  • The BI (Ball Indentation) method has the potential to assess the mechanical properties and to replace conventional fracture tests. In this study, the effect of aging on mechanical behavior of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels procured by isothermal aging heat-treatment at four different aging times in the range of 0~1820 hours at 630$^{\circ}C$, were investigated using BI system.

  • In the manufacturing process of HDD, ball swaging method is commonly used to joint the Head Gimbal Assembly(HGA) with the arm of the actuator. The hub on the HGA is placed into the hole of the actuator arm, and the hub and arm is bonded by the pressure of steel ball. The pressure for plastic deformation on the baseplate causes the undesirable deformation on HGA, such as tilting, flying height change of head. After obtaining the key parameters that have large sensitivity on the swaging process, the optimal shape of baseplate is proposed to increase the static performance during swaging process. Contribution of the proposed design for the swaging performance is verified by contact simulation with elasto-plastic deformation.

  • The needs to machine hardened steels with high productivity and good surface integrity have been increased in the dies & molds industry. This paper presents some experimental results on the CBN ball endmilling for hardened tool steel. This investigation concerns on the effects of cutting speed and cutting fluids on the cutting performance such as cutting forces, tool wear, and surface finish. The wear of CBN ball endmill for each cutting conditions were also examined through the microscopic observation. It has been found out that the higher cutting speeds with cutting fluids result in better cutting performance.

  • The rolling fatigue lives (RFL) of five kinds of silicon nitride balls were investigated. Four kinds of Si$_3$N$_4$balls were fabricated using different raw materials, sintering aids and sintering conditions. Commercially available Si$_3$N$_4$ball was also studied for comparison. All the balls were finished up to the dimensional accuracy of Grade 10 defined in KS B 2001 (Steel Balls fer Ball Bearings) with a size of 9.525 mm. RFL tests were then conducted under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress 6.38 GPa and the spindle speed 10,000 rpm. Gear oil was provided by oiled race as lubricant. The results of RFL test indicated the prerequisitic conditions for the long rolling life of Si$_3$N$_4$ball : (1) the high density, (2) microstructures consisted of small uniformly distributed grains, (3) little glassy phase in grainboundary, and (4) little crystalline phase and secondary phase that induces residual thermal stress due to the differences of thermal expansion coefficient with Si$_3$N$_4$phase.

  • The 440C stainless steel is used for ball bearings and bevel gears in the control rod drive mechanism for the integral reactor, SMART. The friction characteristics of 400C stainless steel a investigated in sliding motion using the reciprocating tribometer which can simulate the operating conditions of the control rod drive mechanism. Highly purified water is used as lubricant, and the water is heated and pressurized in the autoclave. Friction force on the reciprocating specimens is measured by the load cells and transformed into friction coefficient. It is verified that frictional characteristic of the 440c steel is not drastically changed up to operating temperature and variation of friction coeffcient at operating temperature from room temperature to 160$^{\circ}C$ is within 5%.

  • Austenitic stainless steel has been used as a corrosion resistance material. However, austenitic stainless steel has poor wear resistance property due to its low hardness. In this investigation, we apply powder composite process to obtain hard layer of Stainless steel. The composite material was fabricated from planetary ball milled SUS316L stainless steel powder and WC powder and then sintered by Pulsed Current Sintering (PCS) method. We also added TiC powder as a hard particle in WC layer. Evaluations of wear properties were performed by pin-on-disk wear testing machine, and a remarkable improvement in wear resistance property was obtained.

  • Continuous wave CO$_{2}$laser beam welding and formability of zinc coated steel shets were investigated. First, optimal welding condition could be obtained in but welding by using the data for heat input and welding velocity. The highest value of Erichsen test is 79.3% compare to that of base matel. Secondly, Formability of laser welds was investigated by using ball punch tester. Finally, the forming results of butt-welded sheets showed that the joing design was important to apply the laser welded blank in the automotive production.

  • The magnetic domain-refining techniques such as ball scratching, laser irradiation and plasma have been developed to reduce the domain wall spacing and thus iron losses in Fe-3%Si grain-oriented silicon steels. In view point of magnetic properties, it was supposed that the locally residual stresses change the magnetoelastic energy of the material and thus the spacing between $180^{\circ}$ domain walls decreases in order to reduce the magnetostatic energy. The effect of laser irradiation on iron loss and magnetostriction reduction for Fe-3%Si grain-oriented steel were investigated. Since the local tensile stresses were induced at the surface of Fe-3%Si steel by the laser irradiation, the minimum iron loss caused by reducing eddy current loss was obtained in spiete of the decrease of permeability by hindering eddy current loss was obtained in spite of the decrease of permeability by hindering the domain wall movement around the induced stress field. Furthermore, the laser treated 3%Si steel has lower magnetostriction as compared to non laser-treated steel and is less sensitive to applying pre-stresses due to the volume reduction of $90^{\circ}$ domain in materials.
