This paper presents the global stability of geosynthetic reinforced segmental retaining walls in tiered configuration. Four design cases of walls with different geometries and offset distances were analyzed based on the FHWA and NCMA design guidelines and the discrepancies between the different guidelines were identified. A series of global slope stability analyses were conducted using the limit-equilibrium analysis and the continuum mechanics based shear strength reduction method with the aim of identifying failure patterns and the associated factors of safety. The results indicated among other things that the FHWA design approach yields conservative results both in the external and internal stability calculations, i.e., lower factors of safety, than the NCMA design approach. It was also found that required reinforcement lengths are usually governed by the global slope stability requirement rather than the external stability calculations. Also shown is that the required reinforcement lengths for the upper tiers are much longer than those based on the current design guidelines.
This paper describes external and internal stability of reinforced earth wall using large-scale modular block and geogrid reinforcement. The evaluation for external and internal stability was conducted to analyze effect of wall height, reinforced soil (or backfill soils) and reinforcement strength. The external stability showed that the analysis cases were satisfied with design criteria, when the required minimum length and vertical spacing of reinforcement were 0.7H and 1m, respectively. The internal stability conformed that some cases were satisfied with design criteria in $25^{\circ}$ of internal friction angle of reinforced soil. Expecially, it will be applicable as wall structure considering a structural stability and economic efficiency based on evaluation of internal stability.

This article describes a part of collaborative research between industry and academy to develop an initial hull form of 46 feet motor yacht. Hydrodynamic performances such as stability, resistance and seaworthiness were estimated after completing the procedure of hull form design in the initial design stage.
Current Bridge foundation design is based on Working Stress Design(WSD), but Load Factor Based on Optimum Reliability(LFBOR) design method is more rational than the WSD. For this reason, this study proposes a reliability based design criteria for the bridge foundation, which is most common type of bridge foundation(Shallow, Pile and Caission), and also proposes the theoretical basis of nominal safety factors of stability analysis by introducing the reliability theory. The limit state equations of stability analysis of bridge foundation and the uncertainty measuring algorithms of each equation are also derived by Cornell's MFOSM(Mean First Order 2nd Moment Methods)using the stability analysis fourmula Highway Bridge Design Codes.
The design of truss type sign support structures is based on the guidelines provided by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Standard Specifications for Highway Signs, Luminaries and Traffic Signals and the American Institute of Steel Construction Design Specifications. Using these specifications, the column design strength is normally determined using the effective length approach. This approach does not always accurately address all issues associated with frame stability, including the actual end conditions of the individual members, variations of the loads in the members, and the resulting sidesway buckling for truss type sign support structures. This paper provides insight into the problems with the simplified design approach for determining the effective lengths and discusses different approaches for overcoming these simplifications. A system buckling approach, also known as a rational buckling analysis, is used in this study to determine improved predictions for design strength of truss type sign support structures.

In the present study, structural safety and stability on the main wing and tail planes of the 1.2 ton WIG(Wing in Ground Effect) flight vehicle, which will be a high speed maritime transportation system for the next generation, was performed. The carbon-epoxy composite material was used in design of wing structure. The skin-spar with skin-stressed structural type was adopted for improvement of lightness and structural stability. As a design procedure for this study, the design load was estimated with maximum flight load. From static strength analysis results using finite element method of the commercial codes. From the stress analysis results of the main wing, it was confirmed that the upper skin structure between the second rib and the third rib was unstable for the buckling load. Therefore in order to solve this problem, three stiffeners at the buckled region were added. After design modification, even though the weight of the wing was a little bit heavier than the target weight, the structural safety and stability was satisfied for design requirements.

A new design method of rubble mound structures that includes the considerations of stability and wave control is proposed. Using the method, design of structures that reduce the wave reflection and run-up and increase the rubble stability is assured under the given wave conditions. The new design formula is developed so that the allowable prcentage of damage and the wave grouping effects on rubble stability are also considered in design. For this a new definition of the mean run-sum is made. Finally, the new method is applied for the design of uniform and composite slope rubble mound structures and the significant advantages are found.

The PSC girders which currently used at highway bridge have the standard cross sections about 25m, 30m and 35m span. Thus, in case of highway bridge design, the bridge designer can choose the adequate standard cross section according to constructional condition. However, in railway bridge design, there are limitations on reasonable bridge design considering circumstances of a construction site and conditions of location etc, because the PSC girders used at railway bridge have the cross section about only 25m span length. In this study, the optimum design for the PSC girder railway bridge with 30m span length has been performed. Also, in order to investigate the dynamic stability of railway bridge using the optimum section of PSC girder, dynamic analysis has been carried out. From the results of analysis, it is suggested to denote the optimum section which satisfied the structural safety, dynamic stability and economical efficiency all together.
Wind loading is very important, even dominant in some cases, to large-span single-layer reticulated shells. At present, usually equivalent static methods based on quasi-steady assumption, as the same as the wind-resistant design of low-rise buildings, are used in the structural design. However, it is not easy to estimate a suitable equivalent static wind load so that the effects of fluctuating component of wind on the structural behaviors, especially on structural stability, can be well considered. In this paper, the effects of fluctuating component of wind load on the stability of a single-layer reticulated spherical shell model are investigated based on wind pressure distribution measured simultaneously in the wind tunnel. Several methods used to estimate the equivalent static wind load distribution for equivalent static wind-resistant design are reviewed. A new simple method from the stability point of view is presented to estimate the most unfavorable wind load distribution considering the effects of fluctuating component on the stability of shells. Finally, with comparisive analyses using different methods, the efficiency of the presented method for wind-resistant analysis of single-layer reticulated shells is established.
