  • Arches are one of the most important basic structural units as well as the beams, columns and plates. Most complicated structures consist of only these basic units and therefore it is very attractive research subject to analysis both the static and dynamic behavior of such units including the arches. This study deals with the free vibration of arbitrary shaped arches. In order to obtain the exactly arch shape, which surveyed (x, y) of neutral axis of arbitrary shaped arches are compared to various shape of arch: circular, parabolic, sinusoidal, elliptic, spiral and cartenary. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are merely adopted in the open literature rather than deriving the equations in this study. The Taylor series method is used as the numerical differential scheme. The Runge-Kutta method and the Regula-Falsi method, respectively, are used to integrate the governing differential equations and to compute the natural frequencies It is expected that results obtained herein can be practically utilized in the fields of vibration control.

  • A deployable missile control fin has some structural nonlinearities because of the worn or loose hinges and the manufacturing tolerance. The structural nonlinearity cannot be eliminated completely, and exerts significant effects on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Thus, It is important to establish the accurate deployable missile control fin model. In the present study, the nonlinear dynamic model of 4he deployable missile control fin is developed using a substructure synthesis method. The deployable missile control fin can be subdivided Into two substructures represented by linear dynamic models and a nonlinear hinge with structural nonlinearities. The nonlinear hinge model is established by using a system identification method, and the substructure modes are improved using the Frequency Response Method. A substructure synthesis method Is expanded to couple the substructure models and the nonlinear hinge model, and the nonlinear dynamic model of the fin is developed. Finally, the established nonlinear dynamic model of the deployable missile control fin is verified by dynamic tests. The established model is In good agreement with test results, showing that the present approach is useful in aeroelastic stability analyses such as time-domain nonlinear flutter analysis.

  • The phase inductance of a switch reluctance motor (SRM) is significantly nonlinear. With different saturation conditions, the phase inductance shape is clearly changed. This study focuses on the relationship between coefficient and current in an inductance model with ignored harmonics above the order of 3. A position estimation method based on the variable coefficient inductance model is proposed in this paper. A four-quadrant sensorless control system of the SRM drive is constructed based on the relationship between variable coefficient inductance and rotor position. The proposed algorithms are implemented in an experimental SRM test setup. Experimental results show that the proposed method estimates position accurately in operating two/four-quadrants. The entire system also has good static and dynamic performance.

  • The vehicle attitude and sideslip is critical information to control the vehicle to prevent from unintended motion. Many of estimation strategy use bicycle model or IMU integration, but both of them have limits on application. The main purpose of this paper is development of vehicle orientation estimator which is robust to various vehicle state and road shape. The suggested estimator use 3-axis magnetometer, yaw rate sensor and lateral acceleration sensor to estimate three Euler angles of vehicle. The estimator is composed of two individual observers: First, comparing the known magnetic field and gravity with measured value, the TRIAD algorithm calculates optimal rotational matrix when vehicle is in static or quasi-static condition. Next, merging 3-axis magnetometer with inertial sensors, the extended Kalman filter is used to estimate vehicle orientation under dynamic condition. A validation through simulation tools, Carsim and Simulink, is performed and the results show the feasibility of the suggested estimation method.

  • In order to reduce vibration or to control shape of structures made of metal or composites, piezoelectric materials have been extensively used since their discovery in 1880's. A recent trend is also seen to apply piezoelectric materials to flexible structures made of rubber-like materials. In this paper a non-linear finite element model using updated Lagrangian (UL) approach has been developed for static analysis of rubber-elastic material with surface-bonded piezoelectric patches. A compressible stain energy function has been used for modeling the rubber as hyperelastic material. For formulation of the nonlinear finite element model a twenty-node brick element is used. Four degrees of freedom u, v and w and electrical potential ${\varphi}$ per node are considered as the field variables. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) patches are applied as sensors/actuators or sensors and actuators. The present model has been applied to bimorph PVDF cantilever beam to validate the formulation. It is then applied to study the smart rubber components under different boundary and loading conditions. The results predicted by the present formulation are compared with the analytical solutions as well as the available published results. Some results are given as new ones as no published solutions available in the literatures to the best of the authors' knowledge.

