The use of advanced composite materials in strengthening and repair of existing structures is increasing rapidly. One specific area in which the technique has been introduced lately is the strengthening of metallic structures with bonded carbon-fibre laminates. In this paper, the behaviors of composite steel-CFRP members is studied experimentally. A new type of test specimen has been developed for this purpose. By examining different combination of CFRP-laminates and adhesives, different types of fracture mode could be examined. The tested composite elements also displayed different behavior and a large difference in strength and ductility could be observed.

In this paper, the effects of temperature change (low and high temperature) on the impact damages of CFRP laminates was experimentally studied. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/epoxy orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^{\circ}\;_6/90^{\circ}\;_6]s$ and $[0^{\circ}\;_4/90^{\circ}\;_4]s$. And CF/PEEK orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces $[0^{\circ}\;_4/90^{\circ}\;_4]s$. And, this study aims experimentally to present the interrelations between the impact energy vs. impact damages (i.e. delamination area and matrix crack) of CFRP laminates (CF/epoxy, CF/PEEK) subjected to FOD(foreign object damage) under low and high temperatures. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages.

The behavior of shear deficient under-balanced reinforced concrete beams with rectangular cross-sections, which were externally strengthened with CFRP composite along shear spans, was experimentally investigated under vertical load. One of the specimens represents a reference beam without CFRP strengthening and the other specimens have different width/strip spacing ratios (wf/sf). The optimum strip in terms of wf/sf, which will bring the beam behavior to the ideal level in terms of strength and ductility, was determined according to the regulations. When the wf/sf ratio exceeds 0.55, the behavior of the beam shifted from shear failure to bending failure. However, it has been observed that the wf/sf ratio should be increased up to 0.82 in order for the beam to reach sufficient shear reserve value according to the codes. It is also observed that the direction and weight of the CFRP composite are one of the most critical factors and 240 gr/m2 CFRP strips experienced sudden ruptures in the shear span after the cracking of the concrete. It is considered as a deficiency that the empirical shear capacity formulas given for the beams reinforced with CFRP in the regulations do not take into account both direction and weight of CFRP composites.

Elastic modulus, tensile and bond capacities are important factors for developing an effective reinforcing action of a flexural member as a reinforcing material for concrete structures. Reinforcement must have enough bond capacity to prevent the relative slip between concrete and reinforcement. This paper presents an experimental study to clarify the bond capacity of prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) rod manufactured by an automatic assembly robot. The bond characteristics of CFRP rods with different pitch of helical wrapping were analyzed experimentally. As the result, all types of CFRP rods show a high initial stiffness and good ductility. The mechanical properties of helical wrapping of the CFRP rods have an important effect on the bond of these rods to concrete after the bond stress reached the yield point. The stress-slip relationship analyzed from the pull-out test of embedded cables within concrete was linear up to maximum bond capacity. The deformation within the range of maximum force seems very low and was reached after approximately 1 mm. The average bond capacity of CF20, CF30 and CF40 was about 12.06 MPa, 12.68 MPa and 12.30 MPa, respectively. It was found that helical wrapping was sufficient to yield bond strengths comparable to that of steel bars.

Impact behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates were evaluated with tension test and compact tension test. A steel ball launched by an air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damage of relatively low energy. The static tensile and fracture toughness tests were performed to evaluate the residual strength and the AE behavior of impact-damaged laminates. As a results, it was found that the static strength, the fracture toughness and the AE-event count were decreased with increasing of impact velocity and delamination area, and to have a different strength ratio and fracture toughness ratio for each stacking method. And also, it was confirmed that strength and fracture toughness of impact-damaged CFRP laminates could be evaluated and analyzed quantitatively by AE techniques.

