  • N- or O-doped STS304 stainless films were synthesized by an unbalanced magnetron sputtering process with various argon and reactive gas ($N_2$, $O_2$) mixtures. These films were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and Knoop microhardness tester. The Results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that a STS304 stainless steel film synthesized without reactive gas using a bulk STS304 stainless steel target had a ferrite bcc structure ($\alpha$ phase), while the N-doped STS304 stainless film was consisted of a nitrogen supersaturated fcc structure, which hsa a strong ${\gamma}$(200) phase. In the O-doped films, oxide Phases ($Fe_2$$O_3$ and $Cr_2$$O_3$) were observed from the films synthesized under an excess $O_2$ flow rate of 9sccm. AES analysis showed that nitrogen content in N-doped films increased as the nitrogen flow rate increased. Approximately 43 at.%N in the N-doped film was measured using a nitrogen flow rate of 8sccm. In O-doped film, approximately 15 at.%O was detected using a $O_2$ flow rate of 12sccm. the Knoop microhardness value of N-doped film using a nitrogen flow rate of 8 sccm was measured to be approximately $H_{ k}$ 1200 and this high value could be attributed to the fine grain size and increased residual stress in the N-doped film.

  • This study investigates the application of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) anodization techniques on stainless steel 304L (SS304L) in an ethylene glycol and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) electrolyte solution to produce a nano-porous oxide layer. With limited research on AC anodizing of stainless steel, this study focuses on comparing AC and DC anodization in terms of current density versus time response, phase analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and corrosion rate determined by linear polarization. Both AC and DC anodization were performed for 60 minutes at 50 V in an electrolyte solution containing 0.5% NH4F and 3% H2O in ethylene glycol. The results show that AC anodization exhibited higher current density compared to DC anodization. XRD analysis revealed the presence of ferrite (α-Fe) and austenite (γ-Fe) phases in the as-received specimen, while both AC and DC anodized specimens exhibited only the γ-Fe phase. The corrosion rate of the AC-anodized specimen was measured at 0.00083 mm/year, lower than the corrosion rate of the DC-anodized specimen at 0.00197 mm/year. These findings indicate that AC anodization on stainless steel offers advantages in terms of higher current density, phase transformation, and lower corrosion rate compared to DC anodization. These results highlight the need for further investigation and exploration of AC anodization as a promising technique for enhancing the electrochemical properties of stainless steel.

  • As the steam temperature of fossil power plant boiler is increasing, the use of 9Cr-1Mo high alloy material is prevalent and it is needed to investigate the characteristics of low cycle fatigue for high alloy and austenite stainless steel that has used up to recently. As a result of test, in 9Cr-1Mo high alloy steel, the relation of strain and fatigue life is non-linear and the crack mode of low cycle fatigue is brittle but in the austenite stainless steel, that of strain and fatigue life is linear and the crack mode of low cycle fatigue is ductile. Comparing the fatigue life between high alloy and austenite stainless steel, there is no consistent characteristics as to strains. But the fatigue life of 9Cr-1Mo steel is longer by 25% than that of STS304 stainless steel in the relatively low, 0.3% strain. In the other strain, the fatigue life of two materials is similar.

  • The stainless steel 304 oxidized at $70^{\circ}C$ in 2.5M CrO3/5.0M H2SO4 solution and at $200^{\circ}C$ , $300^{\circ}C$, and $400^{\circ}C$ in the air are analyzed with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to obtain depth composition profile of the surface region. It is confirmed that the surface region has a quite different composition from that of the bulk. This is due to a difference in the outward diffusion rates of the oxidized species in the surface region. The order of diffusion rates is Fe > Cr > Ni in the experimental temperature range. In spite of the inferior rate of diffusion, Cr is enriched in the surface when it is oxidized in the CrO3/H2SO4 solution. This is due to preferential dissolution of oxidized Fe.

