The Monte Carlo simulation requires very much time to obtain a result of acceptable accuracy. Therefore we should know the optimum number of history not to sacrifice time as well as the accuracy. In this study, we have investigated the effects of statistical uncertainties of the photon dose calculation. BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc systems were used for the Monte Carlo dose calculation and the case of mediastinum was simulated. The several dose calculation result from various number of histories had been obtained and analyzed using the criteria of isodose curve comparison, dose volume histogram comparison(DVH) and root mean-square differences(RMSD). Statistical uncertainties were observed most evidently in isodose curve comparison and RMSD while DVHs were less sensitive. The acceptable uncertainties $(\bar{{\Delta}D})$ of the Monte Carlo photon dose calculation for the radiation therapy were estimated within total 9% error or 1% error for over than $D_{max}/2$ voxels or voxels at maximum dose.

Main objective of the present study is to determine the statistical properties and suitable probability distribution functions of spectral displacements from nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis within the frame work of Monte Carlo simulation for typical low rise and high rise RC framed buildings located in zone III and zone V and designed as per Indian seismic codes. Probabilistic analysis of spectral displacement is useful for strength assessment and loss estimation. To the author's knowledge, no study is reported in literature on comparison of spectral displacement including the uncertainties in capacity and demand in Indian context. In the present study, uncertainties in capacity of the building is modeled by choosing cross sectional dimensions of beams and columns, density and compressive strength of concrete, yield strength and elastic modulus of steel and, live load as random variables. Uncertainty in demand is modeled by choosing peak ground acceleration (PGA) as a random variable. Nonlinear static analysis (NSA) and nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) are carried out for typical low rise and high rise reinforced concrete framed buildings using IDARC 2D computer program with the random sample input parameters. Statistical properties are obtained for spectral displacements corresponding to performance point from NSA and maximum absolute roof displacement from NDA and suitable probability distribution functions viz., normal, Weibull, lognormal are examined for goodness-of-fit. From the hypothesis test for goodness-of-fit, lognormal function is found to be suitable to represent the statistical variation of spectral displacement obtained from NSA and NDA.
Because of the inevitable uncertainties such as structural parameters, external excitations and measurement noises, the effects of uncertainties should be taken into consideration in structural damage detection. In this paper, two probabilistic structural damage detection approaches are proposed to account for the underlying uncertainties in structural parameters and external excitation. The first approach adopts the statistical moment-based structural damage detection (SMBDD) algorithm together with the sensitivity analysis of the damage vector to the uncertain parameters. The approach takes the advantage of the strength SMBDD, so it is robust to measurement noise. However, it requests the number of measured responses is not less than that of unknown structural parameters. To reduce the number of measurements requested by the SMBDD algorithm, another probabilistic structural damage detection approach is proposed. It is based on the integration of structural damage detection using temporal moments in each time segment of measured response time history with the sensitivity analysis of the damage vector to the uncertain parameters. In both approaches, probability distribution of damage vector is estimated from those of uncertain parameters based on stochastic finite element model updating and probabilistic propagation. By comparing the two probability distribution characteristics for the undamaged and damaged models, probability of damage existence and damage extent at structural element level can be detected. Some numerical examples are used to demonstrate the performances of the two proposed approaches, respectively.

