Recently, failure rates of Kosdaq IPO firms are increasing and their survival rates tend to be very low, and when these firms do fail, often times backed by a number of governmental financial supports, they may inflict severe financial damage to investors, let alone economy as a whole. To ensure investors' confidence in Kosdaq and foster promising and healthy businesses, it is necessary to precisely assess their intrinsic values and survivability. This study investigates what contributed to the failure of IPO firms and analyzed how these elements are factored into corresponding firms' stock returns. Failure risks are assessed at the time of IPO. This paper considers factors reflecting IPO characteristics, a firm's underwriter prestige, auditor's quality, IPO offer price, firm's age, and IPO proceeds. The study further went on to examine how, if at all, these failure risks involved during IPO led to post-IPO stock prices. Sample firms used in this study include 98 Kosdaq firms that have failed and 569 healthy firms that are classified into the same business categories, and Logit models are used in estimate the probability of failure. Empirical results indicate that auditor's quality, IPO offer price, firm's age, and IPO proceeds shown significant relevance to failure risks at the time of IPO. Of other variables, firm's size and ROA, previously deemed significantly related to failure risks, in fact do not show significant relevance to those risks, whereas financial leverage does. This illustrates the efficacy of a model that appropriately reflects the attributes of IPO firms. Also, even though R&D expenditures were believed to be value relevant by previous studies, this study reveals that R&D is not a significant factor related to failure risks. In examing the relation between failure risks and stock prices, this study finds that failure risks are negatively related to 1 or 2 year size-adjusted abnormal returns after IPO. The results of this study may provide useful knowledge for government regulatory officials in contemplating pertinent policy and for credit analysts in their proper evaluation of a firm's credit standing.
The soluble loess-sulfur mixture allowed standing to remove insoluble component materials for five weeks after manufacturing. We decreased the pH level of soluble loess-sulfur mixture at pH 1.0 modified with decreasing 25% sodium hydroxide than original content. The pH ranges of soluble loess-sulfur mixture solutions were adjusted to pH 5.0-pH 11.0 (pH 1 unit) with brown rice vinegar (pH 2.8). The pH of original loess-sulfur mixture was about pH 13 and damaged the foliar parts and young leaves of tomato after twice application. These stock solutions can be diluted 500:1 with tap water to make a 0.05% working solution and were sprayed two times with 7 days interval to the leaf and stem of tomato, which were spontaneously infected with E. cichoracearum. Control efficacy of powdery mildew ranged from 85% to 90% at 7 days after first application. After second application, each loess-sulfur mixture solutions adjusted pH level significantly suppressed the powdery mildew disease in tomato. Consequently, loess-sulfur complex adjusted pH level with brown rice vinegar was suggested to be low in acute toxicity at all different pH values and suggested to use an agent for control of tomato powdery mildew in organic farming.

The daily fluctuations of occurrence rate and standing stock of zooplankton, the relationship between dry and wet weights of gelatinous zooplankton, and the size distributions of body length and body weight of zooplankton were investigated in the sea around Cheju Island from September 1996 to August 1997. Mean ratios of wet to dry weights were 66.46 (raging from 47.05 to 84.64) in the gelatinous zooplankton and 10.89 (raging 9.21 to 14.85) in the non-gelatinous zooplankton which consisted of crustaceans such as copepods, decapods, mysids, and ostracods etc. Rarios of gelatinous zooplankton to non-gelatinous zooplankton (G/NG) in wet weight was 0.99 (0.28-2.30), indicating high occurrence rate of gelatinous in the study area. The seasonal and diel fluctuations of the gelatinous zooplankton were very large, and G/NG ratios greatly varied with seasons and dat/night cycles. The size distributions of body length of zooplankton (250-500 urn: 35.5% in maximum), and wet (0.1-0.2 mg: 34.4%) and dry weights (0.025-0.05 mg: 44.8%) showed much difference depending composition of the zooplankton groups. These results show that quantitative estimations of zooplankton produc- tivity only based on wet weight should be corrected to better understand and evaluate marine resources in Korean waters.
Daytime surface zooplankton were collected bimonthly from April 1993 to March 1994 at six stations around upwelling and adjacent areas of Cosan, western part of Cheju Island. This paper deals with the occurrence, biomass and some other characteristics of zooplankton in these areas. Copepods had two peaks in the abundance in June $(235\;ind./m^3)$ and November $(301\;ind./m^3)$, but were not especially abundant in upwelling area. While gelatinous organisms seldom occurred in the upwelling, and the outer area with high density of $75\;ind./m^3$ (in June) and $458\;ind./m^3$ (in November) at the intermediate area, seasonal values of biomass with mean of $35.8\;mg/m^3$ were the highest in November and the lowest in January. Abundance of chaetognaths (mainly Sagitta spp.) ranged $15\~37\;inds./m^3$ and carcasses of Sagitta occurred very highly in the upwelling area in June ($54\%$ of total Sagitta organisms) and November $(70.5\%)$. Especially $48\~77\%$ of Sagitta individuals in upwelling area in November was attached by Oncaea mediterranea, O. venusta and Candacia bipinata. Pteropods with shells were sampled only in the upwelling area during strong upwelling season (November, $27\~64\;ind./m^3$), indicating the characteristics of ascending behavioral adaptation from the bottom water by upwelling.

