  • This paper investigates the effects of tunnelling-induced ground movements on nearby structures, considering soil-structure interactions of different ground (loose sand, dense sand, soft clay, stiff clay) and construction conditions (ground loss). The response of four-story block structures, which are subjected to tunnelling-induced ground movements, has been investigated in different ground and construction conditions (ground loss) using numerical analysis. The structures for numerical analysis has been modelled using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The response of four-story block structures has been investigated with a ground movement magnitude and compared in terms of ground and construction conditions (ground loss) considering the magnitude of deformations and cracks in structures. In addition, the damage levels, which are possibly induced in structures, has been provided in terms of ground and construction conditions (ground loss) using the state of strain damage estimation criterion (Son and Cording, 2005). The results of this study will provide a background for better understandings for controlling and minimizing building damage on nearby structures due to tunnelling-induced ground movements.

  • The number of old concrete structure which needs to be strengthened has been increased. The repair and strengthening methods have to be determined based on the current status of the structure. Consequently the estimation method for the damage status of the structure has been desperately needed, but no studies have been tried to use the crack and deflection characteristics to estimate the damage status. In this study, the crack characteristics depending on load level were measured and analysed. The crack characteristics observed from 11 samples were compared with damage status, and load level, The crack characteristics examined in this study include crack number, crack length, crack range, crack interval, maximum crack length, crack area, and average crack length. The deflections were normalized based on yield deflection, and the relationship between the relative deflection and the standardized crack characteristics were compared. Among the crack characteristics, crack interval, crack area, crack range, and maximum crack length, have been showed a close relationship to the relative deflection. Therefore, if such crack characteristics are evaluated, the maximum load applied to the structure is believed to be estimated. if additional parameters such as size of specimen, strength of concrete and steel, and steel ratio are studied, the damage status of structure can be estimated more accurately.

  • The vehicle exterior design is the main parameter of aerodynamic wind noise, but the modification of it is nearly impossible at a proto-type stage. Therefore, it is very important to verify exterior design and estimate the correct wind noise level at the early vehicle design stages. The numerical simulations of aerodynamic wind noises around A-pillar and wiper were developed for specific vehicle exterior designs, but could not be directly used for the discussions with designers because these need complex modeling and simulation process. This study proposes new approach to A-pillar and wiper wind noise estimation at design stage using response surface methodology of modeFRONTIER, of which database is composed of PowerFLOW simulation, PowerCLAY modeling, SEA-Baced (Statistical Energy Analysis-Based) interior noise simulation, and turbulent acoustic power simulation. New design parameters are defined and their contributions are analyzed. A state-of-the-art, easy and reliable CAT (Computer Aided Test) tool for A-pillar and wiper wind noise are acquired from this study, which shows high usefulness in car development.

  • Groundwater recharge rates were estimated and compared in a headwater catchment at the Gwangneung Supersite using three different methods: water-table fluctuation (WTF), mass balance, and hydrograph separation techniques. Data were obtained during the rainy season from June to September 2005. Two different WTF methods estimated the groundwater recharge rate as 25.9% and 23.6%. The mass balance calculation of chloride ions indicated recharge rates of 13.4% on average. Baseflow separation using chloride ion as a tracer from six storm hydrographs produced a 14.0% net baseflow rate on average. Because of the implicit assumption of a long-term steady state without storage change, recharge rates calculated by mass balance and hydrograph separation were smaller than those done with WTF methods, which include the amount of increased storage due to the water-level rise. Subsequently, the WTF method is superior to others in the estimation of groundwater recharge rate to comprehend the dynamic characteristics of the hydrologic cycle.

  • The covered interest rate parity condition (CIRP) has been widely used in open macroeconomic analysis, risk management, exchange rate forecasts, and so forth. Due to the recent global financial crises, there have been remarkable changes in the financial markets of the emerging markets. These changes possibly influenced the dynamics of the covered interest rate parity condition. In this paper, we investigate whether the CIRP dynamics has changed, and what is the nature of the regime changes. To do this, we propose and estimate multiple-state Markov regime switching models using a Bayesian MCMC method. Our estimation results indicate that the default risk or the deviation from the CIRP has been decreased after the crisis. It seems to be associated with the more active interaction between the short-term bond market and the short-term foreign exchange market than before. The tightened relation of these two financial markets is caused by the arbitrage transaction of foreign investors.

  • The baseline distribution of a structure represents the statistical distribution of dynamic response feature from the healthy state of the structure. Generally, damage-sensitive dynamic response feature of a structure manifest themselves near the tail of a baseline statistical distribution. In this regard, some researchers have paid attention to extreme value distribution for modeling the tail of a baseline distribution. However, few researches have been conducted to theoretically understand the extreme value distribution from a perspective of statistical damage assessment. This study investigates the asymptotic convergence of domain of attraction in extreme value distribution through parameter estimation, which is needed for reliable statistical damage assessment. In particular, the asymptotic convergence of a domain of attraction is quantified with respect to the sample size out of which each extreme value is extracted. The effect of the sample size on false positive alarms in statistical damage assessment is quantitatively investigated as well. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerically simulated acceleration data on a two span continuous truss bridge.

  • When adapting the transmitter to the channel state information(CSI), improved transmission is possible compared to the open loop system where no CSI is provided at the transmitter. However, since the perfect channel information is rarely available at the transmitter, the system design based on the partial CSI becomes an important factor. Especially, in mobile environments, the consideration for the outdated CSI should be applied for mitigating the performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a robust adaptive modulation and coding scheme for bit-interleaved coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing over time-varying channels. With reasonable feedback overhead, the proposed scheme shows the enhanced performance by compensating for the outdated CSI due to Doppler spread. Simulation results confirm that the performance gain is achieved by applying an accurate BER estimation method.

  • In this paper, fatigue tests are conducted for the specimens with longitudinal and transverse attachment under variable amplitude axial loading based on storm model. Considered loadings include repeated single storm, 6 or 8 storms randomly, and storms including calm sea condition while the mean stress and the maximum stress of loadings are changed. The effect of three variables are investigated; root mean square(RMS) value of stress amplitude, mean stress shift and maximum stress, which can characterize storm loading on fatigue life. In addition, experiments including calm sea loading are also carried out to investigate the effect of calm sea state. Test results are evaluated and compared with DNV-CN2005 and Matsuoka's method for the estimation of crack initiation and propagation life. To verify the validity of the criteria, the measured crack initiation lifes are compared with the specific crack length 15mm, which are calculated with beach marks.

  • This study addresses the topic of suitability analysis for helping with land use planning, which is one of important decision-making in urban planning, utilizing geographic information system. Covering the Kumi City before integrating with neighbor county, the site suitabilities for land uses, which are categorized into residential, commercial, industrial and green, were analyzed using the overlay method based upon the database constructed for this study. In the process, assessment criteria which include environmental factors and relative weights were determined and also the land use/cover map and NDVI map which were generated through satellite image processing were included in the database. The suitability maps by four function spaces were derived according to the grade and compared with the present land use state and the land use concept map of urban master plan. For more accurate analysis, practical developing plan, land price data, soil data should be included. Also if the demand estimation data by each land use had been added, the reliability of location allocation could have been raised.