  • We have observed the orientation behavior of acicular iron oxides in magnetic layer of the particular magnetic tape after magnetic paint was coated on polyester film. As results of the static orientation, orientation of iron oxides come to the maximum at the front and the back of orientation magnets, but it was a litter lower at the back than at the front, and it slowly decreases and come to the constant level after passing through the orientation magnets. In case of edge portion to be futher away from center in the coated film, the orientation of iron oxides in magnetic layer come to worse than that of the center. We think it is owing to the shape and the magnetic magnitude of orientation magnets. The results of the dynamic orientation are as follows. As the orientation of iron oxides in the particulated magnetic tape is higher, the output properties of tape come to better than ever. And the orientation of iron oxides can be changed by drying condition, as result, the output properties of tape can be also. Therefore we think the considrations of the design of orientation magnets and the control of drying condition are needed to improve output properties of the particulated magnetic tape.

  • Thickness profiled blank is designed using optimization techniques for maximizing the bulged heights during the free bulging of Inconel 718. The thickness of the blank was described by the Bezier curve and the locations of the control points were used as the design variables for optimization. The maximization of the bulged heights within the limited strain range served as the objective function and constraints for optimization. The equivalent static loads method for non-linear static response structural optimization (ESLSO) was used and the result of the optimization revealed 22 increased bulged heights. A free bulging test using a blank with an optimized profile was conducted to verify the optimization process. The results were compared with those of numerical analysis in terms of bulged height and deformed shape.

  • This paper describes the analysis of the oscillometric method based on the shape of arterial pressure and proposal of a new algorithm for estimating the blood pressure by computer simulation. In the first step, the arterial pressure model which is able to control the shape of arterial pressure was designed and then we simulated the oscillometric model using both the existing exponential model showing the static arterial pressure-volume relation and the designed arterial pressure model. By analyzing the correlation of characteristic ratio based on the shape of arterial pressure, we could find that the characteristic ratio was not the only standard parameter for estimating systolic and diastolic pressure. We were able to estimate the shape of arterial pressure by computing the correlation of arterial pressure shape with oscillation shape. Finally, we proposed an algorithm which is able to estimate systolic and diastolic pressure according to pressure(Pp) table constructed from the relation of maximum amplitude of oscillation and arterial pressure shape. We tested 60 arterial pressure waveforms having various arterial pressure shape and pulse. As a results, the absolute deviation average values of the estimation of systolic, diastolic and mean pressure were 1.62%, 2.40% and 2.20%, respectively. In conclusions, the proposed algorithm showed the possibility of usefullness in estimating the blood pressure.

  • A non-contact sensor for detecting distance from field surface to a predetermined location of a tractor will be useful to control precise height of implements such as tillage machinery, mowers etc.. An optical and an ultrasonic sensors were designed and fabricated . The indoor and outdoor experiments were conducted to obtain the static and dynamic characteristics of the two sensors at several moisture levels of four soils and on the soil surface with a designed shape. The results revealed that the optical sensor is unsuitable for soils with high moisture content but showed better detecting accuracy on the irregularity of soil surface.

  • In this study, the dynamic flying characteristics of the worn head sliders are investigated theoretically due to the change in head geometry caused by head and disk contact. The film shapes can be approximated as taper- truncated cycloidal-flat film. Two-dimensional time dependent modified Reynolds equation included molecular slip effect are formulated with neglected the roughness effect. The motion of head slider was assumed to have two degree of freedom in this work. Finite difference approximation with Newton Raphson iterative technique and the fourth order Runge-Kutta method were implemented to obtain the transient response of the slider head with various change in head geometry numerically and compared with the transient response of the IBM3380 type head slider. The simulation results show the film shape has affects significantly on the static and dynamic characteristic of slider head in magnetic storage systems.
