 이용해 객체 윤곽을 추적하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법은 스테레오 동영상에서 얻을 수 있는 변이 정보를 이용해 복잡한 배경을 제거하고, 객체의 윤곽에서 곡률이 심한 곳에는 부족한 스네이크 포인트를 추가하고 그렇지 않은 곳은 잉여 스네이크 포인트를 제거하여 윤곽을 잘 검출하도록 하였다. 제안한 방법은 객체의 오목한 윤곽 부분에서 스네이크 포인트 수 부족으로 인해 정확한 윤곽을 검출하기 힘들었던 문제를 해결할 수 있었고 복잡한 배경을 갖는 영상에서도 동작이 잘 되었다. 또한 폐색구간에서도 객체의 영역 변화에 따라 스네이크 포인트를 최적화하며 추적하였다. 제안한 방법은 실험을 통해 그 성능을 확인하였다.

Direct Examination of the Dietary Preference of the Copepod Calanus helgolandicus Using the Colorimetric Approach

  • The food selectivity of tethered females of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus was examined by using the colorimetric approach. First, feeding behavior of the copepod did not show any differences between the red-color stained with neutral red and non-stained diets using the diatom Coscinodiscus curvatulus. Then, the copepods were fed a mixtures of two diets, the diatom C. curvatulus, stained with neutral red, and the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sanguineum for $14\sim60$ minutes of feeding duration. The foregut colors of females were examined using a stereo-microscope and a video monitor. The foreguts of animals fed with a high density of diatoms in mixed diets showed a dark red color, whereas those fed with a high density of dinoflagellate in mixed diets were a dark yellow. The results suggest that this species of copepod may not selectively feed either one of the diets used for this study. Their feeding activity may be more likely related to the density of available prey in their environment. Therefore, this quick and easy colorimetric approach could provide very useful information, like the pre-screening procedure before designing and conducting the time-consuming and complex feeding experiments to understand the feeding ecology of copepods.

졸겔공정을 이용한 $Bi_{4-x}Sm_xTi_3O_{12}(0<\leqx\geq2)$ 박막제조 및 특성평가 (Preparation and Characterization of $Bi_{4-x}Sm_xTi_3O_{12}(0<\leqx\geq2)$ Thin Films Using Sol-Gel Processing)

  • Thin films of Bi4-xSmxTi3O12(0$\leq$x$\leq$2) were prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) at $700^{\circ}C$ using spin-coating with sols derived from Bi-Sm-Ti complex alkoxides. From X-ray diffraction analysis, it was observed that Sm-substituted phases resembled ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 in structure. Variations of their lattice parameters depending on the amount of Sm-substitution showed that an anomalous structural distortion might exist at x=1. The grain sizes of the thin films decreased from 0.115 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 0.078${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with increasing the amount of Sm-substitution. The dielectric constants and the remanent polarizations of the thin films decreased with increasing the amount of the Sm-substitution, which were related to decrease of the stereo-active Bi3+ ion contributing to polarization. However, these values were exceptionally high at x=1, compared to those of the other substituted phases. Such an anomaly suggests that the phase of x=1 has 1:1 chemical ordering between Sm and Bi in structure. The thin films of all compositions except x=2 showed ferroelectricity. The thin film of x=2 was paraelectric, whose grains were too fine to exhibit ferroelectricity.

  • 스테레오 채널 오디오 재생 시스템에서 사용되는 간섭제거기 (crosstalk canceller)는 원치 않는 crosstalk을 제거함으로써, 청취자의 귀 주변에서 녹음된 원음장을 완벽하게 재생하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그러나, 일반적으로 crosstalk 제거기는 물리적인 한계로 저주파 대역에서 나쁜 성능을 갖게 된다. 이를 개선하기 위한 방법으로 주파수를 warping하여 저주파 대역의 해상도를 높여 보다 효율적으로 필터를 설계하는 기술이 있으나, 많은 연산량을 필요로 한다. 본 논문에서는 이를 보다 효율적으로 구현하기 위해 pole-zero dewarping을 이용하여 필터를 구성하는 기술을 제안하였다. 이 기술을 통하여 구현된 crosstalk 제거기는 종래의 warping 기술로 구현된 crosstalk 제거기에 대하여 적은 연산량으로 유사한 성능을 제공하였으며, 모의 실험을 통하여 이를 검증하였다.