  • Ceria(CeO2) stabilized zirconia(CeSZ) sol was synthesized with zirconium n-butoxide Zr(OC4H9)4 and cerium nitrate hexahydrate Ce(NO3)3.6H2O as precursors and ethylacetoacetate(EAcAc) as a chelating agent under atmosphere. CeSZ films were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel using the prepared polymeric sol by dipcoating and the coating characteristics were investigated by XRD, ellipsometry, scratch test and SEM. The CeSZ film began to crystallize from amorphous to tetragonal phase at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and it was not converted into monoclinic phase up to 100$0^{\circ}C$ by the addition of 16mol% CeO2 as a stabilizer which could suppress phase transformation of zirconia. The CeSZ films were prepared by varying the EAcAc contents and the cncentration of CeSZ sol and measured the thickness and refractive index. From these results, it was found that the EAcAc contents and concentration of CeSZ coating sol evidently affect the densification of CeSZ film. The CeSZ film coated with 0.4M CeSZ sol and heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10min had thickness of 50nm and 17% porosity. The CeSZ film on 304 stainless steel effectively acted as a protective layer against oxidation up to 80$0^{\circ}C$ and had superior corrosion resistance in 25% H2SO4 solution for 4.5 hrs.

  • Plasma nitriding is a surface treatment process which is increasingly used to improve wear, fatigue and corrosion resistance of industrial parts. Active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN) has both the advantages of the classic cold wall and the hot wall conventional dc plasma nitriding (DCPN) method and the parts to be nitrided are no longer directly exposed to the plasma. In this study, AS plasma nitriding has been used to nitride the UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel, AISI 304 and AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel, and AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. Treated specimenswere characterized by means of microstructural analysis, microhardness measurements and electrochemical tests in NaCl aerated solutions. Hardness of the nitride cases of AISI 420 stainless steel by Knoop test can get up to 1300 HK0.1. From polarization tests, the corrosion current densities of AISI 420 and UNS S31803specimens ASPN at $420^{\circ}C$ were generally lower than those of their untreated substrates. The corrosion resistance of UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel can be enhanced by plasma nitriding at $420^{\circ}C$ Cowing to the formation of the S-phase.

  • Because of its rustproof property, stainless steel is widely used in kitchen appliances, building materials, electronics, chemical plants and automobile exhausts. In addition, the utilization of stainless steel for fuel cell application is growing. As the demand for this material increases, it is necessary to study the basic properties of stainless steel such as corrosion resistance, heat transfer, formability, cutting or shearing ability and weldability. In this article, the mechanical properties, formability and press forming performance of stainless steel are reviewed. Since temperature and strain rate affect the press forming performance of STS304(austenitic) stainless steel, the influence of these parameters on the plastic behavior should be investigated. Moreover, measures for the prevention of ridging of STS430(ferritic) and delayed fracture of STS430, which respectively appear during and after press forming, should be considered. Recently, stainless steel sheets with a thickness lower than 0.2 mm have been widely used in applications for mobile phone, digital camera and fuel cell separator. Therefore, there is a growing interest of studying the grain size effect and plasticity at the crystal scale in order to understand the anisotropic behavior and micro forming ability of thin sheets. This review paper was written with the objective of helping engineers and researchers to understand the forming characteristics of stainless steel and to establish standards in plastic forming techniques.

  • This paper presents the ultrasonic characteristics of weldment and detectability of defects of weldment in Austenitic Stainless Steel Type 304 that is composed of mostly coolant piping system in nuclear power plants. The results of this experient show as follows: 1. When the ultrasonic beam detects the defects on the side of base metal and on the opposite side of weldment, the indications which was detected on the screen show different amplitude and different metal path each. 2. The ultrasonically estimated notch depth is generally oversized than actual notch depth. 3. It is easy for the false indication to show up on the screen because of columnar structure of weldment in austenitic stainless steel. 4. The higher frequencies of transducer have more difficulties to detect the defects of the opposite side of weldment because of ultrasonic attenuation in weldment and the longitudinal transmitter-receiver transducer is the most effective in detecting the opposite side defects of weldment.
