  • The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rock is a basic parameter in underground engineering design. The disadvantages of this commonly employed laboratory testing method are untimely testing, difficulty in performing core testing of broken rock mass and long and complicated onsite testing processes. Therefore, the development of a fast and simple in situ rock UCS testing method for field use is urgent. In this study, a multi-function digital rock drilling and testing system and a digital core bit dedicated to the system are independently developed and employed in digital drilling tests on rock specimens with different strengths. The energy analysis is performed during rock cutting to estimate the energy consumed by the drill bit to remove a unit volume of rock. Two quantitative relationship models of energy analysis-based core drilling parameters (ECD) and rock UCS (ECD-UCS models) are established in this manuscript by the methods of regression analysis and support vector machine (SVM). The predictive abilities of the two models are comparatively analysed. The results show that the mean value of relative difference between the predicted rock UCS values and the UCS values measured by the laboratory uniaxial compression test in the prediction set are 3.76 MPa and 4.30 MPa, respectively, and the standard deviations are 2.08 MPa and 4.14 MPa, respectively. The regression analysis-based ECD-UCS model has a more stable predictive ability. The energy analysis-based rock drilling method for the prediction of UCS is proposed. This method realized the quick and convenient in situ test of rock UCS.

  • Eddy current standard including an artificial slot for the calibration of absolute type surface probe was fabricated. Developed eddy current standard has the electric conductivity and dimensions, and contains artificial slot as established in ASTM E 1629. The width and depth of artificial slot are 0.1 mm and 0.5 mm respectively. This slot was only possible to measure the depth on the two side edges, and impossible for the middle part with general measurement tools. The ultrasonic test method was applied for measuring depth of the middle part of the artificial slot in the standard. Using this method the dimension could be measured successfully with uncertainty about $15\;{\mu}m$. Calibration of eddy current standard for the absolute probe can be performed by this technique.

  • A Bayesian testing procedure is proposed for assessment of bioequivalence in both mean and variance which ensures population bioequivalence under normality assumption. We derive the joint posterior distribution of the means and variances in a standard 2 ${\times}$ 2 crossover experimental design and propose a Bayesian testing procedure for bioequivalence based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. The proposed method is applied to a real data set.

  • Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is a single-stranded, positive-sense ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus belonging to the genus Pestivirus of the Flaviviridae family. BVD frequently causes economic losses to farmers. Among bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) strains, BVDV-1b is predominant and widespread in Hanwoo calves. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is an essential method for diagnosing BVDV-1b and has become the gold standard for diagnosis in the Republic of Korea. However, this diagnostic method is time-consuming and requires expensive equipment. Therefore, Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-Cas (CRISPR-Cas) systems have been used for point-of-care (POC) testing of viruses. Developing a sensitive and specific method for POC testing of BVDV-1b would be advantageous for controlling the spread of infection. Thus, this study aimed to develop a novel nucleic acid detection method using the CRISPR-Cas13 system for POC testing of BVDV-1b. The sequence of the BVD virus was extracted from National Center for Biotechnology Information (NC_001461.1), and the 5' untranslated region, commonly used for detection, was selected. CRISPR RNA (crRNA) was designed using the Cas13 design program and optimized for the expression and purification of the LwCas13a protein. Madin Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells were infected with BVDV-1b, incubated, and the viral RNA was extracted. To enable POC viral detection, the compatibility of the CRISPR-Cas13 system was verified with a paper-based strip through collateral cleavage activity. Finally, a colorimetric assay was used to evaluate the detection of BVDV-1b by combining the previously obtained crRNA and Cas13a protein on a paper strip. In conclusion, the CRISPR-Cas13 system is highly sensitive, specific, and capable of nucleic acid detection, making it an optimal system for the early point-of-care testing of BVDV-1b.

