  • In this study the distribution patterns of the metallic components were analyzed both before and after the Asian Dust (AD) events at 2001 by comparing the chemical composition of metallic components in terms of various statistical methods. According to the AD/NAD concentration ratio of metallic components, the main components of crustal soils were exhibiting the values above 1.0; but opposite results were seen dominantly for hazardous metallic components. Examination of fine-to-coarse (F/C) ratios of metallic components showed higher values for major anthropogenic components including Pb (5.83). Ni (2.61), etc. Comparison of our measurement data with those obtained within and across the Korean peninsula indicated that the metallic distribution patterns of the study area can be distinguished from previous studies. The results of our analysis, when investigated in relation with air mass movement patterns. indicated evidence of the direct influence of AD events and anthropogenic processes.

  • This study was to investigate the effects of upper and lower limb composing patterns of PNF(proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) on the static balance ability by 20 subjects for 6 weeks. This study was measured left one leg standing and right one leg standing with closed eyes on Good Balance system. These results led us to the conclusion that the mean speed of X, Y direction, COP(center of Pressure) velocity moment showed a statistical decrease when applying post-exercise. The above results from this study indicated that upper and lower limb composing patterns of PNF exercise has improved the static balance ability. As a result, this study showed that upper and lower limb composing patterns exercise improve the ability of balance in young adults. Based on this study, it may be applied to old people.

  • Energy demand characteristics of hotel, hospital, and office building are compared to provide guidelines for combining building in community energy system design. The annual, monthly, and daily energy demand patterns for electricity, heating, hot water and cooling are qualitatively compared and important features are delineated based on the energy demand models. Key statistical values such as the mean, the maximum are also provided. Important features of the hourly demand patterns are summarized for weekdays and weekends. Substantial variations in both magnitudes and patterns are observed among the 3 building types and smart grouping or combination of building type and size is essential for a successive energy supply.

  • We investigate the latent stage-sequential patterns of drinking behaviors of U.S. adolescents who have started to drink by age 14 years (seven years before the legal drinking age). A multiple-group latent transition analysis(LTA) with logistic regression is employed to identify the subsequent patterns of drinking behaviors among early-onset drinkers. A sample of 1407 early-onset adolescents from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth(NLSY97) is analyzed using maximum-likelihood estimation. The analysis demonstrates that early-onset adolescents' drinking behaviors can be represented by four latent classes and their prevalence and transition are influenced by demographic factors of gender, age, and race.

  • The researches on cyclical patterns of R&D investment has a long history in developed economies since the Schumpeterian hypothesis that long-term productivity-enhancing innovative activities increase during recession. But in Korea the cyclical patterns of R&D investment is one of the unexplored academic areas. Unlike theoretical explanation of R&D's cyclical pattern, empirical results has shown that R&D investment is procyclical to business cycles in developed countries. This paper investigates whether Korean R&D investment show procyclical or countercyclical pattern to business cycles. The empirical results show that Korean R&D investment in private area is procyclical to business cycles with statistical significance, which confirms the credit-constraint theory's prediction, while public area's is not sensitive to them. Public R&D investment has long-term investment characteristics and can be utilized to stabilize procyclically-fluctuating private R&D investment.

  • The author has been teaching with an instructional module consisting of many mathematical concepts, based on designs formed by personal names or words to arouse students' interesting in learning mathematics. This module has been growing since it was first used as a supplementary lesson for calculus students. Now it consists of concepts that connect with mathematical topics such as number sense, algebraic thinking, geometry, and statistical reasoning, as well as other subjects such as art and quilt design. With its content we can provide our students the basic mathematical knowledge needed for further study in their own fields. In this article, we will demonstrate the latest development of this instructional module, which makes connections between mathematical knowledge and the design of personal quilt patterns. We will exhibit a 'Quilt of Nations' which consists of the designed quilt blocks of different countries, such as USA, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and others, as well as a quilt design using the abbreviation of this seminar. Then we will talk about how the connections are built, and how to design these mathematically rich, uniquely created, beautifully designed, and personalized quilt block patterns.

  • The driving patterns in Seoul metropolitan area were surveyed in an experiment involving 1,212km of driving along seventeen representative routes. The speed and fuel consumption data were recorded and the influence of driving patterns on vehicle fuel economy was analyzed by statistical techniques. The results showed that characteristics of driving in Seoul metropolitan area are far different from that of CVS-75 mode and then on-road fuel economy in Seoul may be small as compared with that of CVS-75 mode. Finally, it was proposed that CVS-75 mode fuel economy should be modified by applying adjustment factor to represent actual on-road fuel economy.

  • From the mathematical and statistical point of view, a segment of a DNA strand can be viewed as a sequence of four-state (A, C, G, T) trials. Herein, we consider the distributions of runs and patterns related to the run lengths of multi-state sequences, especially for four states (A, B, C, D). Let X1, X2, . . . be a sequence of four state independent and identically distributed trials taking values in the set 𝒢 = {A, B, C, D}. In this study, we obtain exact formulas for the probability distribution function for the discrete distribution of runs of B's of order k. We obtain longest run statistics, shortest run statistics, and determine the distributions of waiting times and run lengths.

  • Different high-throughput chip technologies are available for genome-wide gene expression studies. Quality control and prescreening analysis are important for rigorous analysis on each type of gene expression data. Statistical significance evaluation of differential expression patterns is needed. Major genome institutes develop database and analysis systems for information sharing of precious expression data.

  • Statistical downscaled surface temperature datasets by employing the cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function (CSEOF) analysis and multiple linear regression method are examined. For evaluating the efficiency of this statistical downscaling method, monthly surface temperature of the ECMWF has been downscaled into monthly temperature having a fine spatial scale of ~20km over the Korean peninsula for the 1973-2000 period. Monthly surface temperature of the ECHOG has also been downscaled into the same spatial scale data for the same period. Comparisons of temperatures between two datasets over the Korean peninsula show that annual mean temperature of the ECMWF is about $2^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the ECHOG. After applying to the statistical downscaling method, the difference of two annual mean temperatures reduces less than $1^{\circ}C$ and their spatial patterns become even close to each other. Future downscaled data shows that annual temperatures in the A1B scenario will increase by $3.5^{\circ}C$ by the late 21st century. The downscaled data are influenced by the ECHOG as well as observation data which includes effects of complicated topography and the heat island.
