  • Wolf-Rayet galaxies, galaxies which show spectral features produced by Wolf-Rayet stars, are thought to be the place of recent massive star formation since the Wolf-Rayet phase covers relatively short timescale in the life of massive O and B type stars. Studying these galaxies provides a unique chance to understand how massive star formation occurs in a galaxy within a short timescale. In this work, we present the intermediate resolution optical spectra of 12 Wolf-Rayet galaxies obtained using longslit spectrograph on Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. We derived the emission line ratios for a number of star-forming knots in each Wolf-Rayet galaxy. Star formation properties in these galaxies are discussed.

  • It is well known that theoretical models of Wolf-Rayet stars are not consistent with observational data in terms of temperature and stellar radius. Recent study in analytical and numerical simulations show the importance of density inhomogeneity in stellar envelope. Using 1-dimensional numerical simulations, we study how such clumpiness arisen over convective surface of Wolf-Rayet stars affect their evolutionary path. Starting from pure helium star models, we constructed 21 different initial conditions by varying stellar mass, metallicity, and the clumpiness of the sub-surface convection zone. We run the simulations until the oxygen-burning is reached and find that the influence of the clumpiness is sensitive to the initial metallicity. Our models with high metallicity including the effect of the density inhomogeneity can roughly explain the observed properties of Wolf-Rayet stars such as stellar radius and temperature. By contrast, despite a considerable amount of density inhomogeneity is given, low metallicity models could not fully explain observations. To understand the inconsistency in low metallicity models, detailed study with improved model is required, taking account of the error range of the observations.

  • The absolute measurements of fluxes in the region ${\lambda}{\lambda}3,100-8,090\;{\AA}$ emitted in the visible continua of some galactic Wolf-Rayet stars are presented. These observations were made by a two-channel scanner which was built up cooperatively by the Observatoire of Lyon and the Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale. The fluxes, dereddened from those data, were combined with IUE and ANS ultraviolet measurements. These fluxes were compared with those of LTE plane paralleled model atmospheres of Kurucz (1979) and were also integrated in order to derive effective temperatures and bolometric corrections for the program stars. The derived effective temperatures and bolometric corrections for the stars were in the range of $25,000\;K{\sim}32,700\;K$, and of $-2.5\;mag.{\sim}-3.7\;mag.$, respectively.

  • We have carried out integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy of $H{\alpha}$, [$N{\small{II}}$] and [$O{\small{III}}$] emission lines for a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) with Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and weak emission-line stars (wels). Comparing their spatially-resolved kinematic observations with morpho-kinematic models allowed us to disentangle their three-dimensional gaseous structures. Our results indicate that these PNe have axisymmetric morphologies, either bipolar or elliptical. In many cases the associated kinematic maps for the PNe around hot central stars also reveal the presence of so-called fast low-ionization emission regions.

  • We have carried out optical spectroscopic measurements of emission lines for a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae with Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and weak emission-line stars (wels). The plasma diagnostics and elemental abundance analysis have been done using both collisionally excited lines (CELs) and optical recombination lines (ORLs). It was found that the abundance discrepancy factors ($ADF{\equiv}ORL/CEL$) are closely correlated with the difference between temperatures derived from forbidden lines and those from $He\;{\small{I}}$ recombination lines, implying the existence of H-deficient materials embedded in the nebula. The $H{\beta}$ surface brightness correlations suggest that they might be also related to the nebular evolution.

  • Massive stars blow powerful stellar winds throughout their evolutionary stages from the main sequence to Wolf-Rayet phases. The amount of mechanical energy deposited in the interstellar medium by the wind from a massive star can be comparable to the explosion energy of a core-collapse supernova that detonates at the end of its life. In this study, we estimate the kinetic energy deposition by massive stars in our Galaxy by considering the integrated Galactic initial mass function and modeling the stellar wind luminosity. The mass loss rate and terminal velocity of stellar winds during the main sequence, red supergiant, and Wolf-Rayet stages are estimated by adopting theoretical calculations and observational data published in the literature. We find that the total stellar wind luminosity due to all massive stars in the Galaxy is about ${\mathcal{L}}_w{\approx}1.1{\times}10^{41}erg\;s^{-1}$, which is about 1/4 of the power of supernova explosions, ${\mathcal{L}}_{SN}{\approx}4.8{\times}10^{41}erg\;s^{-1}$. If we assume that ~ 1 - 10 % of the wind luminosity could be converted to Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) through collisonless shocks such as termination shocks in stellar bubbles and superbubbles, colliding-wind shocks in binaries, and bow-shocks of massive runaway stars, stellar winds might be expected to make a significant contribution to GCR production, though lower than that of supernova remnants.

  • We present recent data of absolute measurements of flux emmitted in the visible continua of some galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, carried out by means of a two-channel scanner built up cooperatively by the Observatoire de Lyon and the Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale. Our measurements lead to the determination of stellar angular diameters which enable us to compute log $L_*/L_{\odot}$ and to locate the WR stars in the HR diagram: The WR stars are cooler than the zero age main sequence (ZAMS) and the WN7, WN8 types appear more luminous than other subclasses. The stellar wind terminal velocities, $V_{\infty}$, deduced from the empirical relation of the effective temperatures by Underhil1(1983) and $V_{\infty}$ adopted from the work of Willis(1982) show about 2,000km/s. We derived the rate of mass loss for the program stars from the formula, $\dot{M}={\varepsilon}(T_{eff})\;L/V_{\infty}{\cdot}c$ by using the obtained effective temperatures, luminosities and $V_{\infty}$ in this work. Their values range from $\dot{M}=1.4{\times}10^{-5}$ to $\dot{M}=5.8{\times}10^{-5}\;\dot{M}_{\odot}/yr$.

  • We investigate the observational properties of Wolf-Rayet stars, suggest the constraint of their mass-loss rate and apply our results to the observed progenitor candidates of Type Ib/Ic supernovae (iPTF13bvn and SN 2017ein). For this purpose, we adopt the WR star models with various mass-loss rates and wind terminal velocities. We obtain the high resolution spectra of those models at the pre-supernova phase using the radiative transfer code CMFGEN. We verify the optically faint property of SN Ic progenitors and show that the optical faintness is mainly originated by the high effective temperature at the photosphere. We also show that a simple analytic model for WR winds using a constant opacity can roughly predict the photospheric parameters. We show that the change of the mass-loss rate and the terminal wind velocity critically affects the optical luminosity. We find the optical luminosities of SN Ic progenitor models with our fiducial mass-loss rate prescription are fainter than the detection limits. We also suggest the mass-loss rate of WR stars may not exceed 2 times of our fiducial value by comparing our predictions with the detection limit of SN Ib/Ic progenitors. The directly observed progenitor candidate of iPTF13bvn can be explained by our SN Ib progenitor models. We find that the SN 2017ein progenitor candidate is too bright and too blue to be a SN Ic progenitor.

  • We list up the Paα-emitting sources observed in the Carina Region (l = 276°-296°) using the MIRIS Paα Galactic Plane Survey data. A total of 201 sources are cataloged. Out of them, 118 sources are coincident with those in the WISE H II region catalog. 52 H II region candidates are newly confirmed as definite H II regions by detecting the Paα recombination lines. For the remaining 83 sources, we search the corresponding objects in the SIMBAD database. 26 point-like sources are associated with planetary nebulae or emission-line stars (such as Wolf-Rayet and Blue supergiant stars). Also, we carry out aperture photometry to measure Paα fluxes for the sources that show circular features without overlapping with other bright sources. For the whole Galactic Plane, the complete Paα-emitting source catalog is in progress.
