A Technology Pricing Model for the Steel Manufacturing Industry (철강산업의 기술판매가격 산정 모형 개발)

  • Since there are various types of technologies in the steel manufacturing industry, steel manufacturers need to adopt the most suitable technology Pricing method contingent on the technology type. Steel manufacturing technologies could be categorized as three groups. First, product and process technologies can enhance sales and contribute revenue increase, DCF method could be recommended. Second, maintenance and quality management technologies are mainly embodied in people, human resource profitability method is more suitable. Third, break-through technologies have great uncertainty in terms of commercialization and commercial success, therefore cost saving method is more reasonable. Finally, a sample case is suggested applying above technology pricing model to a steel manufacturer.

  • Occupational stresses of steel manufacturing workers have been investigated using an organized questionnaire composed of 40 items. Three hypothesizes were developed based on the literature review of related researches. Empirical data surveyed from ones working in steel manufacturing jobs were collected and the in-depth statistical analyses using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(SPSS) software were performed. These statistical results indicate that the existence of occupational stress may cause to take place industrial accidents. Consequentially, the prevention of occupational stress helps to promote the will to work, following by increasing job satisfaction in working circumstance of steel manufacturing.

The Patterns and Directions of Technological Innovation in the Steel Industry (철강산업의 기술혁신패턴과 발전과제)

  • This article prospects the patterns of technological innovation in the steel industry and suggests the directions of technological innovation in Korean steel industry. Technological innovation patterns can be analysed through technological trends, innovation-inducing mechanism, and innovators' relationships. In the technological trends, direct coupling of manufacturing processes, lasting growth of mini-mill, and the importance of technological integration are prospected. In the innovation-inducing mechanism, while production system will be specialized, the development of new steel materials and environment-friendly technological innovation will be accelerated. In the innovators' relationships, steel industry faces more complex competition and new forms of inter-firm cooperation including M&A, joint venture, and joint R&D. In order to cope with such changes in the technological innovation patterns, Korean steel industry need to establish core competence based on technological innovation through a great leap in R&D investment, the production of high value-added products, the development of new generation steel technologies, strategic joint R&D, comprehensive technological cooperation, and government's active support.

  • IPS(Ideal Production System) is a strategic cost management establishing ideal target cost, innovating cost structure and reduction. However, IPS was commonly used in assembly industry acquiring components and using them to assemble vehicles etc. Applying IPS to steel industry is a new try and not easy because cost elements in flow manufacturing are clustered and obfuscated in a complicated way. This paper proposes ICM (Ideal Cost Management) method adaptive to steel industry. One of the biggest advantages is that ICM could classify and categorize costs in detail according to accounts and manufacturing machines. Based on ICM information, steps of extracting and maximizing ideas are followed effectively. From 2013, ICM was applied successfully to POSCO Pohang Steel Works 38 factories.

A Case Study on Implementing Microservice Architecture in Steel Manufacturing MES (철강 제조 MES의 마이크로서비스 아키텍처 적용 구축사례 연구)

  • Recently, the application of microservice architecture has been increasing as information systems have shifted to cloud environments. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the case of applying microservice architecture to MES in the manufacturing field, summarize the results of how it was applied in practice, and find out the effects of the application. Based on the improvement project by applying microservice architecture to the existing steel manufacturing MES, 11 principles of microservice application were derived through literature research, and the implementation process and results were summarized according to these principles. In addition, through a comparison of systems in the service industry and the manufacturing industry, we investigated why the application of microservices was more active in the service industry and whether the application in the manufacturing industry can be expected to have the same effect. We also evaluated the results and changes in the overall system after implementation. In particular, we analyzed the SR (Service Request) processing status of users' requests for system changes and operators' requests to see how much the lead time was reduced. The results showed that 8 out of 11 microservice application principles were properly implemented according to the principles, but the remaining 3 were not applicable due to practical difficulties and organizational circumstances. Despite not following all of the principles, the project was able to be implemented without any problems, and the most noticeable change as a result of the microservices architecture was that the lead time was reduced by 9 days compared to the previous system. This proves that it is possible to quickly adapt to customer requirements, and it also proves that the system is more flexible and scalable than the existing monolithic system.

  • The automobile industry is a wide range of related industries, including parts manufacturing and vehicle assembly, press processing is an essential element in making automobiles. Press processing is a processing method for metal sheets that has relatively high dimensional and shape precision and is suitable for mass production. It refers to processing by attaching a special tool, a mold, to a press machine. Recently, the automobile industry is attempting to reduce the weight of automobiles in order to reduce carbon emissions due to global warming, and the use of high-strength steel sheets, which are lighter than general structural steel sheets, is a natural trend. Shear processing is required to use high-strength steel, and the shape of the shear surface created by shear processing has a significant impact on the quality of the automobile. Therefore, various methods are being attempted to improve the share surface during shear processing. Among them, shaving processing is a method of shearing the primary shearing area again, and it is difficult to obtain an accurate answer because complex deformation occurs in the microscopic shear area. Therefore, in this study, the effect of machining allowance on shaving processing was analyzed using the finite element method using high-strength steel plate (SPFH590), and the differences were compared and examined through actual experiments under the same conditions.

Improvement on Access Control of Hazard Zone in a Steel Manufacturing Industry (철강 제조업에서의 유해.위험구역 출입 관리 방안)

  • Access-control of hazard zone in a steel manufacturing industry is studied in terms of safety management. Based on the results of risk evaluation for hazard zone, three risk zones with low, middle and high level are categorized. These zones have different color door and locking shape depending on their risk levels. At the high level, red door and key-based locking system are employed to accessed-controled path. Furthermore, tagout, lockout, interlock system for emergency stop, warning and flashing are also introduced. New standardized procedure of access-control for various hazard zones, which could help to greatly contribute to the prevention of accidents in advance, is proposed considering the risk level and the condition of given hazard zones. The standardized procedure of access-management suggested in this study will take an effective role as one of safety guide lines for hazardous workshop of manufacturing industries.

Characteristics of Heavy Metal Emissions from Stationary Sources (고정오염원에서의 중금속 배출특성 연구)

  • The results of HAPs emission data using TRI (Toxic Release Inventory), SODAM (Source Data Management system) were investigated and the emissions of 7 heavy metals from their sources and emission processes were also analyzed. Questionnaire for source data analysis as well as the stack sampling were carried out for 17 factories among 6 selected industrial types. The annual amount of emissions was estimated based on the measured concentration and flow rates. All sources were operated with high efficiency control devices and the concentration levels of all heavy metals were shown to be below 0.1 to of regulation standard. The highest emission source of heavy metals was steel manufacturing industry with the annual emission of 342.9 kg/yr and followed by hazardous waste incinerator, paint manufacturing, nonferrous metal manufacturing, rolling & press goods manufacturing and storage battery manufacturing. In the case of Hg, the emissions were quite significant from electric acros of steel manufacturing industry, although the concentration level was below the emission standard, showing the necessity of specific care for its management.