The annual cycles of plant major nutrients and dissolved oxygen in a nutrients-rich semi-enclosed coastal inlet, chinhae Bay, of the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula are first presented. The water column of the bay is stratified during summer (April-late September) and well0mixed during winter (October-March). During the summer stratification period, dissolved oxygen contents exceed 400uM in the surface but diminish to less than 50uM in the near bottom waters, which often results in an anoxic environment in the inner part of Chinhae Bay. After the breakdown of the stratification in October, dissolved oxygen concentration remains undersaturated until February. The evidence of allochthonous input of N-nutrients throughout the year is readily seen in the water column: however. crude budget calculations show that the nutrients are efficiently utilized within the bay ecosystem, and that export of the nutrients from the bay to the shelf must be negligible. There is no sign of the enrichment of the nutrients in the water column. The eutrophication phenomenon sensu stricto is not observed in chinhae Bay. Using the standing stock of dissolved oxygen and estimation of the oxygen fluxes across the air-sea boundary, a benthic oxygen respiration rate during winter is estimated conservatively at 21-24 mmol Cm/SUP -2/d/SUP -1/. this oxygen respiration rate accounts for about 20% of the total phytoplankton production in winter.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the filtering-feeding effect of a freshwater mussel (Corbicula leana) on the phytoplankton communities in two lakes with different trophic conditions between June and September, 2000. Manipulation experiments were conducted with two treatments (the control and mussel addition), and each established in duplicate 10 l chambers. Both ambient nutrient (TN, TP) and chlorophyll-a concentrations were significantly (p<0.01) higher in Lake Ilgam than Lake Soyang. Cyanophytes (Microcystis, Oscillatoria, Lyngbya and Dactylococcopis) consistently dominated algal community in Lake llgam, while flagellated algae (Dinobryon divergence, Mallomonas, Rhodomonas) and cyanophytes (Microcystis)dominated in Lake Soyang. The net exponential death rate ($R\;=\;day^{-1}$) of total phytoplankton in the mussel treatment ranged $1.70{\sim}7.39$ and $0.38{\sim}1.64$ in Lakes Soyang and Ilgam, respectively. Mean filtering rate standardized by mussel AFDW ($ml\;mgAFDW^{1}\;h^{-1}$) was much higher in Lake Soyang ($1.70{\sim}3.06$) than in Lake Ilgam($0.24{\sim}0.88$0.24~o.88). Estimating FR per mussel, 1 mussel filtered $1.6{\sim}7.8\;l$ per day and $1.7{\sim}3.0\;l$ per day in Lakes Soyang and Ilgam, respectively. Based on tile C-flux tobiomass ratio, Corbicula leana consumed $0.8{\sim}4.4$ fold of phytoplankton standing stock in Lake Soyang, and $0.4{\sim}1.6$ fold in Lake Ilgam per day. Mussel feeding resulted in increase of SRP concentration by $30{\sim}50%$, compared with the control. The results of this study suggest that filter-feeding activity of Corbicula leana varies depending on the phytoplankton density and community composition. The high seston consumption rate of Corsicuja Jeaua even in a eutrophic lake suggests that biomanipulation approach using filter-feeding mussels can be used far wate rquality management in small eutrophic reservoirs.

In order to understand environment condition and phytoplankton community before and after coastal upwelling, the influences of upwelling events on phytoplankton community were studied at 18 stations located the Southern part of East Sea, Korea from May to August 2013. The surface water masses showed low temperature and high salinity due to upwelling events at coastal stations (A1, B1, C1). Correlation between temperature and nutrients (DIP, r=-0.218, p<0.01; DIN, r=-0.306, p<0.01; silicate, r=-0.274, p<0.01) was significantly negative. This result could be explained that nutrients were supplied to surface water by the upwelling of bottom water. Phytoplankton communities were composed of 186 species. Phytoplankton abundance were relatively high in May (C1, $726{\times}10^3cells\;L^{-1}$) and July (A1, $539{\times}10^3cells\;L^{-1}$). Total chlorophyll a and micro-size fraction ($>20{\mu}m$) increased at coastal stations in July and August, while phytoplankton abundance and total chl. a was much low in June. Dominant species in June was Pseudo-nitzschia spp. of which the cell size was $309{\mu}m^3$. Cell size of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. was smaller than dominant species in other period. Therefore, the increase in total chloro-phyll a and the size of phytoplankton was resulted in the sufficient supply of nutrients. In contrast, these tendencies were not observed at outside stations. These results suggested that coastal upwelling was an important influencing factor to determine the species composition and standing stock of phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Southern part of East Sea, Korea.
