  • Predicting individual traits and diseases from genetic variants is critical to fulfilling the promise of personalized medicine. The genetic variants from genome-wide association studies (GWAS), including variants well below GWAS significance, can be aggregated into highly significant predictions across a wide range of complex traits and diseases. The recent arrival of large-sample public biobanks enables highly accurate polygenic predictions based on genetic variants across the whole genome. Various statistical methodologies and diverse computational tools have been introduced and developed to computed the polygenic risk score (PRS) more accurately. However, many researchers utilize PRS tools without a thorough understanding of the underlying model and how to specify the parameters for the best performance. It is advantageous to study the statistical models implemented in computational tools for PRS estimation and the formulas of parameters to be specified. Here, we review a variety of recent statistical methodologies and computational tools for PRS computation.

  • Purpose: This study compared the shear bond strength of heat pressed and feldspathic porcelain to metal. Through thermocycling, the clinical aspect of heat pressed porcelain fused metal was estimated. Materials and Methods: 90 non-precious metal specimens were made ($4{\times}4{\times}8 mm$) and divided to three groups. All spicimens were treated and built-up with the porcelain ($4{\times}4{\times}3 mm$) by 2 different methods according to group: Group I: $Inspiration^{(R)}$, Group II: Ivoclar, IPS $Inline^{(R)}PoM$, Group III: GC Initial IQ-One $Body^{(R)}PoM$. The half of each group's specimens were thermocycled. All specimens' shear bond strength were measured by Instron universal testing machine. Exact measuring point was far 1 mm from porcelain/metal interface to the porcelain side. For the statistical analysis, 2-way ANOVA was used. Results: In no-thermocycling specimens, the shear bond strength showed no statistical significance between each group (P > 0.05). In comparison between nothermocycling and thermocycling specimens in each group, the shear bond strength was decreased according to thermocycling, but there was no statistical significance (P > 0.05). In thermocycling specimens, there was no statistical significance between each group (P > 0.05). Conclusion: In feldspathic porcelain and other two types heat pressed porcelain, there was no statistical difference in the shear bond strength of porcelain to metal. The heat pressed porcelain seems to be clinically useful for the aspect of the shear bond strength.

  • The statistical experiment method is employed to optimize the deposition condition of Co film with DC magnetron sputtering process. The statistical treatment results showed the significance value below 0.05, low RMS error and R-sq value close to 1, which implied that our experiment and design were very reliable. We found that the sheet resistance decreased to -1.83Ω/$\square$ with the deposition temperature, increased to 11.17Ω/$\square$ with the deposition pressure, and decreased into -0.65Ω/$\square$ with the DC power. We also confirmed that the sheet resistance uniformity was mainly influenced by the deposition temperature as it decreased -4.04% at the temperature range of 25$\^{C}$∼147$\^{C}$. Finally, we report that the optimum condition of Co film using our statistical method of design of experiment is the deposition temperature of 25$\^{C}$, the deposition pressure of 12mTorr, and the DC power of 1500W.

  • This study is to estimate the recent changes in total factor productivity of 15 Korean adjacent water fisheries based on Malmquist productivity indices. The study adopted both input and output oriented productivity measures utilizing a hyperbola distance function. In addition to this point, the study also calculated the 95% confidence interval for the various components of the productivities in order to access the statistical significance of estimates using 2000 times of re-sampling process through the smoothed bootstraping. The results of the study showed us that there was 18% reduction in the overall total factor productivity during the study period from 2007 to 2011, which turned out to be 5% of annual decrease in productivity. The study found that the main reason of this decrease in total productivity is about 22% downward shift of a fisheries production function due to recent conditions of a devastated fishing ground. When we evaluated the statistical significance of changes in technical efficiency combining both pure technical and scale efficiency based on the 95% confidence intervals, we could not find any evidence of changes in those components of total factor productivity. When we accessed the productivity of the each of 15 adjacent water fisheries methods, only the large danish seine fisheries showed us about 7% increase in productivity. Even though the large trawling and the large tow-boat trawling revealed no changes in productivity, all of the other 12 fisheries suffered the decreases in productivities.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the effect of vibration exercises generated from an $XCO^{(R)}$ trainer on supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and deltoid muscle thickness. Methods: Thirty subjects were evenly divided into two groups. Muscle thickness was measured by a sonogram prior to the study, and at three and six weeks after the intervention. Changes in muscle thickness were analyzed using a repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA). The significance level for the statistical test was set at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: A statistically significant differences in timing, interactions between timing and the groups, and between-group changes were demonstrated for supraspinatus muscle thickness (p<0.05). A similar finding was reported for infraspinatus, teres minor, and deltoid muscles with regard to the interactions between timing and the groups (p<0.05), although the between-group change did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05). Conclusion: Significant changes were observed in the thickness of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and deltoid muscles, owing to the use of vibration exercises generated from an $XCO^{(R)}$ trainer. These findings can be used as a foundation for future studies on rehabilitation training.
