  • Two-dimensional steady state simulations of planar type radio frequency inductively coupled plasma (RFICP) have been performed. The characteristics of RFICP were investigated in terms of power transfer efficiency, equivalent circuit analysis, spatial distribution of plasma density and electron temperature. Plasma density and electron temperature were determined from the equations of ambipolar diffusion and energy conservation. Joule heating, ionization, excitation and elastic collision loss were included as the source terms of the electron energy equation. The electromagnetic field was calculated from the vector potential formulation of ampere's law. The peak electron temperature decreases from about 4eV to 2eV as pressure increases from 5 mTorr to 100 mTorr. The peak density increases with increasing pressure. Electron temperatures at the center of the chamber are almost independent of input power and electron densities linearly increase with power level. The results agree well with theoretical analysis and experimental results. A single turn, edge feeding antenna configuration shows better density uniformity than a four-turn antenna system at relatively low pressure conditions. The thickness of the dielectric window should be minimized to reduce power loss. The equivalent resistance of the system increases with both power and pressure, which reflects the improvement of power transfer efficiency.

  • The experimental study investigates two aspects of counterflow sensible heat regenerator operation. First, it examines the regenerator performance in periodic steady state operation with spatially nonuniform inlet temperature in one of the fluid stream. Second, the study examines the transient response of a regenerator to a step change in the inlet temperature of one of the fluid streams. The effect of transient inlet temperatures is analyzed in terms of the response of the outlet fluid temperatures to a step change in temperature of one of the inlet fluid streams. The effect of temperature nonuniformities is analyzed in terms of the change of temperature nonuniformities is analyzed in terms of the change in steady state effectiveness due to a circumferential temperature distribution in one of the inlet fluid streams. an experimental analysis has been conducted using a counterflow, parallel passage, and rotary regenerator made from polyethylene film. Efficiencies follow similar trends with increasing matrix to fluid capacity rate ratio for the balanced and symmetric regenerator with nonuniform inlet temperature.

  • Optimization study has been carried out to design an energy efficient, high temperature vacuum furnace which satisfies users' design requirements. First of all, the transient temperature distribution and the uniform temperature zone results have been compared with the steady state results to validate the feasibility of using steady state solution when constructing the thermal analysis DB. In order to check the accuracy, the interpolated results using thermal analysis DB have been compared with the computational and the experimental results. In this study, total heat flux is selected as the objective function, and the geometry parameters of vacuum furnace including the thickness of insulator, the heat zone sizes and the interval between heater and insulator are the design variables. The Uniform temperature zone sizes and the wall temperature are imposed as the design constraints. With negligible computational cost a high temperature vacuum furnace which has $40\sim60%$ reduction in total heat flux is designed using thermal analysis DB.

  • The study on the heat exchanger with catalytic combustion was performed as the development of the catalytic combustion applications. This study tried to achieve the both goals-the mixture preheating and the heat transfer to working fluid simultaneously by using the steady state catalytic combustion. The combustion characteristics were investigated with the quantitative, qualitative experimental variants of the mixture. In addition, the temperature distribution of catalytic layer was investigated to investigate the correlation between the combustion characteristics and the heat balance of the catalytic layer. As a result, the steady state reaction within the appropriate range of temperature is the critical factor in catalytic applications. To get this, the sensible control of both the mixture flow and the heat balance of catalytic layer were required.

  • This study is on the development of the computer program that calculates a 3-D hull temperadistribution and analyzes BOR(Boil off rate) to be important to the heat design of a membrane type LNG carrier. The quarter of a tank is taken as an calculation model. And the thermal conductivity of insulation is assumed to be the function of a temperature. In the present steady state calculation, the temperature of LNG in a cargo tank is assumed to be -$162^{\circ}C$ and the air temperature of a cofferdam, to be +$5^{\circ}C$. The lowest air temperature in compartments is calculated as $21.39^{\circ}C$ under the USCG condition ($T_{air}=-18^{\circ}C,\;T_{sw}=O^{\circ}C)$ and B.O.R value is O.0977%/day under the maximum boil-off condition, IMO IGC ($T_{air}=45^{\circ}C,\;T_{sw}=32^{\circ}C$), which satisfies the requirement by KOGAS. The calculated temperature distribution over tank panels at each condition is maximum 3% less than GTT's results. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the present design of LNG cargo tank satisfies the requirement by KOGAS.

  • Heat pipe cooled reactors have gained attention as a potential solution for nuclear power generation in space and deep sea applications because of their simple design, scalability, safety and reliability. However, under complex operating conditions, a control strategy for variable load operation is necessary. This paper presents a two-dimensional transient characteristics analysis program for a heat pipe cooled reactor and proposes a variable load control strategy using the recuperator bypass (CSURB). The program was verified against previous studies, and steady-state and step-load operating conditions were calculated. For normal operating condition, the predicted temperature distribution with constant heat pipe temperature boundary conditions agrees well with the literature, with a maximum temperature difference of 0.4 K. With the implementation of the control strategy using the recuperator bypass (CSURB) proposed in this paper, it becomes feasible to achieve variable load operation and return the system to a steady state solely through the self-regulation of the reactor, without the need to operate the control drum. The average temperature difference of the fuel does not exceed 1 % at the four power levels of 70 %,80 %, 90 % and 100 % Full power. The output power of the turbine can match the load change process, and the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the turbine increases as the power decreases.

  • In the theory of retrial queues it is usually assumed that the flow of primary customers is Poisson. This means that the number of independent sources, or potential customers, is infinite and each of them generates primary arrivals very seldom. We consider now retrial queueing systems with a homogeneous population, that is, we assume that a finite number K of identical sources generates the so called quasi-random input. We present a survey of the main results and mathematical tools for finite source retrial queues, concentrating on M/G/1//K and M/M/c//K systems with repeated attempts.

  • Thermal analysis has been performed to evaluate the thermal effect on composite antenna (Ka-band) structure in space environment. The concepts of thermal control are also presented to maintain the antenna components within respective temperature limits. A steady-state algorithm of I-DEAS' thermal analysis software was utilized to predict both maximum and minimum temperature, maximum gradient temperature, and temperature distribution on each antenna component.

  • The inverse heat conduction problems is the calculation of surface heat transfer coefficients by utilizing measured temperature. The numerical technique of finite element analysis and optimizition is introduced to calculate temperatures and heat transfer coefficients. The calculated heat transfer coefficients and temperature distribution are good agreement with the results of direct analysis. The inverse method has been applied to the control valve of nuclear power plant.
