  • Paulownia tomentosa is one of fast-growing wood species in Korea. In order to evaluate the solid bioenergy properties of Paulownia tree, this study examined the heating value, moisture content (MC), pH and proximate analysis of stem, branch, root, bark and leaf. The heating values of wood parts were slightly higher than those of bark and leaf, and that of branch was the highest among all the samples. The higher moisture content of bark and leaf referred to their lower heating value. Also, the pH of stem, branch and root was similar and lower than those of bark and leaf. The ash content of bark and leaf was much higher than that of wood parts, which is the one of the reasons for effect on the lower heating value and higher pH. While, the volatile matter content (VMC) of bark and leaf was lower than those of wood parts. The bark showed the highest fixed carbon content (FCC), while the FCC of stem was the lowest among all the samples. The obtained results are encouraging that the Paulownia tree could be totally utilized as alternative fuels for bioenergy production.

  • Correlations between various morphological characteristics of Panax quinquefolium plants grown in Lytton, British Columbia, Canada were assessed for 1-through 4-year old plants. Root dry weight, the dependent variable, was found to be strongly related to leaf dry weight, leaf length and root length for 1-and 2-year old plants during the middle of the growing season. For 1- and 2-year old plants at the end of the growing season, root dry weight was found to be related to leaf dry weight, leaf length and stem dry weight. For 3 and 4-year old plants, root dry weight was found to be related to leaf dry weight, leaf length and stem dry weight. For 3- and 4-year old plants, root dry weight was found to be related to leaf dry weight. For practical considerations, this latter relationship provides a simple method for selecting superior plants from which seed can be harvested.

  • Consumers are more aware of their health and more conscious of environmental conditions nowadays. As such, there is an increasing demand for agri-foods obtained from organic agricultural practices. The present study aims to compare quality characteristics and antioxidant activities between organically and conventionally grown perilla leaf, leaf lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage. The conventionally grown leafy and stem vegetables showed significantly (p<0.05) higher weights and lengths. There was no significant difference in moisture contents of organically and conventionally grown vegetables. The L (lightness), a (redness), and b (yellowness) values of organically and conventionally grown perilla leaf, leaf lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage showed significant differences (p<0.05). Conventionally grown perilla leaf, leaf lettuce, and broccoli showed significantly (p<0.05) higher DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. Overall, the quality characteristics of conventionally grown leafy and stem vegetables were higher than those of organically grown ones. On the other hand, antioxidant activities of organically grown leafy and stem vegetables were higher than those of conventionally grown ones. Further studies are recommended to evaluate other differences such as flavor, organic acid, polyphenol, vitamin, mineral, and bioactivity compounds between organically and conventionally grown vegetables.

  • This study are conducted to observe the correlation which are concerned with tile internode length to the leaf area and leaf weight. Where as, small leaf variety Gae Ryang Su Ban, and large leaf variety Ro Sang are adopted to observe their correlations in a group consisting of 30 varieties and in identifiable varieties. The results are as follows: A. Such positive correlations are observed between each characteristics and leaf area with leaf weight. (1) There are highly positive correlation between internode length and leaf area with leaf weight together within varieties group. (2) No correlation with stem length is observed, but high correlation is acknowledged in identifiable varieties although positive correlations are recognized. (3) Correlations are showed between stem volume and leaf area with leaf weight in identifiable varieties, especially Gae Ryang Su Ban higher than any other varieties. (4) Petiole length is not correlated to leaf area and leaf weight in varieties group, but petiole weight is highly correlated to leaf area and leaf weight in varieties group, Gae Ryang Su Ban and Ro Sang variety. B. Internode length along with the stem parts shows the same tendency of variance as most varieties do; internode length of I part at the base is the longest one, gradually shrunk to that of III part and gloved longer, and again internode length becomes shorter to the top. C. Variance of leaf area and leaf weight along with the parts are the lowest ones at the I part, gradually increased to the maximum at IV part, and here after it comes to shrink.

  • Q. mongolica and Q. dentata are representative species of deciduous forest communities in Korea and are known to be relatively resistant to soil drying condition among Korean oaks. This study attempted to elucidate the degree of competition and ecological niche characteristics of the two species by comparing the ecological responses of the two species according to soil moisture. Competition between Q. mongolica and Q. dentata was shown to be more intense under the conditions where moisture content was low than under the conditions where moisture content was high. As for the ecological niche overlaps of the two species for soil moisture, the structural traits of plant such as stem diameter overlapped the most, the traits of biomass such as petiole weight overlapped the least, and photosynthetic organ-related traits such as leaf width and length overlapped intermediately. When looking at the competition for soil moisture between the two species, it can be seen that Q. mongolica won in nine traits (leaf width length, leaf lamina length, leaf lamina weight, leaf petiole weight, leaf area, leaves weight, shoot weight, root weight, and plant weight) and Q. dentata won in the remaining seven traits (leaf petiole length, leaves number, stem length, stem diameter, stem weight, shoot length, and root length). Competition between the two species for the moisture environment of the soil was shown to be intense under the conditions where moisture content was low. The degree of competition between Q. dentata and Q. mongolica for soil moisture is high under the conditions where soil moisture content is low, and it is judged that Q. mongolica is more competitive for soil moisture than Q. dentata.

  • A study was conducted on four maize cultivars to determine the dry matter and fibre digestibility as influenced by advancing plant age. Samples of maize cultivars Akbar, Neelum, UM-81 and IZ-31 were harvested at weekly intervals/ growth stages. The samples of morphological fractions such as leaf and stem were also collected at various growth stages. Whole mixed fodder and different fractions of maize plant were analysed for their chemical composition and in vitro digestibility. The results showed that in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of whole maize plant, leaf and stem decreased significantly with advancing stage of maturity. Digestibility of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose and cellulose decreased significantly in all plant parts with advancing plant age/growth stages. Maximum values for the digestibility of dry matter and various cell wall constituents were observed in leaf, followed by whole plant and stem fractions. Cultivars were observed to have significant effect of IVDMD and digestibility of NDF, ADF and cellulose in all plant fractions. The results indicated that digestibility of maize fodder was affected by stage of maturity and cultivars. However, maturity had a greater effect on digestibility in all plant fractions than did cultivars. Dry matter contents were found to be significantly and negatively correlated with IVDMD of whole plant and its leaf and stem fractions. Based on correlations, regression equations were computed to predict IVDMD.
