A new steel sheet pile of wide hat-type was developed. Advantage of using wide type of sheet pile is reducing steel weight and consequently cutting down construction cost. Field driveability tests were conducted in order to verifying vibro-driveability of wide hat-type sheet pile. As a result of the tests, penetration rates of newly developed sheet piles were less than those of U-type sheet piles. Axial stresses developed in sheet pile during driving were fur less than yield stress of sheet pile. Futhermore, initial penetration rates of sheet piles were much larger than those obtained from WEAP program.

In soft grounds with deep bearing stratum, the PHC piles are generally joined by welding or prefabricated method. However, the existing joining methods have some problems in a side view of workability, quality and cost etc. In this study, a new joining method of PHC piles, which removes the problems of the existing methods, is developed. Static and dynamic load tests in fields as well as laboratory tests such as tensile and bending tests are conducted to investigate the workability and structural safety of PHC piles joined by the new method. The test results show that tensile and bending resistances of the joint part are higher than those of PHC pile itself. PHC piles with 400mm diameter are joined by the new method within 4 minutes while 25 minutes for welding method. Bearing capacities of the PHC piles joined by the new method are nearly the same as those of jointed PHC piles by welding method.
Bored pre-cast piles using PHC piles is widely used in foundation of building structures constructed in urban areas because noise and vibration due to pile installation are low. However, since slime is formed at the base of borehole and the density of bearing stratum surrounding the base of borehole is decreased due to stress relaxation in drilling process of bored pre-cast pile method, the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles is very low compared to the strength of bearing stratum. In this study, a new type of PHC pile, which short steel pipe with the same diameter as the PHC pile is attached to the pile tip, is developed to increase the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles. In order to check the effect of the use of new PHC pile on the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles, field pile load tests are performed for bored pre-cast piles using the new and existing PHC piles. Results of the pile load tests show that the new PHC pile gives higher base load capacity to bored pre-cast piles than the existing PHC pile, since the tip of new PHC pile is penetrated to undisturbed bearing stratum passing through the slime at the base of borehole and the loosened bearing stratum under the slime by pile driving using light hammer.
H-pile can be more easily driven than pipe pile by pile driver and shows high skin friction and plugging effect. And lately It is well grown that the high strength H-pile has been widely used f3r pile foundations. To compare the skin frictions of H piles under different density soil conditions, this paper presents results of a series of model tests on vertically loaded group piles. Model piles made of steel embedded in weathered granite soil were used in this study. Pile arrangements $(2\times2,\;3\tunes3)$, pile space(2D, 4D, 6D), and soil density$(D_r=40\%,\;80\%)$ were tested. The main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows. The series of tests found that compression load for group piles increases as number of piles increase and piles space ratic decrease to $D_r=40\%$ of soil density. The analysis also found that the theoretical value of skin friction for group piles is greater than practical value as piles space ratio increases to $D_r=40\%$ of soil density. Piles showed the greatest difference of the skin friction in case that the pile space ratio(S/D) is 6. The theoretical value by Meyerhof and DM-7 showed 1.83 times and 1.32 times respectively as great as practical value in case of S/D=6 and $2\times2$.

Resistance factors for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the framework of reliability theory. A comprehensive foundation design case study on an actual bridge was performed using resistance factors developed in this study. Comparing with Allowable Stress Design (ASD), LRFD design method provides quantitative evaluation of safety level of designed foundation and exhibits considerable potential economy in design.

LRFD Resistance factors for static bearing capacity of driven steel pipe piles were calibrated in the freamework of reliability theory. Reliability analysis was performed by the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) using resistance bias factor statistics. The target reliability indices are selected as 2.0 and 2.33 for group pile case and 2.5 for single pile case, based on the reliability level of the current design practice and considering redundancy of pile group, acceptable risk level, construction quality control, and significance of individual structure.
Open-ended steel pipe piles have outside frictional force and inside frictional resistance in which blocked soil acts on the inside of the steel pipe during installation. It is expected that the ultimate load will change depending on the inside and outside resistance. And, if the ground on which the piles were constructed is clay soil, it is predicted that it will have effect on the negative skin friction caused by the ground settlement. Therefore, in this study, the behavior according to the inside and outside resistance characteristics of steel pipe piles was analyzed numerically, and the frictional force distribution, axial load and settlements before and after the occurrence of ground settlement were calculated. As a result of the analysis, the inside frictional resistance had less influence than the outside frictional resistance. However, inside frictional resistance is considered to be one of the important factors considering the effect on the overall pile behavior, and both resistance factors need to be considered in the design process.

Instrumented steel sheet piles being driven by vibratory pile driver were installed in granular soil deposit and behaviors of the sheet piles were investigated. One of the instrumented steel sheet pile was installed without clutch and the other was installed with clutch. Sheet pile with clutch means that of installed in connection with pre-installed sheet pile. Penetration rates of sheet piles measured from depth measuring drum has shown that interlock friction had great effect on penetration speed of sheet pile. Clutch friction shows irregular distribution along the depths of penetration and its magnitude was estimated as 19.1kN/m. According to the accelerations obtained from accelerometer, it was seen that steel sheet pile behaviored nearly as a rigid body. Efficiency factor of an isolated sheet pile was 0.42 and that of the connected sheet pile was 0.71. Shapes of dynamic load transfer curves obtained from analysis of measuring devices was similar to those suggested by Dierssen.
The standard penetration test (SPT) has been widely used because of its usability, economy, and many correlations with soil properties among other factors. In SPT, hammer energy is an important factor to evaluate and calibrate N values. To measure hammer energy, an instrumented SPT rod was developed considering that stress waves transferring on rods during SPT driving are the same as stress waves transferring on piles due to pile driving. Using this idea, an instrumented SPT rod with a pile driving analyzer was applied as a pile capacity prediction tool in this study. In order to evaluate this method, SPT and dynamic cone tests with the instrumented SPT rod were conducted and also 2 pile load tests were performed on pre-bored steel pipe piles at the same test site. End bearings were predicted by CAPWAP analysis on force and velocity waves from dynamic cone penetration tests and SPT. Comparing these predicted end bearings with static pile load tests, a new prediction method of the end bearing capacity using the instrumented SPT rod was proposed.
In this study, the static and dynamic load tests were carried out to propose the safety factor of steel prebored and precast piles in weathered rocks. The axial load tests have been conducted on test piles with nominal diameters of 0.508 and 0.457 m. The piles were subject to static loading tests (14 times) and dynamic loading tests (EOID 14times, Restrike 14times). The dynamic loading tests were first executed after the casting of test piles ((1) initial EOID test). (2)In the succeding 28 days from completion of construction, static load tests were performed and (3)final restrike tests were carried out after 15 days from the static test. As a result, the bearing capacity based on Davisson method was 15% higher than that of the restrike tests. The bearing capacity of the static load tests were larger than that of the dynamic tests. By comparing the safety factor through various loading tests, the safety factor of dynamic loading tests were suggested to be lowered to 1.75 from the conventional 2.0.
