  • Recently, a fuel reforming plant for supplying high purity hydrogen is being applied to submarines. Since steam reforming is an endothermic reaction, it is necessary to continuously supply heat to the reactor. A fuel reforming plant for a submarine needs a multi-stage burner (MSB) to acquire heat and convert the combustion gas to $CO_2+H_2O$. The MSB has problems that the combustion imbalance occurs during start-up due to the temperature restriction of the combustion gas. This problems can be solved by burning $H_2O$ together with fuel and $O_2$. In this study, the simulation results of MSB were analyzed to determine the optimum flow rate of $H_2O$ supplied to the 6-stage burner. When the flow rate of $H_2O$ was low, combustion was concentrated on the burner#6 in comparison with the burner#1-#5. This combustion concentration improved as the supply amount of $H_2O$ increased. As a results, it was necessary to supply at least 4.9 kmol/h of $H_2O$ (per 1 kmol/h of fuel) to burner#1 in order to maintain the combustion gas temperature of each stage at $750^{\circ}C$ and to convert the final stage burner gas composition to $CO_2+H_2O$.

  • Computations were performed to investigate the flow, temperature and pollutants in two stage heavy-oil combustion burner. The burner geometry and flow conditions were provided by a burner company. The goal of the study is to understand combustion phenomena according to each air inlet's velocity, excessive air ratio and air temperature through CFD. Air flow rates at two inlets are adjusted by a damper inside a burner. Here, injection conditions of liquid fuel are kept constant throughout all simulations. This assumption is made in order to limit the complexity of oil combustion though it may cause some disagreement. The final goal of this research is to design a Low-NOx heavy oil combustion burner through comparison between computational study and experimental ones. Besides experiments, simulation works can give us insights into heavy oil combustion and help us design a Low NOx burner while saving time and cost. The computational study is based on k-e model, P-1 radiation model(WSGGM) and PDF, and is implemented on a commercial code, FLUENT.

  • Low-temperature combustion (LTC) strategies, such as HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition), PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition), and RCCI (Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition), have been developed to effectively reduce NOx and PM while increasing the thermal efficiency of diesel engines. Through numerical analysis, this study examined the effects of the injection timing and two-stage injection ratio of diesel fuel, a highly reactive fuel, on the performance and exhaust gas of RCCI engines using gasoline as the low reactive fuel and diesel as the highly reactive fuel. In the case of two-stage injection, combustion slows down if the first injection timing is too advanced. The combustion temperature decreases, resulting in lower combustion performance and an increase in HC and CO. The injection timing of approximately -60°ATDC is considered the optimal injection timing considering the combustion performance, exhaust gas, and maximum pressure rise rate. When the second injection timing was changed during the two-stage injection, considering the combustion performance, exhaust gas, and the maximum pressure increase rate, it was judged to be optimal around -30°ATDC. In the case of two-stage injection, the optimal result was obtained when the first injection amount was set to approximately 60%. Finally, a two-stage injection rather than a single injection was considered more effective on the combustion performance and exhaust gas.

  • As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthened. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, it is well known that HCCI engines increased HC and CO. Thus, the investigation of combustion characteristics which consists cool and hot flames for HCCI engines were needed to obtain the optimal combustion condition. In this study, combustion characteristics for direct injection type HCCI engine such as quantity of cool flame and hot flame, ignition timing and ignition delay were investigated to clarify the effects of these parameters on performance. The results revealed that diesel combustion showed the two-stage ignition of cool flame and hot flame, the rate of cool flame increase and hot flame decrease with increasing intake air temperature. On the other hand, the gasoline combustion is the single-stage ignition and ignition timing is near the TDC. In addition mixed fuel combustion showed different phenomenon, which depends on the ratio of gasoline component. Ignition timing of mixed fuel is retarded near the TDC and the ignition delay is increased according to ratio of gasoline.

