  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficiency of stcclmaldng slag and sludge in removing metals existing in wastewater or leachate. Laboratory experiments were performed as a function of initial concentration of metals. pH a and temperature of the background solution and the presence of che1ating agent, EDTA. The test conditions were temperatures r ranging from $25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$; initial concentrations varying from 5mg/L to 50 mg/L; pH between 3 and 11; and Cu. Cd‘ and Pb a as adsorbates. The results of tests showed that overall rates of metals removal were 20~30% at pH 3 and greater than 90% at p pH 7 and 11. Metals were removed from the solution predominantly via adsorption in acidic conditions, and the combined e effects of adsorption and precipitation in neutral and alkaline conditions. In view of the test results and other engineering c characteristics of steelmaking slag and sludg$\xi$, these industrial by-products from steel industry have a high potential to be used l in wastewater treatment and are particularly beneficial when used as landfill liner additives due to thelJ ability to remove heavy m metals from leachate.

Characteristics of Direct Aqueous Carbonation Reaction Using Incinerated Ash and Industrial By-Products (소각재 및 산업부산물을 이용한 직접 수성탄산화 반응 특성)

  • In order to better understand carbon dioxide recycling, the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of six different alkaline industrial by-products, including incineration ash, desulfurized gypsum, low-grade quicklime, and steelmaking slag were investigated using a laboratory-scale direct aqueous carbonation reactor. In addition to the dissolution characteristics of each sample, the main reaction structure was confirmed through thermogravimetric analysis before and after the reaction, and the reactive CaO content was also defined through thermogravimetric analysis. The carbon dioxide capture capacity and efficiency of quicklime were determined to be 473 g/kg and 86.9%, respectively, and desulfurized gypsum and incineration ash were also evaluated to be relatively high at 51.1 to 131.7 g/kg and 51.2 to 87.7%, respectively. On the other hand, the capture efficiency of steelmaking slag was found to be less than 10% due to the influence of the production and post-cooling conditions. Therefore, in order to apply the carbonation process to steelmaking slag, it is necessary to optimize the slag production conditions. Through this study, it was confirmed that the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of incineration ash, quicklime, and desulfurized gypsum are at levels suitable for carbonation processes. Furthermore, this study was able to secure basic data for resource development technology that utilize carbon dioxide conversion to produce calcium carbonate for construction materials.

  • POSCO has been developed a general purpose dynamic simulator of the hot strip steel mill. The simulator is a tool for developing the process control system in an industrial system solution business, by making the most use of control and simulation techniques fostered in steelmaking business. This simulator has, not only a powerful numerical analysis function, but an easy-to-use graphic user interface which readily enables to simulate dynamic system. This paper presents the features of the simulator and steel rolling process simulator as its application.

  • Silica bricks had been in arc-furnace roofs of various sizes and steelmaking practices. The resulting materials were examined with reference to mineral and chemical changes. Silica bricks develope definite zones while in service. These zones represent a concentration gradient through the brick that results from the thermal gradient across the brick and from the furnace atmosphere. There are major brick losses by spalling as well as by melting of the hot-face surface in an iron-oxide rich liquid.

  • Refractory industry in technologically advanced countries has long been on gradual decline due to leveled-off steel production and decreasing unit consumption of refractories for steel. Notable technological achievements by refractory industry that contributed significantly to steel production are briefly reviewed covering from blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace to continuous casting. Future possibility to revitalize the refractory industry is discussed on the basis of the review, taking into account opportunities available in environment and energy related sector of industries.

  • Recent issues in the automotive industries are, improvement of fuel efficiency according to the worldwide $CO_2$ regulation, passenger safety through enhanced crashworthiness, superior design and cost reduction due to price fluctuation of raw material. To meet these demands, steelmaking companies are developing advanced high strength steel and new process technologies such as hydroforming, TWB(Tailor Welded Blank), hot stamping and so on. In addition, eco-friendly and high corrosion resistant coating technologies are getting more attention to comply with the environmental regulations. In this paper, reviews and prospects of recent coating technologies for automotive use are presented.

A study of the replacement of desulphurization slag for sand to ready-mixed soil materials (RMSM)

  • After the industrial of steelmaking by-products are processed properly, they can be used in civil engineering, not only as a substitute for natural resources and to reduce costs, but also to provide environmental protection. This study used different amounts (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%,and 50%) of desulphurization slag to replace natural fine aggregates in ready-mixed soil materials, and tested the physical and fresh properties (slump, slump flow, tube flow, initial setting time, and bleeding) and hardened properties (compressive strength, ball drop, ultrasonic pulse velocity) of the materials. The variations between the performances of the materials with different mix proportions were discussed. When desulphurization slag is used in RMSM, the workability can be enhanced obviously significantly. When the replacement of desulphurization slag is 50%, the slump flow is increased by 110mm compared with the control group, and the initial setting time increases as the replacement increases, because of bleeding. When the replacement is 10% and 20%, the compressive strength at various ages is higher than that of the control group. When the replacement is 10%, the compressive strength at 7 days is higher than that of the control group by 60%, and the ultrasonic pulse velocity is proportional to the compressive strength, which increases with age and decrease as the replacement increases. An appropriate replacement can effectively accelerate construction, and allow projects to be finished ahead of schedule; therefore, an appropriate replacement, is applicable for ready-mixed soil materials.

A Study on the Reduction of Iron Oxide from Slag in the EAF Process (전기로 공정에서 슬래그 중 산화철의 환원 회수에 관한 연구)

  • EAF processed slag which contains about 20 ~ 35 weight percent FetO is poured to slag pot and cooled. If we recover Fe from molten slag by the reduction, we will improve steel yield rate and reduce slag quantity poured from the furnace. Usually, carbon is used as a reductant and slag foaming agent in the EAF process. In this experiment, after melt the metal in induction furnace and then add slag with carbon and Al dross powder as a reductant, we investigated the reduction of FetO from slag and change of Phophorus content. As the result, when we use Al dross as a reductant, recovery rate is two times more than carbon. Phosphorus pick up is less than 50ppm with reduction of EAF slag.

Development of High-Speed Width-Changing Pattern in Continuous Caster (연속주조기의 몰드 폭 변경 패턴 개발)

  • Four patterns for width adjustment were studied with an aim to increase the width-adjustment speed in continuous casting. The main goals are to minimize the actuating force of a WAM actuator, to develop a deformation analysis model of a solidified shell in the mold, and to induce the main limit factor for the speedup of width adjustment. On the basis of the width-adjustment experiment, the notable features of four patterns types were considered, and we compared the corresponding actuating forces. For comparing the driving forces of the patterns, during the experiment, the same casting speed was maintained for each pattern. To optimize the parameter of the deformation analysis model of the solidified shell, the experiment results were applied to them. To speed up width adjustment and to reduce the driving force, we controlled the pattern parameters. The most effective pattern was the fast-mode pattern, and the taper was the main parameter that helped reduce the driving forces during the motion of the actuator.
