An experimental investigation of composite beams composed of wide flange steel and precast concrete is presented. The bottom flange of the steel section is encased in precast concrete. The composite beams tested in this study were designed to reduce the depth of the slab and beam. The slabs are constructed on top of the edges of the Structural Composite Hybrid System, instead of on top of the steel flange, decreasing the depth of the beams. When concrete is cast on the metal deck plate located on the edges of the precast concrete, the weight of the concrete slabs and other construction loads must be supported by the contacts between the steel and the precast concrete. This interface must not exhibit bearing failures, shear failures, and failures caused by torque due to the loading of the precast concrete. When the contact area between the concrete and the bottom flange of the steel beam is small, these failures of the concrete are likely and must be prevented. The premature failure of precast concrete must not also be present when the weight of the concrete slabs and other construction loads is loaded. This paper presents a load carrying capacity of Structural Composite Hybrid System in order to observe the failure mode. The symmetrically distributed loading that caused the failure of the composite beam was found. The paper also provides design recommendations of such type of composite structure.
The advantages of composite construction are now well understood in terms of structural economy, good performance in service, and ease of construction. However, these conventional composite construction systems have some problems in application to steel framed buildings due to their large depth. So, in this study we executed an experimental test with the "Slim Floor"system which could reduce the overall depth of composite beam. Slim Floor system is a method of steel frame multi-story building construction in which the structural depth of each floor is minimized by incorporating the steel floor beams within the depth of the concrete floor slab. Presented herein is an experimental study that focuses on the flexural behaviour of the partially connected slim floor system with asymmetric steel beams encased in composite concrete slabs. Eight full-scale specimens were constructed and tested in this study with different steel beam height, slab width, with or without shear connection and concrete topping thickness. Observations from experiments indicated that the degree of shear connection without additional shear connection was $0.53{\sim}0.95$ times that of the full shear connection due to inherent mechnical and chemical bond stress.
Profiled composite slab has been widely used in civil engineering due to its structural merits. The extension of this concept to the bearing wall forms the profiled composite wall, which consists of two external profiled steel plates and infill concrete. This paper investigates the structural behavior of this type of wall under axial compression. A series of compression tests on profiled composite walls consisting of varied types of profiled steel plate and edge confinement have been carried out. The test results are evaluated in terms of failure modes, load-axial displacement curves, strength index, ductility ratio, and load-strain response. It is found that the type of profiled steel plate has influence on the axial capacity and strength index, while edge confinement affects the failure mode and ductility. The test data are compared with the predictions by modern codes such as AISC 360, BS EN 1994-1-1, and CECS 159. It shows that BS EN 1994-1-1 and CECS 159 significantly overestimate the actual compressive capacity of profiled composite walls, while AISC 360 offers reasonable predictions. A method is then proposed, which takes into account the local buckling of profiled steel plates and the reduction in the concrete resistance due to profiling. The predictions show good correlation with the test results.

From the previous experimental test results, it has shown that shear that shear strength in lightweight concrete beams was about 85% on that in normal concrete beams. It is speculated that shear connectors in composite beams of steel and lightweight concrete associated with the longitudinal shear strength decrease more in strength than those in normal concrete. So this paper, as a study on strength of shear connectors in composite beams of steel and lightweight concrete slabs, has a purpose to compare the strength formula resulted from the push-out test of thirteen solid slab and four deck Plate slab with the established ones, and then to suggest a proper strength formula of the shear connectors. The established strength formula of the shear connectors is prescribed for $P_ps = 0.50A_s . \sqrt{f_C . E_C}$by AISC coed, but from the experimental test results the strength values of the shear connectors in lightweignt concrete slabs shows about 70% on those of the shear connectors in normal concrete slabs by AISC code. Therefore, as a strength formula this paper suggests to multiply the established strength formula by reduction factor$(\varphi=0.7)$.

The steel-plate concrete composite beam is composed of a steel plate, concrete and shear connector to combine two inhomogeneous materials. In general, the steel plate is assembled by welding an existing composite beam. In this study, the SPC beam was composed of folding steel plates and concrete, without a headed stud. The folding steel plate was assembled by a high strength bolt instead of welding. To improve the workability in a field construction, a hat-shaped cap was attached to the junction with a slab. Monotonic load testing under two points was conducted under displacement control mode to analyze the flexural strength of the SPC beam using a cap as the shear connector. Five specimens with shear connector types, protrusion length, and different thickness of steel plates were constructed and tested. The experimental results were analyzed through the relationship between the shear strength ratio and flexural strength in KBC 2009. The test results showed a shear strength ratio of more than 40 %. In the case of using a cap-like specimen as the shear connector, the flexural strength was 70% of the value calculated as a fully composite beam. In addition, the cap showed a smaller shear strength than the stud, but the cap served as a shear connection. When the thickness of the steel plate was taken as a variable, the steel plate exhibited a bending strength of approximately 70% compared to a fully formed steel plate, and exhibited similar deformation performance. Local buckling occurred due to incomplete composite behavior, but local buckling occurred at a 5% higher strength for a relatively thick steel plate. The buckling width also decreased by 15%.

