  • The adhesion characteristics of the thermoplastic resins such as PE, PP PVC, PET and PS were investigated on the surfaces of conventional steel (SS41), steel (SS41P) treated with ultrasonic waves and the SS41P coated with several ceramic powders (SS41PC) by the plasma spray. Alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$), alumina titania (Al$_2$O$_3$95%, TiO$_2$ 5%) and zirconia yttria (ZrO$_2$ 95%, $Y_2$O$_3$5% ) were used for the materials plasma spray The morphologies, surface hardness, surface roughness, and contact angles on SS41, SS41P, and SS41PC were examined. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of the polymers which were attached to the surfaces of ceramics coated on SS41P also were measured. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of polymers adhered to ceramic surface coated on steel were found to be stronger than those of conventional steel. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of the polymers adhered on the surfaces of ceramics coated steel increased in the following order PE > PET > PP > PS > PVC. The high adhesion strength of PE may be attributed to the surface roughness and its anchor effect on the ceramic surface.

  • Coatings composited with alumina and Perfluoro alkoxyalkane (PFA) resin were deposited on stainless steel plate (SUS304) to further improve corrosion resistance. Plate (ca. $10{\mu}m$) and/or nanosize (27~43 nm) alumina used as inorganic additives were mixed in PFA resin to make alumina-fluoro composite coatings. These coatings were deposited on SUS304 plate with wet spray coating and then the film was cured thermally. According to the amount and ratio of the two kinds of alumina having plate morphology and nano size, corrosion resistance of the film was evaluated under strong acids (HF, HCl) and a strong base (NaOH). The film prepared with the addition of 5~10 wt% alumina powders in PFA resin showed corrosion resistance superior to that of pure PFA resin film. However, for the film prepared with alumina content above 10 wt%, the corrosion resistance did not improve with the physical properties, such as surface hardness and adhesion. The film prepared with plate/nanosize (weight ratio = 1/2) alumina especially enhanced the surface hardness and corrosion resistance. This can be explained as showing that the plate and the nanosize alumina dispersed in PFA resin effectively suppressed the penetration of cations and anions due to the long penetration length and fewer defects that accompany the improved surface hardness under a serious environment of 10% HF solution for over 120 hrs.

  • Tool steels serve a large range of applications including hot and cold workings of metals and injection mouldings of plastics or light alloys. The high speed steels (HSS) are specifically used as cutting tools and wear parts because it has high strength, wear resistance and hardness along with appreciable toughness and fatigue resistance. From the view of HSS microstructure, it can be described as metallic matrix composites formed by a ferrous with a dispersion of hard and wear resistant carbides. The experimental specimens were manufactured using the PIM with T42 powders (50~80 vol.%) and polymer (20~50 vol.%). The green parts were debinded in n-hexane solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours and thermal debinded at an $N_2-H_2$ mixed gas atmosphere for 8 hours. Specimens were sintered in high vacuum ($10^{-5}$ Torr) and various temperatures.

  • For the purpose of investigating the effect of sintering atmosphere and carbon addition on sintered density and microstructural characteristics, the M3/2 grade high speed steel powders with the addition of carbon are sintered in vacuum and $20%H_2/79%N_2/l%CH_4$ gas atmosphere. With the addition of 0 wt%C, 0.45wt%C and 1.15 wt%C the optimum sintering temperatures decrease down to $1260^{\circ}C$, $1210^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$ respectively for the vacuum sintered specimen, and also decrease down to $1130^{\circ}C$, $1120^{\circ}C$ and $1115^{\circ}C$ for the gas sintered specimen. The threshold temperatures for full densification decrease steeply with increasing carbon content of the sintered specimen, while this temperatures are slowly decreased at high carbon content. The vacuum sintered specimen shows the primary carbides of MC and $M_6C$ type at the optimum sintering temperature, and eutectic carbides of $M_2C$ and Fe-Cr type are produced in the oversintered specimen. The gas sintered specimen exhibits M6C and Fe-Cr type primary carbides at the optimum sintering temperature. The eutectic carbides of $M_6C$ and Fe-Cr type and MX type carbonitride are shown for the oversintered specimen in the gas atmosphere. The hardness of gas sintered specimen shows high value of 830-860 Hv due to the increment of carbide precipitation.

  • Nanocrystalline diamond(NCD) coated SiC balls were applied in a ball-on-disk tribometer. After seeding in an ultrasonic bath containing nanometer diamond powders, $2.2{\mu}m$ thick NCD films were deposited on sintered 3 mm diameter SiC balls at $600^{\circ}C$ in a 2.45 GHz microwave plasma CVD system. Bare $ZrO_2$ and SiC balls were prepared for comparison as test balls. Tribology tests were performed in air with pairs of three different balls and mirror polished steel(SKH51) disk. The wear tracks on balls and disks were examined by optical microscope and alpha step profiler. Under the load of 3 N, the friction coefficients of steel against $ZrO_2$, SiC and NCD-coated balls were between 0.4 and 0.8. After a few thousands sliding laps, the friction coefficient of NCD-coated balls dropped from 0.45 to below 0.1 and maintained thereafter. Under a higher load of 10 N or 20 N with a long sliding distance of 2 km, $ZrO_2$ and SiC balls exhibited the similar friction coefficients as above. The friction coefficient of NCD-coated balls was less than 0.1 from the beginning and increased to above 0.1 steadily or with some fluctuations as sliding distance increased. NCD coating layers were found worn out after long duration and/or high load sliding test, which resulted in the friction coefficient higher than 0.1.