  • This paper examines the effects of a multi-stage pilot split injection strategy on combustion and exhaust emission factors in a single-cylinder diesel engine. One analysis noted that in the single-injection condition, the maximum in-cylinder pressure and rate of heat release were highest. The pilot injection quantity was evenly divided, showing a tendency to decrease as the number of injections increased. In another injection condition, when the multi-stage pilot split injection strategy was applied, IMEP, engine torque, and combustion increased. The COVIMEP was greatest with the lowest combustion efficiency. The combustion ability was poor. In a single injection condition, the O2 concentration in the exhaust gas was the lowest and the CO2 was the highest. When the multi-stage split injection strategy was applied, the low temperature combustion process proceeded, and the oxidation rate of CO2 decreased while the emission level increased. In a single injection condition in which a locally rich mixture was formed, the HC emission level showed the highest results. A 55.6% reduction of NOx emission occurred under a three-stage pilot injection condition while conducting a multi-stage pilot split injection strategy.

  • In a spark ignition engine, in order to make research on flame propagation, attentive concentration should be paid on initial combustion stage about the formation and development of flame. In addition, the initial stage of combustion governs overall combustion period in a spark ignition engine. With the increase of the size of flame kernel, it could reach initial flame stage easily, and the mixture could proceed to the combustion of stabilized state. Therefore, we must study the theoretical calculation of minimum flame kernel radius which effects on the formation and development of kernel. To calculate the minimum flame kernel radius, we must know the thermal conductivity, flame temperature, laminar burning velocity and etc. The thermal conductivity is derived from the molecular kinetic theory, the flame temperature from the chemical reaction equations and the laminar burning velocity from the D.K.Kuehl's formula. In order to estimate the correctness of the theoretically calculated minimum flame kernel radius, the researcheres compared it with the RMaly's experimental values.

  • Diesel engines exhaust much more NOx(Nitrogen Oxides) and PM(Particulate Matter) than gasoline engines, and it is not easy to reduce both NOx and PM simultaneously because of the trade-off relation between two components. This study investigated flame characteristics of the partial premixed compression ignition known as new combustion method which can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. The investigation was performed through the analysis of the flame images taken by a high speed camera from the visible engine which is the modified single cylinder diesel engine. The results obtained through this investigation are summarized as follows; (1) The area of the luminous yellow flame was reduced due to the decrease of flame temperature and even distribution of temperature. (2) The darkish yellow flame zone caused by the shortage of the remaining oxygen after the middle stage of combustion was considerably reduced. (3) Since the ignition delay was shortened, the violent combustion did not occur and the combustion duration became shortened.

  • In this work, a numerical investigation is performed for the combustion chamber of domestic gas boiler with 1-stage and 2-stage heat exchangers. The fluid flow and heat transfer performance is simulated with a structure change of heat exchanger. The numerical solution shows that the heat transfer of the 2-stage heat exchanger is about 24% higher than that of the 1-stage heat exchanger, while the pressure loss of the 2-stage heat exchanger increases. The temperature of combustion chamber with 2-stage heat exchanger is lower than that of 1-stage. This effect reduces thermal NOx with decrease of high temperature staying time of the combustion gas.

  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the combustion characteristics of stratified methane-air mixture under several initial charge conditions in the author's previous reports. The results showed that the improvement of thermal efficiency and reduction of heat loss was realized simultaneously by using 2-stage injection method. This paper deals with the reason why the stratified combustion has showed better combustion rate through the measurement and analysis of chemiluminescence of C $H^{*}$ and $C_{2}$$^{*}$ radicals. An optic fiber bundle is used to measure the local emission of C $H^{*}$ and $C_{2}$$^{*}$ radicals to map the relationship between the excess air ratio and local radical intensity ratio in the combustion vessel at 5 mm apart form the geometric center. The results show that there exist a relationship between the intensity ratio and the air-fuel ratio. It is revealed that the improvement of combustion rate in a lean-stratified mixture is realized through the 2-stage injection method. method.
