  • Objective : This study was designed to examine the effects of orally administered Prunus persica water extract (PPE), which is used as herbal medicine, for treatment of Yu Xue (stasis of blood) and tacrine on the basal concentration of extracellular acetylcholine in the hippocampus of rats. Methods: To investigate the effects of PPE and tacrine on concentration of extracellular acetylcholine in the hippocampus of rats, the microdialysis technique, under the same experimental conditions, was used. And we used male Wistar rats which were 7 weeks of age and 210-290 g. PPE was extracted with boiling water, and the rats were anesthetized with pentobarbital Na. Their skulls were exposed and a hole was drilled for implantation of a microdialysis probe. In order to increase the recovery of acetylcholine, a probe with a long membrane was used. One day after surgery, the microdialysis probe was perfused with Ringer's solution at a flow rate of 1.5 l/min. The acetylcholine concentration in dialysis samples was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with electrochemical detection. AChE activity was measured using the radiometric method, as described by Sherman. Results : The comparative effects of PPE and tacrine on hippocampal extracellular acetylcholine concentration was that these cholinesterase inhibitors produced dose-dependent increases in the extracellular acetylcholine concentration. And the effect of PPE and tacrine on rat brain AChE activity was that PPE produced maximal inhibition at 1 h after administration, when AChE activity was 44% of the intact level. AChE activity gradually recovered thereafter, and reached 78% of the intact level at 12 h after administration. Conclusion : In this study, PPE has a potent activity and a long-lasting effect on the central cholinergic system, in terms of the basal concentration of extracellular acetylcholine in the hippocampus and the AChE activity in the brain of rats. And oral administration of PPE increased dose-dependently the basal concentration of extracellular acetylcholine in the hippocampus of rats. PPE may be one of the more useful cholinesterase inhibitors for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

  • This study was designed to investigate differences in some aspects of value conceptions in fundamentals of nursing functions between nursing service personnel and nurse-educators. The purpose of the study was to identify the difference of value conceptions between the hospital nurses and school instructors, to contribute as a reference in strengthening the educational program in establishing nay hinder professional growth. The questionaries of this study were focused in the following aspects: 1) establishment of nursing service management system, 2) strengthening of the professionalization of nursing service, 3) hindrance in accomplishment of independent nursing functions, 4) communication skills in nurse-patient relationship, 5) activities directly related to nursing care planning, 6) communication skills in nurse-doctor relationship, 7) attitude towards taking responsibilities for patient- centered nursing approach, and 8) nursing educational approach towards preparation of professional competence in practicing independent nursing functions. 265 graduate nurses from 14 general hospitals and 88 nursing instructors from 18 schools, collegiate and diploma, were sampled. The main findings of the study were as follows; 1. Both groups responded highly in the lack of public recognition of nursing profession and hospital administrators support in establishment of nursing service management system. Further investigation is needed to define some relationship between the intrinsic and extrinsic factors which might give influence to the professional development. 2. while hospital nursing personnel responded on environmental pressure such as a heavy nursing load as the factor giving hindrance to independent nursing functions, the nurse educators responded highly on lack of nursing competence of individual nurses. An emphasis should be placed on the development of nursing interaction through professional education. If the professional model is not well established, nursing function will be limited to medical assistance. 3. 3. The patient-centered approach for nurse-patient communication had given positive respond for both group, tut lacks in team concept in problem solving process. There exist a social distance between nurses and other professional co-workers in the hospital hierarchy. 4. It was indicated that, as an intrinsic factor in the development of nursing service and nursing education, building up a philosophical basis is an utmost importance. This question is opened for further and extensive study to clarify whether existence of philosophical absence or philosophical stasis in nursing profession hinders the development.

  • I examined and referred to literatures of every generations on the nicknames, causes, herb medications and acupucture treatments of ptosis(上胞下垂) And then the results were obtained as follows. 1. The nicknames of ptosis(上胞下垂) are hyumok(휴목), chimpung(侵風), geompye(瞼廢), geompisubok(瞼皮垂覆), posu(胞垂) and bigwon(脾倦) which corresponds to blepharoptosis in Western Medicine. 2. The congenital ptosis(上胞下垂) is mostly caused by innate disposition(稟賦不足). The acquired ptosis(上胞下垂) is mostly caused by Qi sinking of Tri-energizer(中氣下陷). And besides this, there are Blood stasis due to Qi stagnancy(氣滯血瘀), invasion of the eyelid by wind(風邪入絡), Qi and Blood deficiency(氣血不足), Phlegm syndrome due to wind(風痰阻絡), Wind syndrome due to Yang hypertrophy(陽亢動風) and Stagnation of Liver Qi(肝氣鬱結). 3. In herb medication of ptosis(上胞下垂), Bojungikgitang(補中益氣湯) was used 14 times most and its effects are nourishing the spleen to promote the flow of Qi(健脾益氣) and elevating the YangQi and activation the meridian(升陽活絡). In the following, Insamyangyeongtang(人蔘養榮湯) was done 6 times and has effects of promoting the Qi and activating the blood(益氣養血) and of promoting blood circulation and restoring flow(活血通絡). The next, Jungyongtang(正容湯) appeared 5 times and this can expel wind, resolve phlegm and restore flow(祛風滌痰通絡). As single herb, Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草) was used 66 times most. Besides this, there are a few herbs used many times like Rhizoma atractylodis macrocephalae(白朮), Radix angelicae gogantis(當歸), Radix ginseng(人蔘). Radix astragali(황기) and Rhizoma cimicifugae(升麻). 4. • Objectives : The objective of this review is to introduce the basic concepts on the febrile disease in the Mongolian Traditional Medicine(MTM). Methods : We comprehensively reviewed related textbooks in Mongolian and articles searched from China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) on febrile disease about MTM and summarized the pathophysiologic basis of, and treatment principles in MTM. Results and Conclusions : 1. In MTM, there are basic concepts such as theory of Arga-Bilig, theory of five elements, theory of three elements(人體三素), theory of seven constitutions and three discharges(七元三濊). Most of all, theory of three elements, which is about the basic elements of human body in MTM, is important fundamental notions for explaining human physiology and pathology. In MTM, It is explained that the imbalance of three elements, namely khii, shar, bad-kan is the root of all disease. Especially, febrile disease is treated by suppressing activated shar and blood(血液), which have fire characters, and managing various additional symptoms by balancing three elements and eliminating miasma(邪氣), inappropriate substances such as bile water(shar yc, 黃水) or blood stasis(惡血) simultaneously. 2. In MTM, both of internal treatment modalities(various medicinal therapy) and external treatment modalities(physical therapy) have been used for febrile disease. Food therapy and life style modification also have been recognized as important treatment methods. These aspects correspond to wholism theory of Korean Traditional Medicine(KTM). Further studies about details of each treatment methods will discover new applicable treatment method and make broaden the external boundaries of the KTM.
