This paper investigates the corrosion property of sprinkler pipe and provides the prevention solution. This study examines the property of stainless pipe widely used as sprinkler pipe and performs theoretical studies on the corrosion procedure. It was found that corrosion of the pipes mainly results from deterioration of pipe and wrong installation. The test result is expected to be useful in designing of the pipe system and minimizing of the corrosion.
Copper metal is widely used in tubes installed in sprinkler water services because of its excellent corrosion resistance. Copper corrosion is considered to be insignificant in water system and the incident of copper pipeline failure is relatively low. However, pitting corrosion is a major problem with all copper tubes. In this study, leaked sprinkler copper tubes were collected from three different locations and examined on the causes of pitting corrosion of copper tubes in sprinkler water plumbing systems. Electrochemical tests such as potentiodynamic polarization, as well as surface and chemical analyses were performed. Results show that pitting corrosion of copper tubes were found as Type I pitting that the carbon film formed on the copper tubes have a harmful effects, causing the pinhole failure in the pipe and resulting in leakage of water. The contermeasures on Type I pitting corrosion of copper tubes were proposed.
The present study investigates the effects of sprinkler spray on fire driven flow characteristics in a compartment based on numerical approach. The FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator), a widely used fire field model, was used to simulate the fire induced flow and sprinkler spray and a series of grid independence tests have been performed to obtain the optimal grid size. In order to validate the result predicted by FDS model, the calculated results were compared with experimental results of Magnone et al.. The FDS model matches quite well to experiments in temperature profile and mass flux through doorway, however, the discrepancy between the FDS model and experiments increases with increasing water discharge rate. As with previous study, the FDS calculation also shows a decrease of mass flow rate of combustion products through doorway due to the sprinkler spray. This study can contribute to optimize the sprinkler system design and verify the validity of the fire field model with sprinkler spray.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to test the sprinkler performance to protect the wall and ceiling joints of the sandwich panel warehouse in case of fire. Method: Based on the field surveys, test was setup and combustibles were prepared. The sprinkler discharge tests were performed at the corner of the wall and right under the sprinkler head. Results: It has been found that operation of the K-80 closed sprinkler head prevents the ignition of the sandwich panel and therefore no damage to the joints of sandwich panels. To prevent skipping phenomenon, it is necessary to install the sprinkler head from the corner of the wall and to keep a minimum distance of 2.4m and a maximum distance of 3m. Conclution: A Standard Operation Procedure should be prepared to suppress and rescue of fire brigade for a sandwich panel warehouse protected by perimeter sprinklers preventing a ignition of core materials and control fire.
Fire protection (sprinkler) piping system is an essential element for the energy supply and for the protection against the seismic-induced fire during and after an earthquake. The primary objective of this study was to understand the seismic performance of complex two-story piping system installed in a low-rise building subjected to bi-directional and three-directional earthquakes. The result of current study revealed that the displacement of the piping system in accordance with floor level was significantly different due to acceleration-sensitivity but the effect of the piping system due to the vertical direction earthquake was not significant.
The sprinkler system is regarded as the most effective fire extinguishing system. In this study, we proposed a sprinkler layout optimization framework based on fire simulation and mathematical programming. As a case study, the target space in the form of ordinary residence was set up with the size of $5.2m(L){\times}5.4m(W){\times}2.4m(H)$, and we constructed the fire scenario that polyurethane couch was ignited through carelessness. And we simulated and analyzed fire speed, temperature change and heat release rate according to the type and number of sprinklers installed. Through the formulation of installation and damage costs depending on sprinklers, the sprinkler layout showing optimal performance was resulted from mathematical programming.
Although the subject of sprinkler installations in Korean regulations is less strict than in other advanced countries, many building owners and managers tend to install sprinklers only in the types of buildings designated by law or create building designs for which sprinkler installation standards are not applied. This is because priority is given to cutting installation expenses rather than providing building fire safety. In this study, the benefit is estimated for various expenses from installation and maintenance of sprinklers as an investment. As a result of comparing sprinkler system installation expense and the financial benefit by efficiency analysis, the payback period is 1/20 of the building life expectancy and its efficiency is twice the expense. Therefore, installation of sprinklers by regulation has financial efficiency and it is desirable to broadly encourage the installation of sprinklers.
This study was performed to Investigate size of droplet sprinkled from mini-sprinkler. Twelve different kinds of the sprinkler having various structures and sizes of nozzle orifices were selected and tested. Diameters of the droplet reached at several distances from a sprinkler were measured by a machine vision system and the volume median diameters (VMM) were determined statistically. The size of droplet was not affected much by the size of nozzle orifice of a sprinkler but was rather more affected by structure of the sprinkler, especially by the shape of spreader of the sprinkler. Experiment of varying pressure of sprinkling water validated that the size of droplet was inversely proportional to water pressure powered by 1/3. Hence the size of droplet at any water pressure could be easily estimated from experimental data. The size of droplet increased as travel distance of the droplet increases in a relationship of and order function. The size of droplet of the tested sprinkler were in the ranges of 100-300fm within 1m of droplet travel distance, 230~470${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ within 1~2m of droplet travel distance and 300~770${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ within 2~3m of droplet travel distance.
In order to prevent chestnuts from damage by the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrosis punctiferalis, a sprinkler system was installed on the chestnut orchard. Such a test was conducted at Yeoju-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea in 2002. Insecticides of fenitrothion 50% EC, x1,000 and diflubenzuron 25% Wp, x2,500 were sprayed at ten-day fifteen-day and twenty-day intervals during the period of D. punctiferalis adult occurrence by sprinkler system. The peach pyralid moths generally emerged for about 60 days from early July to early September, and peak emergence was 10 days from late July to early August. Damage rate of chestnuts were 0.9-4.0% on average with this crown insecticide spraying with diflubenzuron, while 30.4% when not treated. Control effectiveness of this insecticide spraying was 92%(86.7-97.0%). In conclusion, effectual times and number of insecticide application with sprinkle system against peach pyralid moth were from early July to late August and four or five times at ten or fifteen day intervals, respectively.
Even though the sprinkler system is a essential fire suppression system, the design engineers do not fully understand the concept of design area which sprinklers operate. They frequently made a mistake to form design area and calculate it. The shape of design area is a square or a rectangle which branch side line is a little longer than the cross main side. NFPA demands to lengthen the branch side to 1.2 times than the cross main side and FM demands 1.4 times. The longer the branch side at the same design area is, the bigger the water quantity and pressure is. At the results of hydraulic calculation of design areas, when the branch side is longer 1.2 times, the water quantity became 4.6% bigger than exact square and the pressure came to 4.67% bigger. When it is longer 1.4 times, the water quantity and the pressure are bigger 7.52%, 14.51%. Therefore, the sprinkler design engineers should follow the general rule of design area, exact square or rectangle which length along the branch line is a little longer than length along the cross main, to design more stable system.
