  • We have carried out photometric follow-up observations of bright transiting extrasolar planets using the CbNUOJ 0.6 m telescope. We have tested the possibility of obtaining high photometric precision by applying the telescope defocus technique, allowing the use of several hundred seconds in exposure time for a single measurement. We demonstrate that this technique is capable of obtaining a root-mean-square scatter of sub-millimagnitude order over several hours for a V~10 host star, typical for transiting planets detected from ground-based survey facilities. We compared our results with transit observations from a telescope operated in in-focus mode. High photometric precision was obtained due to the collection of a larger amount of photons, resulting in a higher signal compared to other random and systematic noise sources. Accurate telescope tracking is likely to further contribute to lowering systematic noise by exposing the same pixels on the CCD. Furthermore, a longer exposure time helps reduce the effect of scintillation noise which otherwise has a significant effect for small-aperture telescopes operated in in-focus mode. Finally we present the results of modelling four light-curves in which a root-mean-square scatter of 0.70 to 2.3 milli-magnitudes was achieved.

  • Radar signal analysis of electronic warfare is a technique for identifying a radar type by signal parameters(direction, radion frequency, pulse repetition interval, pulse width, scan period..) extracted from a received radar pulse. However as the modern radar and new threat environments is advanced, radar identification ambiguity arises in the process of identifying the types of radars. In this paper, we analyze the problems of the existing method and propose a new method. This technique determines the validity of the scan period by the difference in the arrival time of the radar pulse and the minimum number of scan period discrimination. Experiments proved that the scan cycle results are derived regardless of the RMS((Root Mean Square) of the input amplitude.

  • With the development of renewable energy sector, the importance of solar energy is continuously increasing. Solar radiation forecasting is essential to accurately solar power generation forecasting. In this paper, we used time series models (ARIMA, ARIMAX, seasonal ARIMA, seasonal ARIMAX, ARIMA GARCH, ARIMAX-GARCH, seasonal ARIMA-GARCH, seasonal ARIMAX-GARCH). We compared the performance of the models using mean absolute error and root mean square error. According to the performance of the models without exogenous variables, the Seasonal ARIMA-GARCH model showed better performance model considering the problem of heteroscedasticity. However, when the exogenous variables were considered, the ARIMAX model showed the best forecasting accuracy.

  • This study identifies efficient earthquake intensity measures (IMs) for seismic performances and fragility evaluations of the reactor containment building (RCB) in the advanced power reactor 1400 (APR1400) nuclear power plant (NPP). The computational model of RCB is constructed using the beam-truss model (BTM) for nonlinear analyses. A total of 90 ground motion records and 20 different IMs are employed for numerical analyses. A series of nonlinear time-history analyses are performed to monitor maximum floor displacements and accelerations of RCB. Then, probabilistic seismic demand models of RCB are developed for each IM. Statistical parameters including coefficient of determination (R2), dispersion (i.e. standard deviation), practicality, and proficiency are calculated to recognize strongly correlated IMs with the seismic performance of the NPP structure. The numerical results show that the optimal IMs are spectral acceleration, spectral velocity, spectral displacement at the fundamental period, acceleration spectrum intensity, effective peak acceleration, peak ground acceleration, A95, and sustained maximum acceleration. Moreover, weakly related IMs to the seismic performance of RCB are peak ground displacement, root-mean-square of displacement, specific energy density, root-mean-square of velocity, peak ground velocity, Housner intensity, velocity spectrum intensity, and sustained maximum velocity. Finally, a set of fragility curves of RCB are developed for optimal IMs.

  • The rosen types of piezo-transformers were prepared and electrical properties were investigated in order to establish the optimum parameters in the process of polarization for ferroelectric materials. Polarization was readily originated with increasing the external energy such as an applied voltage, time, and temperature so that the planar coupling factor and voltage gain were saturated under the conditions of over 14$0^{\circ}C$, applied voltage and time of 4 kV/mm and 3 minutes respectively. The empirical equation for domain rotation probability, which was in proportion to square of an applied voltage and temperature and square root of time, as functions of the above parameters was defined.

  • This paper investigates the evolution of EM admittance of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a notched beam from wave propagation perspective. A finite element analysis is adopted to obtain numerical solutions for Lamb waves reverberating on the notched beam. The mode-converted Lamb wave signals due to a notch are extracted by using the polarization characteristics of piezoelectric transducers collocated on the beam. Then, a series of temporal spectrums are computed to demonstrate the evolution of EM admittance through fast Fourier transform of the mode-converted Lamb wave signals which are consecutively truncated in the time domain. When truncation time is relatively small, the corresponding temporal spectrum is governed by the characteristics of the input driving frequency. As truncation time becomes large, however, the modal characteristics of the notched beam play a crucial role in the temporal spectrum within the input driving frequency band. This implies that mode-converted Lamb waves reverberating on the beam contributes to the resonance of the beam. The root mean square values are computed for the temporal spectrums in the vicinity of each resonance frequency. The root mean square values increase monotonically with respect to truncation time for any resonance frequencies. Finally the implications of the numerical observation are discussed in the context of damage detection of a beam.

  • Representing protein three-dimensional structure by concatenating a sequence of protein fragments gives an efficient application in analysis, modeling, search, and prediction of protein structures. This paper investigated the effective combination of distance measures, which can exploit large protein structure database, in order to construct a protein fragment library representing native protein structures accurately. Clustering method was used to construct a protein fragment library. Initial clustering stage used inter alpha-carbon distance having low time complexity, and cluster extension stage used the combination of inter alpha-carbon distance, Binet-Cauchy distance, and root mean square deviation. Protein fragment library was constructed by leveraging large protein structure database using the proposed combination of distance measures. This library gives low root mean square deviation in the experiments representing protein structures with protein fragments.

  • In this paper, a high-performance floating point unit, which is suitable for high-performance superscalar microprocessors and supports IEEE 754 standard, is designed. Floating-point arithmetic unit (AU) supports all denormalized number processing through hardware, while eliminating the additional delay time due to the denormalized number processing by proposing the proposed gradual underflow prediction (GUP) scheme. Contrary to the existing fixed-radix implementations, floating-point divide/square root unit adopts a new architecture which determines variable length quotient bits per cycle. The new architecture is superior to the SRT implementations in terms of performance and design complexity. Moreover, sophisticated exception prediction scheme enables precise exception to be implemented with ease on various superscalar microprocessors, and removes the stall cycles in division. Designed floating-point AU and divide/square root unit are integrated with and instruction decoder, register file, memory model and multiplier to form a floating-point unit, and its function and performance is verified.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the square root computation having high computation complexity in Canny edge detection algorithm using image processing. The proposed method is to reduce the number of operation calculating gradient magnitude using pixel's continuity using make a specific pattern instead of square root computation in gradient magnitude calculating operation. Using various test images and changing number of hole pixels, we can check for calculate match rate about 97% for one hole, and 94%, 90%, 88% when the number of hole is increased and measure decreasing computation time about 0.2ms for one hole, and 0.398ms, 0.6ms, 0.8ms when the number of hole is increased. Through this method, we expect to implement low power embedded vision system through high accuracy and a reduced operation number using two-hole pixels.

  • The thermal response of sprinkler is characterized by the response time index(RTI). The RTI represents the product of the thermal time constant for the heat responsive element of a sprinkler and the square root of the hot air velocity at plunge test. A plunge test is adapted for measuring RTI, wherein a sprinkler is suddenly immersed in the steady flow in the test section of a hot air tunnel. The method of measurements of the response parameters is presented.