CAD 형상 데이터를 이용한 비정렬 표면 격자계의 자동 생성 기법 (AUTOMATIC GENERATION OF UNSTRUCTURED SURFACE GRID SYSTEM USING CAD SURFACE DATA)

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach is now playing an important role in the engineering process in these days. Generating proper grid system in time for the region of interest is prerequisite for the efficient numerical calculation of flow physics using CFD approach. Grid generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine and successful application of numerical approaches in the engineering process. CFD approach based on the unstructured grid system is gaining popularity due to its simplicity and efficiency for generating grid system compared to the structured grid approaches, especially for complex geometries. In this paper an automated triangular surface grid generation using CAD(Computer Aided Design) surface data is proposed. According to the present method, the CAD surface data imported in the STL(Stereo-lithography) format is processed to identify feature edges defining the topology and geometry of the surface shape first. When the feature edges are identified, node points along the edges are distributed. The initial fronts which connect those feature edge nodes are constructed and then they are advanced along the CAD surface data inward until the surface is fully covered by triangular surface grid cells using Advancing Front Method. It is found that this approach can be implemented in an automated way successfully saving man-hours and reducing human-errors in generating triangular surface grid system.

CME-CME Interaction near the Earth

  • In coronagraph images, it is often observed that two successive CMEs merge into one another and form complex structures. This phenomenon, so called CME cannibalism caused by the differences in ejecting times and propagating velocities, can significantly degrade forecast capability of space weather, especially if it occur near the Earth. Regarding this, we attempt to analyze the cases that two CMEs are expecting to meet around 1 AU based on their arrival times. For this, we select 13 CME-CME pairs detected by ACE, Wind and/or STEREO-A/B. We find that 8 CME-CME pairs show a shock structure, which means they already met and became one structure. Meanwhile 5 pairs clearly show magnetic holes between two respective shock structures. Based on detailed investigation for each pair and statistical analysis for all events, we can get clues for following questions: 1) How does the solar wind structure change when they are merging? 2) Are there any systematic characteristics of merging process according to the CME properties? 3) Is the merging process associated with the occurrence of energetic storm particles? 4) What causes errors in calculating CME arrival times? Our results and discussions can be helpful to understand energetic phenomena not only close to the Sun but also near the Earth.

멀티채널 3차원 마이크를 이용한 입체음향 처리 기술 (Spatial Audio Signal Processing Technology Using Multi-Channel 3D Microphone)

  • 입체음향 시스템의 목적은 청취자에게 음원을 획득한 장소에 있는 것과 같은 느낌을 주는 것이다. 이를 위해 일반적으로 더미헤드가 많이 사용되고 있다. 인간의 머리형태를 한 더미헤드의 특성 때문에 더미헤드를 통해 획득한 음원을 헤드폰을 통해 청취하는 경우 현장감을 느낄 수 있다. 하지만 더미헤드의 형태 및 크기는 공공장소에서 사용하기에는 제약이 있고 더미헤드를 통해 획득한 신호는 멀티채널로 확장하기가 어렵기 때문에 본 논문에서는 이러한 더미헤드를 구체로 간략화 한 후 구체 위에 다수 개의 마이크를 배치하여 입체음원을 획득하기 위한 멀티채널 3차원 마이크 기술에 대해 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 멀티채널 3차원 마이크는 구체 위의 수평면 상에 5개의 마이크를 배치하여 입체 음원을 획득한 다음 후처리 과정을 통해 헤드폰, 스테레오, 스테레오 다이폴, 4채널 및 5채널 재생환경 등에서 재생이 가능하다. 다양한 재생신호의 생성을 위한 후처리 과정은 많은 연산량을 필요로 하기 때문에, H/W로 제작하였다. 멀티채널 3차원 마이크의 성능을 검증하기 위해 방향성 실험을 수행한 결과, 멀티채널 재생환경에서 더미헤드 기술의 단점인 전/후방 혼동현상을 현저하게 줄일 수 있었다.