In recent years, the finite element method has become one of the most popular numerical technique for obtaining solutions of engineering science problems. However, there exist various uncertainties in modeling the problems, such as the dimensions(geometry shape), the material properties, boundary conditions, etc. The consideration for the uncertainties inherent in the problems can be made by understanding the influences of uncertain parameters[1]. Determining the influences of uncertainties as statistical quantities using the standard finite element method requires enormous computing time, while the probabilistic finite element method is realized as an efficient scheme[2,3] yielding statistical solution with just a few direct computations. In this paper, a formulation of the probabilistic fluid-structure interaction problem accounting for the first order perturbation of geometric shape is derived, and especially probabilistical acoustic pressure scattering from the structure with surrounding fluid is focused on. In Section 2, governing equations for the fluid-structure problems are given. In Section 3, a finite element formulation, based on the functional, is presented. First order perturbation of geometric shape with randomness is incorporated into the finite element formulation in conjunction with discretization of the random fields in Section 4 and 5. Finally, the proposed formulation is applied to a acoustic pressure scattering problem from an infinitely long cylindrical shell structure with randomness of radial perturbation.
We have examined how sensitively the extinction value determined by the method of star-count depends on such factors as the plate limit, the size of counting reseau, the non-linearity in the number distribution of stars with magnitude, and the angular resolution demanded by the given problem. We let the Poisson distribution portray the statistical nature of the countings, and chose the region containing the globule Barnard 361 as an example field. Uncertainties due to various combinations of the factors are presented in graphic forms: (1) Dynamic range in the extinction measurements is evaluated as a function of reseau size for varying plate limits. (2) Statistical errors involved in the star-count are analized in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio, the plate limit and the reseau size. (3) Systematic error due to the non-linearity in the number distribution are thoroughly analized. (4) Finally, a methodology is presented for correcting the systematic error in the observed radial density gradient. These graphs are meant to be used in selecting proper size of the reseau and in estimating errors inherent to the star-count analysis.
The experimental fission cross-section data of U-238, Np-237 and Th-232, published up to the end of 1970, are reviewed and analyzed between their respective thresholds and 20.0 MeV. The results of a statistical analysis of the available data, performed with a weighted Least-squares Orthogonal Polynomial Pitting computer programme are presented in the form of point-wise cross-section values together with their uncertainties, and in the form of graphs of the fitted curves with an indication of a region of 95% statistical confidence level. An estimate of the fission spectrum weighted average cross-sections and their respective uncertainties is also given.
Hybrid simulation (HS) has attracted community attention in recent years as an efficient and effective experimental technique for structural performance evaluation in size-limited laboratories. Traditional hybrid simulations usually take deterministic properties for their numerical substructures therefore could not account for inherent uncertainties within the engineering structures to provide probabilistic performance assessment. Reliable structural performance evaluation, therefore, calls for stochastic hybrid simulation (SHS) to explicitly account for substructure uncertainties. The experimental design of SHS is explored in this study to account for uncertainties within analytical substructures. Both computational simulation and laboratory experiments are conducted to evaluate the pseudo-random Sobol sequence for the experimental design of SHS. Meta-modeling through polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is established from a computational simulation of a nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to evaluate the influence of nonlinear behavior and ground motions uncertainties. A series of hybrid simulations are further conducted in the laboratory to validate the findings from computational analysis. It is shown that the Sobol sequence provides a good starting point for the experimental design of stochastic hybrid simulation. However, nonlinear structural behavior involving stiffness and strength degradation could significantly increase the number of hybrid simulations to acquire accurate statistical estimation for the structural response of interests. Compared with the statistical moments calculated directly from hybrid simulations in the laboratory, the meta-model through PCE gives more accurate estimation, therefore, providing a more effective way for uncertainty quantification.
Reactor containment buildings serve as the last barrier to prevent radioactive leakage due to accidents and their safety is crucial in overpressurization conditions. Thus, the Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.216 has mentioned the global strain as one of failure criteria in the free-field for cylindrical prestressed concrete containment vessels (PCCV) subject to internal pressure. However, there is a limit that RG 1.216 shows the free-field without the specific locations of failure criteria and also the global strain corresponding to only azimuth 135° has been mentioned in NUREG/CR-6685, regardless of the elevations of the structure. Therefore, in order to reevaluate the failure criteria of the 1:4 scaled PCCV, the high fidelity simulation model based on the experimental test was significantly validated in this study, and it was interesting to find that the experimental and numerical result was very close to each other. In addition, for the consideration of the material uncertainties, the Latin hypercube method was used as a statistical approach. Consequently, it was revealed that the radial displacements of various azimuth area such as 120°, 135°, 150°, 180° and 210° at elevations 4680 mm and 6,200 mm can represent as the global deformation at the free-field, obtained from the statistical approach.

This paper introduces the status of and issues related to the PSHA (Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis) of Korean Nuclear Power Plant sites. PSHA was first introduced to the nuclear industry in the mid-1980s. The Korean PSHA is based on Cornell and accommodates the modem approach for eliciting expertise and statistical treatment. Due to the low seismicity in Korea, large uncertainties exist in the PSHA database including seismic source maps, seismicity parameters of seismic sources, and attenuation formulae. Though research in seismology, geology, and earthquake engineering since the mid-1990s has significantly reduced uncertainties, a considerable amount still exists. Considering the low seismicity of the Korean Peninsula, especially the lack of strong motion data, further reduction will take several decades.
System identification and damage detection for structural health monitoring have received considerable attention. Various time domain analysis methodologies based on measured vibration data of structures have been proposed. Among them, recursive least-squares estimation of structural parameters which is also known as parametric Kalman filter (PKF) approach has been studied. However, the conventional PKF requires that all the external excitations (inputs) be available. On the other hand, structural uncertainties are inevitable for civil infrastructures, it is necessary to develop approaches for probabilistic damage detection of structures. In this paper, a parametric Kalman filter with unknown inputs (PKF-UI) is proposed for the simultaneous identification of structural parameters and the unmeasured external inputs. Analytical recursive formulations of the proposed PKF-UI are derived based on the conventional PKF. Two scenarios of linear observation equations and nonlinear observation equations are discussed, respectively. Such a straightforward derivation of PKF-UI is not available in the literature. Then, the proposed PKF-UI is utilized for probabilistic damage detection of structures by considering the uncertainties of structural parameters. Structural damage index and the damage probability are derived from the statistical values of the identified structural parameters of intact and damaged structure. Some numerical examples are used to validate the proposed method.
