  • This research is experimental paper to prepare the structural safety of the upper bridge for support type on tunnel and the effect of settlement. Unit weight test and uni-axial compression test have been performed to simulate the physical property of foundation on the tunnel. Tunnel model of slip form type for centrifuge model has been developed to performed the tunnel excavation while field stress is activated. And the support type of tunnel such as umbrella arch method and large diameter steel pipe reinforce method has been tested for the centrifuge model. After the analysis of experiment, results show that internal displacement of large diameter steel pipe reinforce method is smaller than that of the umbrella arch method.

  • In this study, 9 reinforced concrete(RC) continuous beams were tested to investigate the arch action. By measuring longitudinal steel strains during the whole loading stages up to failure, the development of arch action is evaluated. Variables included are span length, longitudinal steel ratio and the presence of stirrups. As a result, it was known that measured steel tension in the span is substantially higher than the conventionally calculated values, and it was appeared that near the middle of the shear span the measured values exceeded the calculated values by factors of up to 1.4 or more.

  • When arch ribs are subjected to vertical loading, they may buckle suddenly towards the in-plane direction. Therefore, the designer should consider their in-plane stability. In this paper, the in-plane elastic and inelastic buckling strength of parabolic, fixed arch ribs subjected to vertical distributed loading were investigated using the finite element method. A finite element model for the snap-through and inelastic behavior of arch ribs was verified using other researchers' test results. The ultimate strength of arch ribs was determined by taking into account their large deformation, material inelasticity, and residual stress. Finally, the finite element analysis results were compared with the EC3 design code.

  • Advanced analysis and optimal design of steel arch bridges is presented. In the design method using an advanced analysis, separate member capacity checks after analysis are not required because the stability and strength of the structural system and its component members can be rigorously treated in the analysis. The geometric nonlinearity is considered by using the stability function. The Column Research Council tangent modulus is used to account for gradual yielding due to residual stresses. A parabolic function is used to represent the transition from elastic to zero stiffness associated with a developing hinge. An optimization technique used is a modified section increment method. The member with the largest unit value evaluated by AASHTO-LRFD interaction equation is replaced one by one with an adjacent larger member selected in the database. The objective function is taken as the weight of the steel arch bridge and the constraint functions account for load-carrying capacities and deflection requirements. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those given by other approaches.

  • Development of high-strength and light-weight structural steel as well as advancement in steel structure analysis enable construction of long span steel arch bridge. In an economic viewpoint, however, the design values of long span steel arch bridge needs to be optimized to reduce construction cost and achieve proper levels of structural safety. This study investigated the girder depth and the rise-span ratio for optimum design values, as well as the spectral analysis for protection against earthquake. The relationship between rise-span ratio and girder depth was derived based on the parametric studies of the basic span lengths of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100m using a commercial Cis SAP2000. The equation relating the two variables was derived using linear regression.

  • The web-encased steel-concrete composite (WESCC) beam is a new developed steel-concrete composite beam. Experiments of six simply supported WESCC beam specimens were conducted. The effects of the shear-span ratio and steel section type were all investigated on the static behaviors such as failure modes, failure mechanism and bearing capacity. The experimental results denoted that all specimens failed in bending mode and the degree of combination between the bottom armor plate of steel shape and concrete were very well without any evident slippage, which demonstrated that the function of bottom armor plate and web were fully exerted in the WESCC beams. It could be concluded the WESCC beams have high stiffness, high load carrying capacity and advanced ductility. The design methods are proposed which mainly consist the bearing capacity calculation of bending and flexural rigidity. The calculation results of the bearing capacity and deflection which take the shear deflection into account are in agreement with the experimental results. The design methods are useful for design and application of the innovative composite beams.

  • In this research, static load test is performed to verify the arch effect and structural performance of CFTA(Concrete-Filled and Tied steel tubular Arch) girder, and FE(Finite Element) analysis is performed to investigate validity of the test result. CFTA girder is designed to maximize the benefit of each material, such as steel plate, filled concrete and PS tendon. Static load test is performed based on the frame-analysis result of 12m sample miniature model. The result of static load test is that structural performance and safety of CFTA girder are confirmed and there is different deflection mode with other structural form result from arch effect. FE analysis with ABAQUS is also performed to show the validity of the truck collision safety and static load test.

  • Composite nature of the masonry structures in general causes complex and non-linear behaviour, especially in intense vibration conditions. The presence of different types and forms of structural elements and different materials is a major problem for the analysis of these type of structures. For this reason, the analysis of the behaviour of masonry structures requires a combination of experimental tests and non-linear mathematical modelling. The famous UNESCO Heritage Old Bridge in Mostar was selected as an example for the analysis of the global behaviour of reinforced stone arch masonry bridges. As part of the experimental research, a model of the Old Bridge was constructed in a scale of 1:9 and tested on a shaking table platform for different levels of seismic excitation. Non-linear mathematical modelling was performed using a combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM), including the effect of connection elements. The paper presents the horizontal displacement of the top of the arch and the failure mechanism of the Old Bridge model for the experimental and the numerical phase, as well as the comparison of the results. This research provided a clearer insight into the global behaviour of stone arch masonry structures reinforced with steel clamps and steel dowels, which is significant for the structures classified as world cultural heritage.

  • We proposed the concept of nominal rigidity of a long-span V-shaped rigid frame composite arch bridge, analyzed the effects of structural parameters on nominal rigidity, and derived a theoretical nominal rigidity equation. In addition, we discussed the selection of the arch-to-beam rigidity ratio and its effect on the distribution of internal forces, and analyzed the influence of the ratio on the internal forces. We determined the delimitation value between rigid arch-flexible beam and flexible arch-rigid beam. We summarized the nominal rigidity and arch to beam rigidity ratios of existing bridges. The results show that (1) rigid arch-flexible beam and flexible arch-rigid beam can be defined by the arch-to-beam rigidity ratio; (2) nominal rigidities have no obvious differences among the continuous rigid frame composite arch bridge, V-shaped rigid frame bridge, and arch bridge, which shows that nominal rigidity can reflect the global stiffness of a structure.