In this paper, static and fatigue bending strengths of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates having impact damage(FOD) are evaluated. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/EPOXY and CF/PEEK orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces[${0^0}_4{90^0}_4}$]$_sym$. A steel ball launched by the air gun colides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages. The damage growth during bending fatigue test is observed by the scanning acoustic microscope(SAM). When the impacted side is compressed, the residual fatigue bending strength of CF/PEEK specimen P is greater that that of CF/EPOXY SPECIMEN B. On the other hand, when the impacted side is in tension, the residual fatigue bending strength of CF/PEEK speicemen P is smaller than that of CF/EPOXY specimen B. In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is proposed from the transverse crack generated near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-b delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.
To upgrade shear performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, and particularly of the segments under negative moment within continuous T-section beams, a series of original schemes has been proposed using carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) U-shaped strips for shear-strengthening. The current work focuses on one of them, in which CFRP U-strips are wound around steel bars against the top of the flange of a T-beam and then spliced on its bottom face in addition to being bonded onto its sides. The test results showed that the proposed scheme successfully provided reliable anchorage for U-strips and prevented premature onset of shear failure due to FRP debonding. The governing shear mode of failure changed from peeling of CFRP to its fracture or crushing of concrete. The strengthened specimens displayed an average increase of about 60% in shear capacity over the unstrengthened control one. The specimen with a relatively high ratio and uniform distribution of CFRP reinforcement had a maximum increase of nearly 75% in strength as well as significantly improved ductility. The formulas by various codes or guidelines exhibited different accuracy in estimating FRP contribution to shear resistance of the segments that are subjected to negative moment and strengthened with well-anchored FRP U-strips within continuous T-beams. Further investigation is necessary to find a suitable approach to predicting load-carrying capacity of continuous beams shear strengthened in this way.
The strengthening and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures with externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates has shown excellent performance and, as a result, this technology is rapidly replacing steel plate bonding techniques. This paper addresses this issue, and presents results deals with the influence of external bonded CFRP-reinforcement on the time-dependent behavior of reinforced concrete beams. A total of eight reinforced concrete beams with cracked and un-cracked section, with and without externally bonded CFRP laminates, were investigated for their creep and shrinkage behavior. All the beams considered in this paper were simply supported and subjected to a uniform sustained loading for the period of six months. The main parameters of this study are two types of sustained load and different degrees of strengthening scheme for both cracked and un-cracked sections of beams. Both analytical and experimental work has been carried out on strengthened beams to investigate the cracking and deflection performance. The applied sustained load was 56% and 38% of the ultimate static capacities of the un-strengthened beams for cracked and un-cracked section respectively. The analytical values based on effective modulus method (EMM) are compared to the experimental results and it is found that the analytical values are in general give conservative estimates of the experimental results. It was concluded that the attachment of CFRP composite laminates has a positive influence on the long term performance of strengthened beams.
Nowadays CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) became widely used materials for the strengthening and retrofitting of structures. Many experimental and analytical studies are encountered at literature about strengthening beams by using this kind of materials against static loads and cyclic loads such as earthquake or wind loading for investigating their behavior. But authors did not found any study about strengthening of RC beams by using CFRP against low velocity impact and investigating their behavior. For these reasons an experimental study is conducted on totally ten strengthened RC beams. Impact loading is applied on to specimens by using an impact loading system that is designed by authors. Investigated parameters were concrete compression strength and drop height. Two different sets of specimens with different concrete compression strength tested under the impact loading that are applied by dropping constant weight hammer from five different heights. The acceleration arises from the impact loading is measured against time. The change of velocity, displacement and energy are calculated for all specimens. The failure modes of the specimens with normal and high concrete compression strength are observed under the loading of constant weight impact hammer that are dropped from different heights. Impact behaviors of beams are positively affected from the strengthening with CFRP. Measured accelerations, the number of drops up to failure and dissipated energy are increased. Finite element analysis that are made by using ABAQUS software is used for the simulation of experiments, and model gave compatible results with experiments.
The use of external carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates is one of the most effective techniques existing for the confinement of circular concrete specimens. Currently, several researches have been made to develop models for predicting the ultimate conditions of this type of confinement. As most of the major existing models were developed based on limited experimental database. This paper presents the development of new confinement ultimate conditions, strength and strain models, for concrete cylinders confined with CFRP composites based on a statistical analysis of a large existing experimental database of 310 cylindrical concrete specimens wrapped with CFRP. The database is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed and major existing strength and strain models. Based on the two different statistical indices, the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), the two proposed confinement ultimate conditions presents a good performance compared to the major existing models except the models of Lam and Teng (2003) and Youssef et al. (2007) which have relatively similar performance to the proposed models.