The paper addresses some key issues related to the design of composite slabs with cold-formed profiled steel sheets. An experimental programme is first presented, involving six composite slab specimens tested with a view to evaluating Eurocode 4 (EC4) provisions on testing of composite slabs. In four specimens, the EC4-prescribed 5000 load cycles were applied using different load ranges resulting from alternative interpretations of the reference load $W_t$. Although the rationale of the application of cyclic loading is to induce loss of chemical bond between the concrete plate and the steel sheet, no such loss was noted in the tests for either interpretation of the range of load cycles. Using the recorded response of the specimens the values of factors m and k (related to interface shear transfer in the composite slab) were determined for the specific steel sheet used in the tests, on the basis of three alternative interpretations of the related EC4 provisions. The test results confirmed the need for a more unambiguous description of the m-k test and its interpretation in a future edition of the Code, as well as for an increase in the load amplitude range to be used in the cyclic loading tests, to make sure that the intended loss of bond between the concrete slab and the steel sheet is actually reached. The study also included the development of a special-purpose software that facilitates design of composite slabs; a parametric investigation of the importance of m-k values in slab design is presented in the last part of the paper.

Recently, research on the development of a composite slab system for shorting the construction period by simplifying the process by omitting the form work and the reinforcement placing is underway. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term behavior of a simplified slab system that replaces the form work and tensile reinforcement using structural deck-plate and replaces the temperature reinforcement using steel fiber reinforced concrete. In the conventional composite deck-plate slab method, w.w.f is generally used for crack control by drying shrinkage. But previous research results by various researchers were pointed out it is not effective to control the shrinkage and temperature cracking. In this study, the long-term cracking and structural behavior of steel fiber reinforced deck plate slab specimen with two continuous spans constructed under typical load conditions were evaluated. Experimental results showed that the number and width of long-term cracks decreased remarkably in the simplified slab specimen, and the deflection was also decreased compared with conventional RC slab specimen. However, in the continuous end of the slab where the negative moment is applied, it is analyzed that reinforced details are necessary to control the crack width in the service load and to recover deflection at load removal.

The steel-plate concrete composite beam is composed of a steel plate, concrete and a shear connector to combine the two inhomogeneous materials. In general, the steel plate is assembled by welding an existing composite beam. In this study, a new steel-plate concrete composite (SPCC) beam was developed to reduce the size of the shear connector and improve its workability. The SPCC beam was composed of folded steel plates and concrete, without any shear connector. The folded steel plate was assembled with high strength bolts instead of welding. To improve the workability in field construction, a hat-shaped cap was attached in the junction with the slab. Monotonic two-point load testing was conducted under displacement control mode. The flexural strength of the SPCC beam specimen was calculated to be 76% of that of the complete composite beam by using the plastic stress distribution method and strain compatibility method. The cap acted as the stud and accessory. The synthesis rate could be increased by controlling the gap of the cap, and the bending performance could be evaluated by using the strain fitting method considering the synthesis rate of the SPCC beam.

In the present paper, the impact damage behavior of steel plate reinforced concrete panels exposed to shock impulsive loading and fragment impact loading is investigated. To evaluate the retrofit performance of a steel-strengthened concrete panels, a numerical experiment using a numerical simulation with AUTODYN, an explicit analysis program is introduced because a real explosion experiment requires the vast investment and expense for facilities as well as the deformation mechanisms are too complicated to be reproduced with a conventional closed-form analyses. The model for the analysis is simplified and idealized as a two-dimensional and axisymmetric case controled with geometry, boundary condition and material properties in order to obtain a resonable computation time. As a result of the analysis, panels subject to either shock loading or fragment loading without the steel plate reinforcement experience the perforation with spalled fragments. In addition, the panels reinforced with steel plate can prevent the perforation and provide the good mechanical effect such as the increase of global stiffness and strength through the composite action between the concrete slab and the steel plate.
A genetic algorithm-based minimum weight design method is presented for steel frames containing composite beams, semi-rigid connections and column bases. Genetic Algorithms carry out optimum steel frames by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list including 128 W sections taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The displacement and stress constraints obeying AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specification and geometric (size) constraints are incorporated in the optimization process. Optimum designs of three different plane frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column and column-to-base plate connections are carried out first without considering concrete slab effects on floor beams in finite element analyses. The same optimization procedures are then repeated for the case of frames with composite beams. A program is coded in MATLAB for all optimization procedures. Results obtained from the examples show the applicability and robustness of the method. Moreover, it is proved that consideration of the contribution of concrete on the behavior of the floor beams enables a lighter and more economical design for steel frames with semi-rigid connections and column bases.
