  • There exist many real situations that statistical decision problems are classified into more than two categories. In these cases, the concordance statistics by the pair approach are mostly used. However, the expression of the classification of categories are ambiguous. Recently, the standardized evaluation data and re-expressed concordance statistics are defined and could be explained their meanings. They have still some non-specific problems for standard criteria of the statistics. Since these can be considered between result and truth categories additionally, two alternative concordance statistics might be proposed in this paper. Some advantages are founded that the proposed statistics could be discriminated all possible cases for two randomly selected categories. Moreover since the proposed statistics are represented with indicator functions, these could be transformed non-parametrically, so that these concordances are used for hypothesis testing.

  • The statistics of disaster and safety control which have been produced by NEMA(National Emergency Management Agency) and other related agencies have some problems which show redundancies and the lack of connections. These problems can result in disbelief of disaster-management related policies and cause uncertainties on standardization. One of the main problems is caused by the lack of an integrated system that can coordinate available statistical resources. The objectives of this paper are to propose possible ways for the rearrangement of statistics categories, the improvement of statistics indicators and the integration of statistics of disaster and safety management based on the improvement of related laws and regulations. Through the integrated system for an efficient production of disaster and safety-related statistics, it will be possible to establish more accredited disaster-management policies based on the scientific statistics and international standard.

  • In spite of the usefulness of migration statistics in spatially understanding social processes and identifying social effects of spatial processes, services and analyses of the statistics have been restricted due to the complexity of their data structure. In addition, flow mapping functionality which is a useful method to explore and visualize the migration statistics has yet to be fully represented in modern GIS applications. Given this, the purpose of this research is to demonstrate the possibility of flow mapping and the exploratory spatial analysis of the migration statistics in a Web GIS environment. For this, the characteristics of the statistics were examined from database, GIS, and cartographic perspectives. Then, O-D structure of the migration statistics was converted to spatial data appropriate to f low mapping based on the characteristics. The interface of Web GIS is specialized the migration statistics and provides exploratory visualization by allowing dynamic interactions such as spatial focusing and attribute filtering.

  • Four statistics books, one translated by statisticians and three by non-statisticians, are reviewed. They are reviewed in terms of indices and bibliographies, statistical theory and terms, and the history of statistics. In addition, book review articles appeared in daily newspapers are considered. Unfortunately, we can find many(some of them trivial, and some others serious) problems in the translations. Many problems could have been got around if the books had been translated by statisticians. So, conclusion suggested in this article is very simple: Translation of statistics books, especially books for the laymen, is a job that Korean statisticians should not shift to others. Titles of the books reviewed in this article are as follows. 1. Rao, C. Radhakrishna(1997). Statistics and Truth : Putting Chance to Work, Second edition, World Scientific. 2. Best, Joel (2001). Damnel lies and Statistics : Understanding Numbers from the Media, Politicians, and Activists, University of California Press. 3. Bennett, Deborah J. (1998). Randomness, Harvard University Press; 4. Salsburg, David (2001). The Lady Tasting Tea : How Statistics Revolutionized Science in the Twentieth Century, W. H. Freeman.

  • Purpose: This study compared maternal age at childbirth, the number of live births, and the weight of live births between Korean women and immigrant women using statistical data from the Republic of Korea for the period of 2008-2018. Methods: The analysis was conducted using data from the Microdata Integrated Service of Statistics Korea (https://mdis.kostat.go.kr/index.do). Results: Korean women and immigrant women showed a higher age at childbirth in 2018 than in 2008. The percentage of newborns of Korean women with a birth weight of less than 2.5 kg increased slightly for 3 consecutive years from 2016 to 2018, whereas for immigrant women, this percentage increased in 2017 compared to 2016 and then decreased again in 2018. Very low birth weight (less than 1.5 kg) became more common among immigrant women from 2016 to 2018. Birth at a gestational age of fewer than 37 weeks increased both among Korean and immigrant women from 2016 to 2018. In both groups, the percentage of women who had their first child within their first 2 years of marriage decreased from 2008 to 2018. Conclusion: Immigrant women had higher birth rates than Korean women, while both groups showed an increasing trend in preterm birth. Greater attention should be paid to the pregnancy and birth needs of immigrant women, and steps are needed to ensure health equity and access in order to prevent preterm births. It is also necessary to identify factors that affect preterm birth and birth of very low birth weight infants among immigrant women in the future.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify maternal, infant, and perinatal mortality using the national population data of South Korea between 2018 and 2020, and to analyze mortality rates according to characteristics such as age, date of death, and cause of death in each group. This study updates the most recent study using 2009 to 2017 data. Methods: Analyses of maternal, infant, and perinatal mortality were done with data identified through the supplementary investigation system for cases of death from the Census of Population Dynamics data provided by Statistics Korea from 2018 to 2020. Results: Between 2018 and 2020, a total of 99 maternal deaths, 2,427 infant deaths, and 2,408 perinatal deaths were identified from 901,835 live births. The maternal mortality ratio was 11.3 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2018; it decreased to 9.9 in 2019 but increased again to 11.8 in 2020. The maternal mortality ratio increased steeply in women over the age of 40 years. An increasing trend in the maternal mortality ratio was found for complications related to the puerperium and hypertensive disorders. Both infant and perinatal mortality continued to decrease, from 2.8 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 2.5 in 2020 and from 2.8 in 2018 to 2.5 in 2020, respectively. Conclusion: Overall, the maternal, infant, and perinatal mortality statistics showed improvements. However, more attention should be paid to women over 40 years of age and specific causes of maternal deaths, which should be taken into account in Korea's maternal and child health policies.

  • Many researches have been devoted to the small area estimation related with the area level statistics. Almost all of the small area estimation methods are derived based on minimization of mean squared error(MSE). Recently Hwang and Shin (2008) suggested an alternative small area estimation method by minimizing mean squared percentage error. In this paper we apply this small area estimation method to the labor statistics, especially monthly wages by a branch area of labor department. The Monthly Labor Survey data (2007) is used for analysis and comparison of these methods.

  • The purpose of the labor statistics survey is to collect materials on employment, wages and the working time and to analyze the trend of the labor situation. in this research, the stratification variables are industry and the size of establishment. The sample are selected by stratified one stage sampling method in order to produce the reliable estimates of labor statistics. For local labor statistics, we design the sample survey using the city and province as sub-population. So we are able to produce the local area estimates of labor statistics with respect to industry and the size of establishment.
