  • Intensive technological research on the Dry-bag CIP equipment was carried out to improve the dimensional accuracy and the productivity. The rubber mold design technology using FEM simulation during pressing was introduced, in order to achieve higher dimensional preciseness, and criteria for the selection of the In-line type or Off-line type, were established based on the powder flowability index proposed by Carr. Based on these research results, high productivity Off-line Dry-bag CIP equipment, which can realize good dimensional accuracy with high productivity, was developed even for non-granulated powders with poor packing density.

Dimensionless analysis of composite rectangular and circular RC columns

  • A numerical procedure is presented that provides ultimate curvature and moment domains for composite rectangular and circular cross-sections of reinforced concrete columns with or without an embedded steel section subjected to combined axial loading and biaxial bending. The stress resultants for the concrete and reinforcement bars are calculated using fiber analysis and the stress resultants for the encased structural steel are evaluated using an exact integration of the stress-strain curve over the area of the steel section. A dimensionless formula is proposed that can be used for any section with similar normalized geometric and mechanical parameters. The contribution of each material to the bearing capacity of a section (resistance load and moments) is calculated separately so that the influence of each geometric or mechanical parameter on the bearing capacity can be investigated separately.

  • In Top-down sites, there are many open sections around the tower crane installed on the steel frame. The open section near the tower crane may cause slab cracks and deformation of the steel frame members installed in the open section due to earth pressure. Therefore, in the field, additional consideration during construction of the open section near the tower crane should be considered.

Experimental Study on Pre-Stresses Steel Beam (Pre-stress를 도입한 Steel Beam에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This research was carried out to investigate several mechanical characteristics of pre-stressed steel beams. The configuration of specimens used for this study were as follows; a cover plate having permissible fiber stress of 4,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was welded at bottom having the allowable bending stress 2500 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel beam, the section ratios of pre-stressed steel beam and cover plate were 0.5 and 0.6. Adopted pre-stresses were 0%, 50%, and 100% of an allowable fiber stress of a steel beam. The results obtained from the study may be summarized as follows; 1. The elastic range of a beam was increased by the application of pre-stress to the beam, which leads to a lighter section. 2. The permissible moment capacity of a pre-stressed steel beam was greated than that of a steel beam without pre-stressing. 3. The equivalent allowable stress induced by adopting the different section ratio of pre-stressed beam to cover plate were figured out 4. The optimum value of section ratio of beam and cover plate was 0.3 to 0.4 in case of a 1.5m span composite beam, a combination of an allowable stress 2,500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel beam and a permissible fiber stress 4,000 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ steel cover plate, was used. 5. The magnitude of the pre-stress was desirable to be same as the allowable stress of a steel beam. 6. It was concluded that if the construction techniques in the field are developed and improved, the practicing of pre-stress to the steel structure has a promising future.

  • In this study, it was studied on arching characteristics of a grand section tunnel with pre-steel-rib nail reinforcement. In this study, we examine the adaptation of tunnel plan and the case which is based on the strengthening method for preexistence tunnel and other pre-steel-rib nail while the upper part of cover depth is low or soil condition is bad. When the pre-steel-rib nail as new technology and method reinforces the foundation placed of grand section tunnel, it is much better in strengthening effect, safety and effectiveness than the conventional one. After investigation about the plan pre-steel-rib nail method, construction case and calibration data, it was confirmed and examined about the upper part of tunnel for strengthening the pre-steel-rib nail thereby arching characteristics of grand section tunnel using MIDAS/GTS finite element program. Moreover we present the method that could upgrade the accurate installation interval and adaptation method for strengthening effect to adapt the pre-steel-rib nail method in a foundation placed over a tunnel.

Eccentric Axial Loading Test for Concrete-Encased L-section Columns using 800MPa Steel and 100MPa Concrete (800MPa 강재 및 100MPa 콘크리트를 적용한 ㄱ형 강재 매입형 합성기둥의 편심압축실험)

  • Eccentric axial loading test was performed for concrete-encased columns using 800MPa steel and 100MPa concrete. To maximize the contribution of the high-strength steel, L-shaped steel sections were placed at four corners, and connected to each other by lattices, links, or battens. Compared to a H-section of the same area, the moment-arm and strain of the L-sections are increased. Also, the corner L-sections provide good lateral confinement to concrete core. The test results showed that the peak strength and effective flexural stiffness of the L-section columns were increased by more than 1.4 times those of the H-section column.

  • Tubular construction is widely used in a range of civil and structural engineering applications. To date, the principal product range has comprised square, rectangular and circular hollow sections. However, hot-rolled structural steel elliptical hollow sections have been recently introduced and offer further choice to engineers and architects. Currently though, a lack of fundamental structural performance data and verified structural design guidance is inhibiting uptake. Of fundamental importance to structural metallic design is the concept of cross-section classification. This paper proposes slenderness parameters and a system of cross-section classification limits for elliptical hollow sections, developed on the basis of laboratory tests and numerical simulations. Four classes of cross-sections, namely Class 1 to 4 have been defined with limiting slenderness values. For the special case of elliptical hollow sections with an aspect ratio of unity, consistency with the slenderness limits for circular hollow sections in Eurocode 3 has been achieved. The proposed system of cross-section classification underpins the development of further design guidance for elliptical hollow sections.

On the evaluation of critical lateral buckling loads of prismatic steel beams

  • In this study, theoretical models and design procedures of the behavior of thin-walled simply supported steel beams with an open cross section under a large torsional effect are presented. I-sections were chosen as the cross section types. Firstly, the widely used differential equations for the lateral buckling for the pure bending moment effect in a beam element were adopted for the various moment distributions along the span of the beam. This solution was obtained for both mono-symmetric and bisymmetric sections. The buckling loads were then obtained by using the energy method. When using the energy method to solve the problem, it is possible to locate the load not only on the shear center but also at several points of the section depth. Buckling loads were obtained for six different load types. Results obtained for different load and cross section types were checked with ABAQUS software and compared with several standard rules.

Bearing Strength of Hybrid Coupled Shear Wall Connections

  • Due to lack of information, current design methods to calculate bearing strength of connections are tacit about cases in which hybrid coupled walls have connection details of stud bolts and horizontal ties. In this study, analytical study was carried out to develop model for calculating the connections strength of embedded steel section. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. Experiments were carried out to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behavior in connection between steel coupling beam and shear wall, i. e., the auxiliary stud bolts attached to the steel beam flanges and the transverse ties at the top and the bottom steel beam flanges. In addition, additional test were conducted to verify the strength equations of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The results of the proposed equations in this study are in good agreement with both our test results and other test data from the literature.

Corner Steel plate-Reinforced Core Wall System

  • For better structural performance and constructability, a new composite core wall system using steel plate columns at the corners of the core section was developed. Using the proposed core wall, nonlinear section analysis and 3-dimensional structural analysis were performed for the prototype core wall section and super high-rise building, respectively. The analysis results showed that, when compared to traditional RC core wall case, the use of the corner steel plate columns provided better structural capacity, which allows less wall thickness and re-bars. Further, due to such effects, the construction cost and time can be reduced despite the use of steel plate columns.