  • A Chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC) of austenite stainless steel in dry cask storage system (DCSS) can occur with extending service time than originally designed. Cold spray coating (CSC) not only form a very dense microstructure that can protect from corrosive environments, but also can generate compressive stress on the surface. This characteristic of CSC process is very helpful to increase the resistance for CISCC. CSC with several powders, such as 304L, 316L and Ni can be optimized to form very dense coating layer. In addition, the impact energy generated as the CSC powder collides with the surface of base metal at a speed of Mach 2 or more can remove the residual tensile stress of welding area and serve the compress stress. CSC layers include no oxidation and no contamination with under 0.2% porosity, which is enough to protect from the penetration of corrosive chloride. Therefore, the CSC coating layer can be accompanied by a function that can be disconnected from the corrosive environment and an effect of improving the residual stress that causes CISCC, so the canister's CISCC resistance can be increased.

  • H13 tool steels are widely used as metallic mold materials due to their high hardness and thermal stability. Recently, many studies are undertaken to satisfy the demands for manufacturing the complex shape of the mold using a 3D printing technique. It is reported that the mechanical properties of 3D printed materials are lower than those of commercial forged alloys owing to micropores. In this study, we investigate the effect of microstructures and defects on mechanical properties in the 3D printed H13 tool steels. H13 tool steel is fabricated using a selective laser melting(SLM) process with a scan speed of 200 mm/s and a layer thickness of $25{\mu}m$. Microstructures are observed and porosities are measured by optical and scanning electron microscopy in the X-, Y-, and Z-directions with various the build heights. Tiny keyhole type pores are observed with a porosity of 0.4 %, which shows the lowest porosity in the center region. The measured Vickers hardness is around 550 HV and the yield and tensile strength are 1400 and 1700 MPa, respectively. The tensile properties are predicted using two empirical equations through the measured values of the Vickers hardness. The prediction of tensile strength has high accuracy with the experimental data of the 3D printed H13 tool steel. The effects of porosities and unmelted powders on mechanical properties are also elucidated by the metallic fractography analysis to understand tensile and fracture behavior.

  • Nano-TiO$_2$ photocatalytic coatings were deposited on the stainless steel 304(50$\times$70$\times$3mm) by the APS(Atmospheric Plasma Spraying). Photocatlytic reaction was tested in MB(methylene blue) aqueous solution. For applying nano-TiO$_2$ powders by thermal spray, the starting nano-TiO$_2$ powder with 100% anatase crystalline was agglomerated by spray drying. Plasma second gas(H$_2$) flow rate and spraying distance were used as principal process parameters which are known to control heat enthalpy(heat input). The relationship between process parameters and the characteristics of microstructure such as the anatase phase fraction and grain size of the TiO$_2$ coatings were investigated. The photo-decomposition efficiency of TiO$_2$ coatings was evaluated by the kinetics of MB aqueous solution decomposition. It was found that the TiO$_2$ coating with a lower heat input condition had a higher anatase fraction, smaller anatase grain size and a better photo-decomposition efficiency.

  • Aluminum-based $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites were fabricated by a powder-in sheath rolling method. A stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 12 mm and wall thickness of 1 mm was used as a sheath. A mixture of aluminum powder and $Al_2O_3$ particles of which volume content was varied from 5 to 20%, was filled in the tube by tap filling and then rolled by 75% reduction in thickness at ambient temperature. The rolled specimen was then sintered at 56$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 h. The mixture of Al powders and $Al_2O_3$ particles was successfully consolidated by the sheath rolling. The $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite fabricated by the sheath rolling showed a recrystallized structure, while unreinforced Al powder compact fabricated by the same procedure showed a deformed structure. The unreinforced Al powder compact was characterized by a deformation (rolling) texture of which main component is {112}<111>, while the $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite showed a mixed texture oi deformation and recrystallization. The sintering resulted in recrystallization in Al powder compact and grain growth in the composite.

  • The pressureless sintering behavior of $Al_2O_3$/Cu powder mixtures, prepared from $Al_2O_3$/CuO and $Al_2O_3$/Cu-nitrate, has been investigated. Microstructural observation revealed that $Al_2O_3$ powders with nano-sized Cu particles could be synthesized by hydrogen reduction method. The specimens, pressureless-sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 min using infrared heating furnace with the heating rate of $200^{\circ}C$/min, showed the relative density of above 90%. Maximum hardness of 16.1 GPa was obtained in $Al_2O_3$/MgO/Cu nanocomposites. The nanocomposites exhibited the enhanced fracture toughness of 4.3-5.7 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The mechanical properties were discussed in terms of microstructural characteristics.
