Massive binary stars lose mass by two mechanisms: jet-driven mass loss during periods of active mass transfer and by wind-driven mass loss. Beta Lyrae is an eclipsing, semi-detached binary whose state of active mass transfer provides a unique opportunity to study how the evolution of binary systems is affected by jet-driven mass loss. Roche lobe overflow from the primary star feeds the thick accretion disk which almost completely obscures the mass-gaining star. A hot spot predicted to be on the edge of the accretion disk may be the source of beta Lyrae's bipolar outflows. I present results from spectropolarimetric data taken with the University of Wisconsin's Half-Wave Spectropolarimeter and the Flower and Cook Observatory's photoelastic modulating polarimeter instrument which have implications for our current understanding of the system's disk geometry. Using broadband polarimetric analysis, I derive new information about the structure of the disk and the presence and location of a hot spot. These results place constraints on the geometrical distribution of material in beta Lyrae and can help quantify the amount of mass lost from massive interacting binary systems during phases of mass transfer and jet-driven mass loss.
Stars form through the gravitational collapse of molecular clouds. However, the rate at which a star gains most of its mass and the physics that drives the main phase of stellar growth is still unclear. The typical luminosity of observed protostars is smaller than what expected from the Shu's inside-out collapse model, which predicts a constant mass accretion rate. The episodic accretion model has been suggested as a solution of this luminosity problem. The JCMT Transient survey is a long term monitoring program using JCMT/SCUBA-2 to detect accretion variability of protostars in the eight nearby star-forming regions. Recently, we found a rise of the 850 micron flux at a clump in the Serpens main region at the rate of ~17% relative to the mean flux over previous observations. The submm clump is associated with a class I protostar, EC53, which has been reported as a binary system with a periodic variability. In this talk, we will provide a brief overview of the JCMT Transient Survey project, present the detection of the variable source, and discuss about follow-up observations.
We present the high-resolution spectrum of the S-type symbiotic star V455 Sco obtained with the Dupont telescope in 2014 June. We note that the Raman-scattered O VI ${\lambda}1032$ at $6825{\AA}$ exhibits a triple-peak profile. Adopting an accretion disk model with an additional contribution from a collimated bipolar outflow, we attempt to fit the profile. We propose that the blue and central peaks are formed via Raman-scattering of O VI line photons from the accretion flow and that the bipolar flow is responsible for the remaining red peak. It is also noted that V455 Sco exhibits the Raman-scattered He II features blueward of $H{\alpha}$ and $H{\beta}$.
This article reports the spectral behavior of CH Cygni, using data obtained in October 2005 and June 2006. In these epochs, CH Cygni showed emission lines of H I, Fe II, [Fe II], [O III], [N II], [Ne III] and [S II]. Many of these lines were more enhanced since 2004. The underlying M-type spectrum was removed to get the intrinsic emission profile, and the resulting profiles were deconvoluted into several Gaussian components. Also, the radial velocities for all the lines that appeared in these spectra of CH Cygni were measured. The resultant lines were compared with each other and with those obtained in 2004; the findings are explained in terms of an accretion disk and jets.
The evolutionary tracks of a protostar of one solar mass under quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium are computed with mass-accretion time scales of $10^3,\;10^4,\;10^5\;and\;10^6$ years, and their resulting behaviors in the H-R diagram are discussed. It is found that there exists a critical time scale of mass accretion, which reverses the course of their evolutionary tracks. A value of the critical time scale appears to lie between $10^3\;and\;10^4$ years. The physical cause for the presence of the critical time scale is discussed. Finally, it is proposed that star formation requires at least several $10^3$ years before any star is born out of dark dense interstellar clouds.
Using a phenomenological model for the accretion onto the magnetic white dwarf, we calclliated some optical line profiles from the magnetosphere of such systems. Line profiles of these systems seem to be produced in the magnetosphere of the compact star due to the reemission of X-ray produced near the stellar surface. Some results of our new calculation and the analysis of these results will be presented. Our results show that the model used here can reproduce the observed optical line profiles and open the possiblity to determine the parameters of individual systems.
Sanduleak's star is a suspected symbiotic binary located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is known that it has a giant jet with physical size ~ 14pc. Its spectrum shows two strong emission bands at $6825{\AA}$ and $7082{\AA}$, which are originated from Raman-scattering of O VI by neutral hydrogen atoms. We present the high-resolution spectrum of Sanudleak's star obtained with MIKE at the Magellan-Caly telescope to investigate the O VI emission region based on the profiles of the two Raman features. In this spectrum, it is noted that the Raman $6825{\AA}$ feature exhibits a single broad peak profile, which is in high contrast with a clear triple peak profile of the Raman $7082{\AA}$ feature. In our analysis we suggest that the O VI emission region consist of three main emission parts: an accretion disk, a bipolar outflow and an optically thick, compact component surrounding the white dwarf. By performing Monte Carlo simulation we constrain the representative column density of the H I scattering region N_HI ~1${\times}$10^23 cm^-2, which is in accordance with the observed flux ratio in the two Raman features F(6825)/F(7082) ~ 4.5.

Our HI monster sample is a set of local HI-rich galaxies identified by the ALFALFA survey (Arecibo Legacy Fast Survey ALFA) at z<0.08. Intriguingly, they are also found with a relatively large molecular gas reservoir compared to the galaxies with similar stellar mass and color, yet their star formation rate is quite comparable to normal spirals. This makes our HI monsters good candidates of galaxies in the process of gas accretion which may lead to the stellar mass growth. One feasible explanation for their relatively low star formation activity for a given high cool gas fraction is the gas in monsters being too turbulent to form stars as normal spirals. In order to verify this hypothesis, we probe the molecular gas kinematics of 10 HI monsters which we observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). We utilize the tilted ring model to investigate what fraction of the molecular gas in the sample is regularly and smoothly rotating. In addition, we model the molecular gas disk using the GALMOD package of the Groningen Image Processing System (GIPSY) and compare with the observations to identify the gas which is offset from the 'co-planar differential rotation'. Based on the results, we discuss the possibility of gas accretion in the sample, and the potential origin of non-regularly rotating gas and the inefficient star formation.