  • The purpose of this research is to review testing principle, testing design and experimental results of the four dynamic moisture movement testers. The research analyzes Moisture Manager Tester (MMT), Alambeta Instrument, Dynamic Surface Moisture Movement Tester, and Gravimetric Absorbent Testing Method based on American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) E 96 which is an international standard testing method. Although many of researches use ASTM E 96 to measure moisture movement on a fabric, it has several weaknesses, such as long experimental time and a physical change of sample by a holder of the frame. Hence, lots of researchers have studied and developed the new measurement systems measuring moisture management on a fabric or garment and ultimately mimic heat energy and perspiration created by the human body. These moisture management systems use a variety of parameters, such as electricity, color, and sensor to measure their movement in the fabric. Through comparison with the existing tester (ASTM E 96), the research recognizes the strength and weakness in the dynamic moisture movement testers.

  • The study was carried out to suggest on opinion of the standardization of size deviation in the existing raw silk testing method. 1. The present grade A of size deviation stipulates 4.61 to 5.80 of standard deviation for 50 to 69 denier of mean value, however, the 5.80 standard deviation with the mean values of 50 and 69 denier belong to different distribution. 2. It is reasonable that the variation coefficients of grade 2A should be lower than that of grade A. However, the present testing method shows larger variation in grade 2A than in grade A. This is illustrated 9.00 for 69 denier in grade 2A and 8.41 for 70 denier in grade A. 3. The size deviation value compares the quality of raw silk with different mean value. Therefore, the standard deviation is recommended to be replaced by the C.V. value in determining the grade of silk. 4. The C.V. have a tendency to increase with lower grades below 6A for the size deviation below 33 denier with some inconsistencies. The figures should be adjusted so that the C.V. inconsistencies size deviation below 33 denier will be corrected. 5. The standard deviation increases with size under the same grade for the size deviations above 33 denier, however, the C.V. does not vary greatly with size deviation. 6. To rectify the above-mentioned inconsistencies the C.V. conversion and curvilinear regresion correction is recommended to improve the present silk testing method 7. The table of size deviation standard are as follows: Suggested standard of size deviation, unit: C.V. Value

  • Chorionic villus sampling has gained importance as a tool for early cytogenetic diagnosis with a shift toward first trimester screening. First trimester screening using nuchal translucency and biomarkers is effective for screening. Chorionic villus sampling generally is performed at 10-12 weeks by either the transcervical or transabdominal approach. There are two methods of analysis; the direct method and the culture method. While the direct method may prevent maternal cell contamination, the culture method may be more representative of the true fetal karyotype. There is a concern for mosaicism which occurs in approximately 1% of cases, and mosaic results require genetic counseling and follow-up amniocentesis or fetal blood sampling. In terms of complications, procedure-related pregnancy loss rates may be the same as those for amniocentesis when undertaken in experienced centers. When the procedure is performed after 9 weeks gestation, the risk of limb reduction is not greater than the risk in the general population. At present, chorionic villus sampling is the gold standard method for early fetal karyotyping; however, we anticipate that improvements in noninvasive prenatal testing methods, such as cell free fetal DNA testing, will reduce the need for invasive procedures in the near future.

  • Corrugated fiberboard is a widely used packaging material because of its high compressive strength and stiffness despite light weight. Corrugated fiberboards with microflutes with height $\leq$ 1.5 mm, such as E, F or G, have been developed. As microflutes have a different geometry from other conventional flutes, they may behave differently in testing and require a new testing method. Therefore, we evaluated the flat crush resistance of corrugated fiberboard with microflutes according to the ISO and TAPPI standard test methods. In addition, the effects of specimen area and platen compression rate were examined. The goal of this study was to identify an appropriate method for flat crush test (FCT) of corrugated fiberboard with microflutes. When a test piece with a standard area was subjected to the FCT in accordance with ISO and TAPPI methods, microflute corrugated fiberboard demonstrated a different load-displacement curve. An area of 20 $cm^2$ was determined to be the most appropriate for FCTof microflute corrugated fiberboard.
